Sox trade Cristian Mena to Arizona for OF Dominic Fletcher
In the highlight reel, Fletcher drives the ball pretty well; doesn't look like Jerry Owens. I like who we got for Mena better than who/what we got for Santos. Prefer trading away Santos than trading away Mena. So, if I had my druthers, it would have been Santos (perhaps via Seattle) for Fletcher.

Gregory Santos Traded to Mariners for P Prelander Berroa, OF Zach DeLoach and 69th pick
Maybe so, but then again, how have the Sox used their last 2 2nd round draft picks: injured college pitchers. im all for trading him; just not enamored with this trade.

Gregory Santos Traded to Mariners for P Prelander Berroa, OF Zach DeLoach and 69th pick
Santos is only 23, has a ton of control, and had a really good year last year: low walk and low home run rates. He had value. I understand the need to trade a reliever, but not sure that the Sox extracted top value. The best prospect is a reliever, and only 9 months younger than Santos. And the draft pick - what is that worth? The Sox 2nd and 3rd picks from the last draft are like the 20th ranked prospects in this below average system. But there's nothing really to fear with this trade because the ceiling of what we gave up is basically certain.

Sox trade Cristian Mena to Arizona for OF Dominic Fletcher
Sox have a lot of pitching prospects, such as they are, and would have preferred not to trade the 20 year old guy. But the Sox needed some young OF; really don't have any until today (Colas obviously in the doghouse). And the Sox should know what they're getting here.

Cease To Padres per Passan
Good point. I forgot about the option. But looking at the option (pay him $12m to pitch or $4m not to pitch), the Sox could have him this season for an incremental cost of $8 m. That's pretty reasonable (the Sox have spent more than that for much worse on paper) and the Sox still wouldn't go for it. I guess we can't expect other teams to.

Cease To Padres per Passan
That and that the Sox were unable to move him at the deadline last July.

PUIG
Did he do anything that was actually bad/illegal/immoral or was he just a giant pain the ass? If just the latter, sign him.

Cease To Padres per Passan
While it may be a fair return, my point was simply that it doesn't reach the "sky high" or "outrageous" level that the media reports have characterized Getz' demands. And my preference would be to not accept that Mariners return.

Cease To Padres per Passan
If we're willing to take a mid-rotation guy as centerpiece, our asking price isn't as outrageous as advertised.

Cease To Padres per Passan
Do Woo or Miller have TOR talent? If not, I don't see the point of such a trade. I'm guessing they don't, as 6th and 4th round picks (although that's not dispositive).

Cease To Padres per Passan
I'd be careful of Mariners' pitchers as that is a pitchers' park. And then there is the annoyance of trading for a 6th round pick from just 3 years ago; 6th round, one of several that the Sox punted that year.

Outside the Box: Trade Cease+ for Daulton Varsho+
Not a Varsho fan, but I like the thinking of not going "all prospect." Boston: Roman Anthony, Grissom, Tanner Houck.

Cease To Padres per Passan
Baltimore won 100 games last season, but if you look at their individual stats, it doesn't look like a 100 win team. They could easily fall back to 85-90. And they were flattened in the playoffs. They have a lot of young players, but still need to sort through them. And Cease did have a less than stellar 2023. We're just more likely to get young talent from mature organizations like the Braves or Dodgers or the like. But they've probably made their moves. So, to state the obvious, it looks like June or July. Not ideal, but worth the risk (versus "settling") considering the lack of talent in this org.

Sox PR "ooops" moment?
It's the people who listened to Haber and made a pick based on his advice that should be embarrassed.

It seems better than it has been, although still probably bottom quintile.

Cease To Padres per Passan
I hope our scouts are savvy enough to be ahead of the curve on this and aren't wed to top 50/100 lists. Prospects rise and fall; heck the Dodgers just swapped a top 50 guy for an unranked prospect, in a deal that is considered fair. It gives a lot more leeway on making a deal; and we don't want yesterday's top 100.

Sign Timmy and put him in RF.

Cease To Padres per Passan
Now that Busch is Ferris, perhaps the Dodgers can offer a different Busch and Ferris. I also wouldn't mind an old-fashioned baseball trade; Boston comes to mind. Not overly confident that the Sox can ever build this thing from the ground up (lack of infrastructure, international investment, etc.)

Cease To Padres per Passan
Don't need/want the spare parts. Go stand in the corner with Cardinals' fans for that one.

2024 - MLB Draft Thread
Praise be. No more punting! I assume that this means no more ceiling relivers in the early rounds as well! (which I assume came complements of moneyball Haber)

Sale traded to Braves for Grissom
Trading top prospects at all in this day and age, much less trading them for a pitcher coming off of a bad year.
-
Sale traded to Braves for Grissom
Yea, this isn't good. The Braves may not have the most desirable prospects. But their FO has the sophistication to understand Cease's value, and the guts to make a move. And currently, the Sox are dealing with orgs that I fear lack both, esp. the guts.
