QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 12:14 AM) Is it me or does the crowd look sparse? Odd for a half-price night for a 1st place team. a.) Bears game. Sad, I know, that more people would rather go to a preseason football game, but this town loves it's football. b.) I doubt everyone has their minds on sports right now...
-
Can someone fill me in as far as talking about these 'snipers'? I haven't been paying enough attention to this, shame on me, but can someone tell me a little bit about what's going on...?
-
You can't just look at AVG and OBP alone. Slugging HAS to be in there, too...

QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 05:49 AM) How many World Series have Billy Beane built team played in? What are his teams' record in the postseason? Therefore, does Oakland fit the definition of "World Series Caliber" team? A GM has to build his team for the 162 game season. You can't build a team for the playoffs, because there is never a guarantee you'll make it that far. The postseason is all about who happens to be playing right at the right time. Oakland hasn't played well at the right times. But, I certainly don't think you should just discredit his accomplishments as you are... BTW -- In your opinion, were the 2002 Oakland A's a "World Series Caliber Team"? Why or why not, and don't just say, "Well, they didn't make the World Series, so they aren't World Series Caliber".

The Angels announcers are awful. Almost as bad as an outsider would think of Hawk & DJ. Hudler has a nickname for EVERYONE. He has Vladdy, 'Ersty', and I even heard 'Figgy'. It's awful. And I don't really like Michael Kay, either. Talk about being on Jeter's knob... Zito was f***ing awesome. He spotted that overhand curveball wherever he wanted to put it. And, this year, as opposed to last year, he's also got a nice slider working, too. That was one of the best pitched games I've seen of the year. Colon was awesome, too. It's gonna be an awesome race down the stretch, too. They face off six more times. It looks like LAoA has the easier schedule, but a win either later tonight or tomorrow would be huge for Oakland.
-
Even if he could only come off the bench as a PH, that's fine. He'd become our best pinch-hitter easily. I'd love to have #35 come off the bench late in a game... Keep workin' hard, big man...
-
1-1 in the top of the tenth. Zito and Colon both pitched nine innings, Colon working into the tenth. Dan Johnson with an awesome AB, like twelve pitches, then sprays a double to left field. K-Rod coming in, runner on third, one out. BTW -- I think I'm going to make two seperate "Down the Stretch" threads, in which you guys can post about the races not involving the Sox, i.e. not the AL Central. Would you guys like that/use it? Or would you rather have seperate threads that you guys make on your own?

QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 03:00 AM) He does pitch without balls! How is that wrong? Garland is not a gutsy pitcher! Are you happy, is that politically correct and sensitive enough for you? This is pathetic. Dont be so damn sensitive. He pitches without balls? 'Cause he had a bad start against Texas, he isn't gutsy? He has a 2.94 ERA vs Cleveland this year. 2.25 vs. Baltimore. 3.86 vs. Anahiem. .53 vs. Detroit. 1.98 vs. Minny. 1.29 vs. SD. This year, he has bad ERA's against Boston, Texas, Toronto, and Arizona. Does that make him not gutsy?

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 03:00 AM) when he's right, he's right. welcome tot he board! What exactly is he 'right' about?
-
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 02:58 AM) come on now, we can't be policing that strictly. that's just ridiculous downright ridiculous. you should be upset with yourself for taking him so literally. What? For thinking that someone can get their point across without calling them 'cowardly'?
-
QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 02:57 AM) One great outting and suddenly Jose is gone and BMac is guaranteed a spot in next years rotation? First, Orlando should be gone instead of Jose, and second, why dont we watch to see if BMac can keep this up? You guys sound like Cubs fans. Great way to start off at the board. Call us Cub fans...
-
QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 02:55 AM) If I called him a coward for the sake of it, that would be small minded. But Im calling him one based on his approach to hitters. Are you going to tell me that JG is a gutsy pitcher? Hes not. I cant believe I even have to defend myself on this one. You said he pitches 'without balls'. You can get your point across without saying that... But hey, maybe you should get to defending Sean Casey... :rolly

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 02:50 AM) Great job McCarthy. Now, who's going to start the thread asking how many Cy Youngs can he win in your best B. Musberger voice? No, but he needs to be in the rotation next year. You can't have every single guy in your rotation making $5 million plus. If you can get McCarthy to be a good #4 starter next year (with potential to be a lot better), then that's huge. Hell, I'm sure Oakland is extremely happy that they're winning with all the young guys -- that group is going to be together for at least three years...
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 02:44 AM) So we're right back where we were at this time last night. I don't know how to judge today. I'm happy we won. But we lost one in the L column. But we also lost one in the magic number column. I've questioned how to look at it (so long, of course, as we pull out tonight's game).

QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 02:40 AM) One moment of bravery and courage? Is that all you can muster? Watch Pedro pitch. He attacks everyone. He would go right after Pujols, Vlad or any of these other superstars. Garland would be a coward going up against them. The greats never back down. Garland does. When we're paying Garland $10 million bucks and he's not producing like Pedro, then you can b****. Until then, how about you stop posting and learn a little? You've already called Paul Konerko overrated, and called for -- wait, let me try and say this without laughing -- Sean Casey to replace him. I also suggest you read the thread about personal attacks on players. Calling someone a 'coward' and a guy 'without balls' is borderline attacking...
-
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 02:12 AM) He sucks for the most part. Just having a good month. Yeah -- he's got a .745 OPS, which is terrible for the positions he plays (RF/3B).
-
QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 01:50 AM) No, hes not. Hes 28th in the bigs in RBIs. In the only category he actually does well in, homeruns, hes 11th in the bigs. As for the current game, Soriano doubles and the no hitter is gone. Oh well, it was a nice effort. Yeah, we need more BA and Sean Casey!
-
QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 01:38 AM) A ten pitch strikeout for PK, possibly the most overrated player on earth. Whatever he asks for in the offseason, he should not get it. He is the old team, we need someone like Sean Casey to represent the new Sox. Worst.Post.Evar.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 01:03 AM) I want both Oakland and Anaheim in the playoffs. If we make the playoffs, I'm praying for a first round matchup with Anahiem. Out of Oakland/Boston/New York/Cleveland, I think we match up best with Anahiem. I don't think their offense is that strong, and I think we have better pitching. JMO, though...
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 01:01 AM) Suspend Keith...CLAP CLAP CLAP LOL. Seriously, though, I want Oakland to win just so I can hear what Phlaschke and Brantley have to say when they were wrong.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 12:57 AM) I'm excited. They are winning this game Plus in a few minutes heading out to see Zito vs Colon Let's go Oak-land !

Ahhhh, Jason, bring civility and calmness to a gamethread near you.

QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 12:01 AM) Arizona is a deceptive case because so many of their salaries were deferred because of extenuating circumstances. I thought Schil and Randy agreed to defer because of the situation Ok, so it's all about money. Why aren't the Mets in first? Why are Seattle and Texas behind Oakland? Hell, why is Anahiem behind Oakland? Why is Cleveland step-for-step playing with the Yankees? Why is Baltimore doing worse than Toronto? Money shouldn't be an excuse, ESPECIALLY for the White Sox. They're the highest payroll in the division. Quit trying to cry poor, there's plenty of money...

I believe Podsednik's OBP after today's game is right around .342, give or take a couple of points. Just, FWIW...
