Beat the Tribe: August 28, 2004 Game Thread
CWSGuy406 replied to BridgeportHeather's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Let's win the next two and hope Anahiem can beat up on those Twinkies - moving us to six games out. Gotta start somewhere - it'll take a miracle, but I've seen miracles before. Go Sox! -
Since we've seemed to have lost the other Madden thread (no biggy), I wanted to start a new one (unless I just haven't gone back far enough - if that's the case, you can delete this thread). Can someone create a realistic Deion Sanders and post his attributes? If someone has found a website that already has posted numbers about him, that'd be great too. Or - better yet, didn't last years' Madden game have Deion in it? Can someone posts his attributes from last years' Madden game? IIRC, he's a free agent in it... EDIT: Ack - I'm a friggin' dumbass. Can someone move this to SL&P? Thanks a bunch.

Why doesn't Willie start every game at 2b or CF?

Sounds a LOT like the Aaron Rowand situation last year. None of us knew what he had until he was given a full shot to play this year; look how he's doing. Harris WAS given a full shot to play, in April/May. He played well; but Uribe's hot streak lasted a bit longer than Harris', so Harris was the one ousted to the bench. Harris ought to be playing every day, here on out... -

Just got back from the third preseason game, let me give you a little recap on what I saw (Game three, Bears vs Saints): -Rex Grossman had some good throws, had some bad throws. He seems to start off slow, and then get into a nice groove. The thing I'm liking most about Grossman is that, a.) he hasn't thrown any INTs yet and, b.) he's very elusive in the pocket. Not fast, but elusive. -Thomas Jones continues to impress. Give this line a couple weeks to gel, and I honestly think that TJ will rush for 1,500 yards or so. -Offensive line was good at times, bad at others. I really wasn't paying attention to them much, so I won't try and BS you and make something up. But - Tait is very good as well. Other than that, I dunno. -Dustin Lyman is going to be a weapon in this offense. I wouldn't be surprised to see he or Desmond Clark, if healthy, the leading receivers (receptions) by the end of the year. -Terrell was OK. They didn't throw to him much, and the one pass interference call was way, way too obvious. Gage - didn't really pay attention. Wade seems to be a solid receiver - dropped one or two, but I think he'll be alright (just no punt returns/kick returns.). Berrian is fast, as shown on the nice punt return he had, as well as a play-action pass that was called back because of a penalty. #18 Daryl Jones had a very good game; a 76 yard kick return, he seems like a quick receiver. Merrit played well. -OK - Defense. Todd Johnson, safety who broke his jaw last year, is playing well. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the opening day safety opposite Mike Brown. Brown played well; always does. -Our secondary was mediocre. Tillman played a nice game, but I'm real iffy on McQuarters. I see a ton of potential in Nathan Vasher; I really think in a year or two, he'll be our number 2 corner. McMillon - meh. -Tommie Harris played an excellent game. For the first time in the preseason, I saw the quickness everyone raved about. He was manhandling the first-string Guard, he was in the backfield a ton of times in the first sack. I haven't looked at the box score, so I don't know for how many tackles he registered, but he played awesome. Tank was solid too. B-Rob was OK, didn't really pay attention to him. Alex Brown played well, and Haynes played pretty well too (except for the play where he had the QB in his hands, and let him slip away.). -Briggs is awesome. I love watching him play. I think we're set at linebacker for the next couple of years, at least, with Briggs-Urlacher-Odom. Odom is a smart football player, he reads the QB very well, just can't catch the ball when he has a chance, lol. We know what we're going to get with Urlacher, so that isn't a problem. That's the report for now. For any others who watched the game/were there, let me know what you thought. -
I know I'm a day late, but nice start by Gio. Is it likely that he'll start the year in Winston-Salem, or will he start off next year at Kanny, and see how it goes from there? I'm hoping he's able to take the B-Mac route, start off in W-S (I know Mac didn't start off at W-S this year, but...), and then towards the middle-end of the year, move him up to Birmingham. Am I crazy in thinking this is even slightly possible?

If we trade Jon Garland, than again in 2005, we're going to go through the same s*** we've gone through the past four years, the meri-go-round of 5th starters. We have a guy in Garland who, we KNOW will give us good innings, we KNOW will provide a sub-5 ERA. Plus - the potential, IMHO, for this kid, could spring him up to about a 4.00 ERA. With this offense, if the fifth starter has a four ERA - hell, even a 4.50 ERA - we're going to be in business. If some team wants to overpay and give us a very good position player as well as a solid relief pitcher, then I'll do it. But only if the other team is clearly overpaying.

I usually take the Metra Electric Line, and that stops off at Roosevelt Road, just minutes from Soldier Field. It's nice, too, because in Flossmore, there's no parking fee. I'll be there tonight, preseason game numero three.

I love the idea of aquiring Vizquel in the offseason. But that still doesn't help our biggest offensive weakness: hitting vs. lefties. Outside of Aaron Rowand, we get absolutely dominated by lefties. It's odd, considering all of the righties we have right in the heart of the order, but for some reason, our team sucks vs. the lefties. Vizquel is a career .274 hitter vs. lefties, but only a .309 OBP. We have enough lefties coming off the bench (though I'd like to see one in the heart of our order, a power hitter, OBP - JD Drew type, or Delgado pre-2004-type). We need a player who is able to absolutely smoke lefties. I'm absolutely sick of getting shutdown my southpaws...

: BIG BEN!
-
I just hope, that one day - one of our minor league pitchers could come up, and throw a gem when we really needed one - kind of what that Bautista, IIRC that's his name, kid from Baltimore did to us earlier in the year with that 1-0 shutout. Just once, man...
-
Gotta start somewhere, right? Nice pitching by Cotts - and Hot Carl has turned into Very Hot Carl. And how about Big Ben!!!! Twins losing to the Rangers - like I said, gotta start somewhere. Chip away and let's get on a run, how about it, Sox?
-
I just wanted to get this down on record. I didn't feel all that good when Minny swept up at home coming into the series, but for the first time in a while (and not just because of this game), I have a good feeling about this team. Don't worry, I'm not going overboard and saying we're going to win 30 out of 37 and make the playoffs, but I think we're going to sweep Cleveland. Again - JMHO, that's how I feel. I just wanted to get this down so I can brag if I'm right, or run and hide if I'm wrong.
-
Frankly, throwing 16-20 million at Beltran would be damn stupid, IMO. 16-20 million can be used to fill at least four holes on this team.
-
Greene was drafted 13th overall in 2002, right before the Mets took Kazmir (and stupidly traded him for weak ass Zambrano!!!) and we took Royce Ring. Ugh - don't remind me about that draft. Joe - f***ing - Blanton, Kenny! (One of the few beefs I've had with Kenneth.)
-
IIRC, the World Cup starts on Monday (correct me if I'm wrong), and that might be the last hockey we see for a while. So, for the few on this board that appreciate the love of hockey, I thought this would be a nice thread. Like I said to I-Krush - once the World Cup starts, I'm a Finnish kid. I really think that Ruutu is going to shine. And - when the NHL finally starts again, I cannot wait to watch him. His knee should be 100%, and finally we'll be able to see the real Ruutu, that of hitting, scoring, passing, and skating. Here's an an article on chicagoblackhawks.com, I think a lot of you 'Hawk fans will enjoy it. Ruutu Article Go Finland! Go Hawks!

No doubt - without a question, Rowand is the Sox' MVP this year. He has a nice, short quick swing, he's aggressive at the plate, yet he'll take his walks too.
-
I have the feeling that this bottom half inning might just be as long as the top half. Let's hope I'm wrong.
-
While acquiring Johnson would be nice, we NEED a more consistent offense. I'm sick of this, eight runs the one night, shutout the next night. I'd love if this team could consistently put up four, five runs per game. I also want to see a solid bullpen arm added here. Actually, two. Why do the Twins win? Solid bullpen and a consistent offense (Radke and Santana help a bit, too.). Like Jeremy mentioned in another thread, a platoon of Harris/Hairston at second would be excellent. Get a new thirdbaseman, as well as a lefty to stick out in right field (Catalanatto, Drew) - and then I think we can live with Uribe at short. I'll take a .240-.260 average from Juan as long as he can provide his usual GG-caliber defense.

Guys - go here, and watch the Halo 2 ones. Linky Watch the E3 2K4 Demo, as well as the Halo 2 Demo Trailer. Those two actually show good chunks of people playing the game, the Demo Trailer is a MUST watch for all Halo die-hards. I've already got it pre-ordered - November 9th, that's when I think the stores will get it. It's gonna f***in' rock!
-
Jeremy - welcome to Soxtalk. I like reading your posts at WSI, even though a lot of the time I disagree with you. Welcome!

Bump. I'm sorry, but this thread NEEDS to be on the first page.

Yeah, Mike North - b**** - is acting like a know-it-all and blaming this on Lovie too, but North has hated the hiring of Smith since day one. No doubt - North is such a racist.
