QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 29, 2007 -> 05:08 AM) I'll take him.....and I believe you were being sarcastic about C. Young? Oh heck yeah. I don't dislike Vazquez. In fact, I think I like him more than any of our 'veteran' starters other than Garland (maybe Contreras -- probably a toss-up). I like that Kenny locked him up, too -- at worst he'll give you 200 innings of a 4.90 ERA which is still valuable, and maybe one of these years he'll actually live up to the projection systems that continually peg him for an ERA around 4.00. But that trade... well, bad. Wasn't Arizona more or less backed into a corner, too? Maybe I'm being extremely naive, but I really think the Sox could've gotten the deal done without giving up Young.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 29, 2007 -> 05:01 AM) I still point back to the potential downfall of this era for the Sox as the second we traded Chris Young for Vazquez. But Chris Young hasn't proven s***! And he's a prospect, and prospects suck! On a separate but semi-related note, anybody see how Andruw Jones lately? He looks like he's dropped several pounds and looks to be in much better shape. Somebody wants to get paaaaaiiid...

Really freaking ridiculous that Perez doesn't make the roster. Then again, that's what happens when you choose to keep two (relatively useless) sub-750 OPS OFers, one of which is limited to a corner OF spot.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 10:33 PM) To my eyes, there's a huge difference in risk between splurging for $15 mil or so a season for 4 years on an Ichiro and splurging for 6-7 years at $20 mil a year on a Zambrano. But who knows, maybe all the spending last year will depress the market just a little bit this year when there's real talent out there. It's a tough decision, that's for sure. If I were to rank them, I'd put A-Rod first -- like you say, hitters are most always a better bet for health reasons -- followed by Zambrano, Jones, and last Ichiro. My feelings are that, if A-Rod opts out, the Sox ought to be first in line offering the biggest contract they've ever handed out. Reload the farm by trading Crede... I'd keep Uribe around because A-Rod's defense isn't going to get better and I can't see him moving back to SS after four years at 3B. And I'd move Fields to LF with Sweeney in right.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 09:36 PM) And it's the right decision not to. Well that, and next year's FA class has the potential to be LOADED with Andruw Jones and Ichiro already on the market and guys like A-Rod and Zambrano potentially going to be there. I'd throw gobs of money at the latter two. If there's an offseason to really splurge, it's next year -- fourth best player on the market (Ichiro) is arguably better than the best option on this past market (Soriano).

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 02:56 AM) At least with Anderson on the roster, we can have an elite defensive replacement. With as much as this situation has been messed up, at least he made it and not Terrero. At this point, I guess I get overly happy about anything I can make into a positive. The next thing we could hope for is a trade. I'd hate for the Sox to give up their best bench LH hitter in Mackowiak, but would a Mack-for-Damian Miller trade make sense? It'd be overpaying on the Sox' part, but it would allow Eduardo Perez to make the roster and would complete the bench as Anderson-Perez-Miller-Ozuna-Cintron. The only problem there is that you may have one too many righties... if only Erstad would take his rightful role as a bench guy, or if Pods would just fall off the earth...

Oh, and one more thing. WTF, White Sox scouts?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 02:51 AM) Looks like last year's story might be back again this year. Well, you see fathom, the World Series and all the extra innings are taking their to-- oh, wait.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Mar 25, 2007 -> 06:10 PM) http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...on.36727d0.html Wow, and I thought Sox fans overreacted to Spring Training numbers.... yikes. Back off the ledge, at least give it a year for McCarthy, Danks and Masset to have some major league time.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 07:19 PM) Wow, you're probably the first person I've found that doesn't appreciate Gus Johnson. Ehh, nobody at Deadspin seems to like him. My dad doesn't like him. He's just obnoxiously annoying. He screams at everything. JMO, though... -
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 08:46 PM) =Being turned down. Does it not? Yeah -- that probably makes sense. I read it as "U of I turned down Crean", but I read it wrong.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 06:28 PM) I hope the org. has learned their lesson w/ McCarthy. So the Sox shouldn't break guys into the majors through the bullpen because one guy failed? Even though it worked well for guys like Buehrle and Santana? I'm not saying that it's the right move for either Danks or Floyd, but you can't use one guy to make your case. Maybe the Sox should avoid EVER drafting a player from Stanford because Joe Borchard busted...

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 05:45 PM) Yeah, Illinois decided Matta and Gillespie weren't good enough and were turned down by Crean before hiring Weber. Oops. Crean was never really close to being U of I's coach. He never even interviewed for the job. http://marquettebasketball.blogspot.com/se...bel/tom%20crean

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) Gus Johnson is my favorite announcer in sports.....he is the young and exciting type of announcer that CBS should bring in. Dick Enberg just sucks. Exciting? I'd say obnoxious. He yells at everything. That's just annoying... -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 01:18 AM) I've got to say. I thought I knew what I was going to see in this game tonight, but i didnt think that the difference in coaching was going to be this large. SIU is just head and shoulders better coached than Kansas, its amazing. Does Kansas run any offense or do they just let the three guys on top weave and drive to the hoop? -

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 09:57 PM) he has done a good job, but I think he is good at Marquette, Kentucky may be too overwhelming. I tend to agree with that. He's applauded for 20 win seasons here, whereas at KU, a 20 win season wouldn't even be touching the iceberg. -

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 08:52 PM) Crean with Dwayne Wade...good Crean without Wade....MEH Look where Marquette was before Crean and after Crean. After McGuire, the program took a tumble, and Crean has bought them back to respectability (and then some). He's one of the bigger reasons we have a great practice facility in the Al McGuire Center, and he's part of the reason we're in the Big East rather than the C-USA. He's an awesome publicist. His recruiting seems okay, nothing special -- I don't know if he's pulled in a top recruit yet, but he seems to do a good enough job. I don't think he's the greatest fit for KU, either. Whichever the case, I really hope Crean stays, but... -
Rock -- my main point was that Thome Ks a lot, so having your #2 hitter bunt and give himself up when all it will take is a single to score the leadoff man isn't the best strategy. Then again, it sort of depends on the situation and pitcher. Obviously you're gonna attack Johan differently than Ponson.

QUOTE(mreye @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 12:59 PM) Oh come on! What did he ask? Something similar happened about five (or so) years ago. The priest was in his homily and, IIRC, the women pretty much just interrupted him. It was a mass during the week -- a 7:00 a.m. one so there weren't a lot of people here. But I think she was 'correcting' the priest as they were talking about the history of the church. This lady wanted to debate right in the middle of his homily. Finally the priest said that he'd talk to her sometime after mass. Very odd experience.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 08:33 PM) im glad you are living in bizarro baseball world then, because I would love a run in every 1st inning of every game. Sacrificing an out in the first inning isn't the smartest strategy, IMO, as Thome is as likely to hit a double or homer as he is to strike out. I'm sure hitless would take the run every time, too, but that isn't exactly the point.

QUOTE(watchtower41 @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) Beating a team with 20+ wins and the toughest schedule in the country isnt somebody? Well, that one flew right over your head. I'm pretty sure the exclamation point meant sarcasm... Yeesh, don't you Jayhawk fans know what sarcasm is? -
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 04:46 AM) He'd probably have a better shot of winning a bullpen role, but I know I'd rather have him starting -- whether in Chicago or Birmingham. Hopefully our coaches feel the same way. I think the Sox are 'overthinking' the bullpen situation. Obviously the top three are set in stone. The next two spots I'd give to Logan and Haeger -- Logan has the stuff to succeed, just has to make sure he's 'A-okay' between the ears, and Haeger succeeded in the role last year (sample size issues are understood), will be nice to have on the days where whoever our fifth starter is doesn't have it (and those days will be there, much moreso than last year), and I assume that a knuckler should be able to bounce between a reliever to a starter relatively easily. The last bullpen spot should be the only bullpen spot up for grabs. I'd give it to Masset because he's already tried and not done very well as a starter, and despite all the starter talk, I don't know how he fits in (he wouldn't get a shot for at least two years, as he's behind Danks, Floyd, Haeger, and perhaps guys like Russell, Gio, and Broadway). Plus, part of the reason the Sox got him was because his great winter league performance -- as a closer. I should also note that this would leave the Charlotte rotation as Danks/Floyd - Sisco - Broadway - Phillips - Gonzalez/Russell (?). That right there would be worth paying for the minor league TV for 2007.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 10:40 PM) So, as of today, Darin Erstad is hitting this spring: .275, with an OBP of .302 and a slugging %age of .333. Yes, that's right, he's having such a great spring that his OPS is at .635. He's also leading the team in strikeouts. And he's leading the team in at-bats. Talk about going out and 'winning a job' in the Spring. Gosh damn did he earn it!

QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 11:26 PM) We didn't win the last game of the world series with long balls. We won it doing the right thing at the right time. That team had a way of finding ways to win, and they did it any way they could, with or without the HR. Nice -- pick one of the post season game where we didn't hit a homer. Because the rest of our wins, the home run was the reason our offense scored runs. Yep -- every single one of them except the for game two of the ALCS. And even in Game 4 of the WS, our offense was bad. One run in nine innings against Backe wasn't good. But Garcia was better than Backe so we won. That's okay... if you want to believe that the reason the Sox score runs is because of magic pixie dust and bunts, go ahead. Just know that the stats show that you're completely wrong.
