Man, it's surreal. The people are on the radio talking about how much of an opportunity this is for Al-Queda to make their 'stand' right here and now.

Bush briefed on Levee breaches before Katrina Hit
kapkomet replied to Balta1701's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 06:01 PM) See, I disagree with the last part of that, because this was simply not a local problem after the storm hit. Before the storm...planning for a storm, setting up emergency systems that could survive the storm, coming up with and activating evacuation plans, those are local responsibilites. But when a major, interstate disaster strikes, you simply have to assume that some state level agencies will be overwhelmed, simply due to the fact that they're just too local. If communications for 1 police department go down, it could screw up a response for dozens of different precincts if there is no one up at the top giving orders and controlling the situation. It's already been addressed, but I'm NOT saying there's no blame for the federal gov't, but IMO if the locals would have been better, the impact would have been lessened. -
That sounds reasonable to me... and pretty well balanced. This will be fun.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 05:40 PM) Port Authorities are regulated by the state. Although they may have a somewhat private existence, they can't make a lot of decisions without governmental approval and oversight. Like for example - the PANYNJ here. I dealt quite a bit with the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey when I was at the airline. Always on the phone with those people because they could never get their #$^#^& paperwork right. You talk about buerocracy (sp). Ouch.

Bush briefed on Levee breaches before Katrina Hit

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 05:43 PM) Here's something scary...I'm about to agree also. Heard more of that phone call 2k5 alluded to on the news this mornin' while waiting for the rains to die down so I could bike in. At least based on the report from Fox 11 L.A., the call 2k5 was quoting was one that happened in the afternoon, at roughly noon. Link. That one doesn't nearly bother me as much as the one that evening, the "Give us everything you've got" call. Why? Because the Levee breaches had only occurred a couple of hours before she placed that call, which may not have even been time for it to be noticed by major authorities unless they were standing right there. But if Blanco couldn't confirm by the call to Bush at 9:00 that night that the levees had breached (that call we haven't heard in this AP release I believe), then something was seriously wrong with the way Blanco was getting information. That's half a day after the breaches...she certainly should have made certain beforehand that there was some means of investigating those levees right after the storm passed, or at least forced someone into the city to give her a real report. These are the sorts of things that cost lives...and the sort of things that decent folk resign when they realize they did. What is our government really for if they can't get their stories straight in a time like this? I mean I know disasters means that you can't have it all right, but the thing that's sickening about this whole thing is they are all lying their asses off about what happened to save their own tails. They all are to blame to certain extents. However, IMO, the federal response is the last in the pecking order because the people that are there all the time should know how to deal with their own areas the best, period. -
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 04:42 PM) Exactly. BTW, we should kick them all out of their ports. I'm not protectionist by any means - but I don't feel comfortable with private industry controlling our country's exit and entry points. And I'm really uncomfortable with other governments controlling private industry. Well, except it's not 'private industry' in the traditional sense, or at least that's what they want you to think. What are "Port Authorities..."? (more of a rhetorical question, but I want to see where this goes).

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 02:57 PM) I think it's entirely appropriate to blame Bush for seeming out of touch during the crisis and for lying through his teeth about it afterwords. I think it's entirely appropriate to blame Nagin and Blanco for not doing what was necessary to protect the people in the city of New Orleans and state of Louisiana. And I think its entirely appropriate to use it as justification to fire the three of them. And I agree as well. -
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 06:30 AM) The prior note was kind of stuck in a glitch thread so I just want people to know that the reason you couldn't access Soxtalk for a large portion of the day on Thursday was due to an error in the program the runs all the PHP. Because of that the front page and forum (which are both PHP based) were basically acting as if they couldn't recognize the code. We had not seen the issue before, but we have been doing some other server stuff on the back end and by mid day we had isolated and solved the problem. Everything should be set and I wouldn't expect any sort of significant outage (not that we ever do) but every once in a while an error will happen and being that we are amateurs sometimes it takes us a bit. I appreciate everyone's patience and apologize for the downtime. We are always trying to do things to ensure that the downtime will decrease and I'd like to think that ever year we've improved on that and we'll be doing what we can to prepare the site for the new season and more site growth so that there won't be many slowdowns. We are also working on some alternatives to getting the search function working again (but in a different way). Just wanted to keep everyone in the loop and thanks so much for making Soxtalk what it is today. The site is only as good as the community and I personally think you, the members, are amazing. This was Gage's fault, again. I was doing futuresox stuff and when I went to move some things, the script that I ran to clean things up got a little too happy cleaning things and wouldn't let these pages run. So, since it's futuresox that caused all the problems, IT's GAGE'S FAULT! Also wanted to be very clear - some of you thought that this issue was related to a virus that was attached to the site for a short time. The problems yesterday were NOT related in any way. It was local to this server and had nothing to do with anything else. If you all "downloaded" (which it wasn't going to let you anyway, but you all didn't know that) nothing was going to happen. Thanks, everyone, for your patience and understanding! Kap

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 04:46 AM) That pretty much sums up the difference in browers. Firefox is the better browser, I'm sure you IE people are hard headed, hell I was too before switching. Firefox and tabs and it's mundo pop-up blocker will have you hooked in 3 days--give it 3 days I swear you'll love it. Admins: Any chance of getting the page views broken down by broswer? I hope Firefox and Opera are up into the 30% range as a whole. IE is such a POS, IMO at least--and I used IE forever. Normally, yes, but for some reason I can't get the damn thing to work... crazy stuff going on here today.

Not really. Just let her keep stepping in her own s***. I don't need to see idiots making her an idiot.

It doesn't matter what Clinton did. He did nothing wrong, or at least, it's not relevant anymore.

Oh so the governor can be wrong, but the president is just a liar. Interesting. Look, the whole thing is bulls***, no matter how you cut it or who you blame. -
damn people... sorry... today was rough on soxtalk withdrawls, eh?

Milkman, and any others for that matter, please PM me your specific problems as you run across them. We're getting ready to do a MAJOR revamp and need feedback so that it goes smoothly.

What a pisser to start the day off by. Man.

After much hair-pulling and a few colorful metaphors, the site's obviously back up. My fault... sort of. There was a script that I ran this morning that deleted the function of the message boards. Once I figured that out it took all of 5 minutes to fix.

A new spin on the "myth" of Abramoffs Democrats
kapkomet replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Filibuster
How many greasy wheels are there in local government? I see it all the time. A sherriff paid off here, a local nutjob there, the racist (see, white) Dallas City Council, etc. The fact of the matter is to get elected you almost have to do it in a dishonest means anymore. That's the truth. -

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 2, 2006 -> 04:49 AM) Yes. Honesty. That is the thing that is beyond him. Yes and no. (And that's the truth) I think half the time he gets fed a line of bull s*** and then doesn't know any better. I think the other half the time, there's a reason why he's lying and it's important that he does so. Like the ports deal. Of course that doesn't matter anymore, because that's getting totally blown out of the water no matter what now anyway. -
I missed the guys tonight, but I DVR'd it. I'll watch tomorrow before the annoucement. Paris is pretty dang good.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 2, 2006 -> 12:22 AM) I will never believe that one party does anything more or less than the other. The business of politics is the same for both parties. Even if Jack didn't touch a Dem, there is someone out there that did. Neither party has a monopoly on honesty or dishonesty. All we can do is reject those politicians as we find them and pray that the good and just people in both parties stay and have long successful careers. It is such a minority of leaders that are ever accused or convicted of any wrongdoing. By and large we have honest representation on both sides of the aisle. Our entire government is so corrupt. And when in Rome... (crumbles)
