QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Apr 17, 2005 -> 11:04 AM) Good thoughts in this thread, let's keep em coming. My take on the whole deadline scenario is this, I think we'll be trading for a bullpen guy as well. But it won't be a closer, b/w Shingo who I think will come around again and Hermanson the Sox are very well covered there, a lot better then some other teams in this league. If we trade for someone, it will be a lefty specialist. Cotts is struggling right now, although we all still love his potential, and Marte still looks like he hasn't returned to his dominating form of 2002 and 2003 even though he's been better. A guy like Ron Vilionie (I know I didn't spell that right), Joey Eischen, could help this pen even more. I'd be in favor of at least giving Walker a shot before pulling the trigger on a deal.

QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 16, 2005 -> 09:22 PM) One thing I do know is the Mariners have been spending LOTS of time drilling catching fundamentals into Miguel Olivo's head. They've been working with him on just about everything. And he'll probably improve as he goes, but the Sox had a very similar approach with him.

QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Apr 10, 2005 -> 11:39 PM) You got a string of right handers in the middle of the lineup. I'm guessing that he just wanted Timo to break up the monotony. And yes, it appeared to work. So whats the problem? Some people are never happy.

QUOTE(BridgeportHeather @ Apr 10, 2005 -> 07:07 AM) Shouldn't Gardenhire be a little nervous considering the fact that Silva is gonna be out for over half the season, so they're gonna have to go with a "patch-up" 5th starter for a great deal of time? The fifth starter is overrated. We were okay without one

Joe certainly still has an opportunity to have some good major league seasons in his future. Although with the Sox, very deep with outfielders now and in the future, probably don't need Borchard. I like the guy, but it probably makes sense for both parties to explore other options. That is to say if we get quality return, which doesn't necessarily mean blockbuster. Rather something the Sox could value down the line.

C.C. Sabathia - S - CLE C.C. Sabathia was scratched from his start today after straining a muscle in his right side while warming up. Sabathia refused to talk about the severity of the strain. It's currently unclear whether it's a day-to-day injury or something that will sideline him for a few weeks and keep him off the mound on Opening Day. Mar. 6 - 2:41 pm et

QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 05:32 AM) Um...+425? Where? I want to know NOW so I can go put $100 on the Sox. It's on parlaybook.com. It's an offshore casino, but me and my buddy used it last year, and we got a check from, it was a Miami bank.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 09:37 PM) 80 wins and a third place finish. Who do you have in first and second?

QUOTE(winodj @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) Does the position of the starter really matter? If he's a quality starter and he's in a rotation - who cares if he's 3rd or 5th or 1st? More of a general baseball question I guess. It can matter as far as match ups are concerned. You certainly would rather avoid you're #5 going up against their #1 or #2. However, with Jose, he should be fine in the #3 spot, especially with the reasoning behind it.
-
QUOTE(winodj @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 04:00 PM) 87 wins and the division title. The Sox will win one game in the division series. The best showing in the playoffs since 1983. I wagered on that as well. The odds for the division have the Sox at +425, unbelieveable.
-
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 03:44 AM) that'd be awesome if we were over. It's definitely attainable, we won about as many games last year, and I happen to think we improved. At least I hope so, I wagered a little that we would.

These are the odds for the Sox regular season as of now.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 11:10 PM) While this line is very much true, I find it kind of funny and full of irony. Part of the goal of the White Sox this offseason was to get rid of the power and add more on-base faster players who have good defense. Is that not EXACTLY what Harris is, especially against RHP? I know he's gone, and I know he has a questionable attitude...I just kind of think that is funny. Harris doesn't utilize his speed, so what good is it if you can't manufacture anything with it. He's young, but Harris has flaws that prevent the Sox from making him the everyday second baseman. Ironic, maybe, but smart nonetheless.

QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 07:37 PM) Keith, I think your Option B is what this spring is all about. I truly believe they haven't found the right deal yet. It makes sense to wait as well because, guys may get hurt on other teams, or simply guys not playing up to expectations in ST who may look to us to acquire Harris. Value is all about demand, and the demand may be highest when ST is going on, or nearing completion.

Sox trade Escobar to Washington Nationals
SkokieSox replied to maggsmaggs's topic in FutureSox Board
Alex Escobar - OF - WAS Nationals acquired outfielder Alex Escobar from the White Sox for outfielder Jerry Owens. Ridiculous. Jim Bowden, forever obsessed with toolsy outfielders, never could get Escobar while he was with the Reds. Now he has him, but there's absolutely no place for him on the roster and he's out of options. If this were a free pickup, then we wouldn't have much of a problem with it, but in trading Owens, a 2003 second-round pick, he's surrendering one of the few position player prospects the Nationals have. A good move by White Sox GM Ken Williams. Feb. 13 - 2:40 pm et -

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 13, 2005 -> 07:42 PM) He's a little old (24) for A ball don't you think? 108G 292A, 1HR, 37RBI, 30B w Class A Savannah 2004. 6'3", 195#. .292A .365O .349S 30/43 SB% 49WHBP 59K. I think Escobar has a better future. He's about to turn 24, and maybe he'll be bumped to AA this year. I don't know that he will or won't, but having a guy with his speed could end up being a very good thing in the future. We have enough outfield depth for this year, Escobar was more of an insurance policy. However, if anyone were to go down, Anderson would probably be a better option anyhow, IMO. -
QUOTE(Beastly @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 12:00 PM) All you guys aren't thinking of what he did when he was here. So he signed with another team? We got Dye to replace him, who is a gamble yet, a lot more versatile. I will cheer when he comes back to Chicago. It's easy to turn on someone when they go ahead and turn on you. It's like your dog that you raised biting your hand while feeding him, running to your neighbors, and viciously barking at you every time you walk past his fence. Maggs- :finger

QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Feb 4, 2005 -> 12:15 PM) Patterson is rated higher than Posednik because of his potential, but they ignore potential when looking at Iguchi vs. Walker, who by the way cannot turn a double play. Rowand is defensive minded. This is the world's greatest newspaper? Well, they make a great fish wrapper and bird cage liner. Exactly, I found it amusing with Walker too, who is the worst DP second basmean in the league. Although this struck me as well, Patterson rates ahead of Posednik (which we already described as faulty comparison based on position) because of potential, yet until AJ proves he can overcome be bad, bad boy, Barret will rank ahead of him? Can anyone say inconsistent?

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 11:18 PM) Be rest assured the SOX will not be the only team looking at Sheets. Just about every club with some $ to spend will be. All of the SOX starters are signed to reasonable contracts so the SOX should have the advantage there. But don't be surprised if it takes Mark or Freddy to land Sheets. Milw will not likely trade him w/out getting at least a #2 in return. The only exception I could see to that is if 1 of Hernandez, Contreras, or Garland is having a great 1/2 half. That might be enough to build a trade around w prospects. That would be sweet. I think Garland, Anderson, and McCarthy would probably get it done, and possibly a throw in. Cheap talent is the key, and that fits the bill. Would we be willing to give up those players for Sheets? My guess is most would say yes, and I'm certain KW would say yes. Although I would love to hang on to the prospects, a chance at getting Sheets is just too overpowering, especially if we're in contention. However, I would have to be certain that we'd be able to get a three year deal out of him in order to pull the trigger.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 07:58 AM) I hate when people throw this steroid stuff around so quickly. The moodiness question .... He had that one year in Boston, other that he's been totally professional. That was a Boston spin job. And the weight? Hell, everyone could see he needed to drop 15 pounds. We'd all be b****ing if he hadn't dropped the weight. He looked fit at Sox Fest and ready to go. He was overweight last year, so he lost fat weight, not muscle. (agreeing with you)

QUOTE(quickman @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 01:35 AM) Ok so you are agreeing with me that they don't have anyone that can spot start and make a difference? Your like switzerland. Why can't Hermanson spot start if needed? -
It has been mentioned that Everett will lose his value once Frank comes back. I like Frank, and I hope he comes back strong. However, the Sox, if they want to be a contender, must be prepared for the reality that he may not come back and automatically be productive. No ST or live major league pitching, and he may be a little rusty. Also the injury factor, Everett will have value to this team throughout the duration of the season IMO.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 12:13 AM) How about a three way deal with the Angels? Dodgers get Crede, Angels get Weaver, Sox get Chone Figgins. Don't know about the Dodgers or Angels, but I'd do it in a heartbeat. I don't think they would either, but ya, I'd do that.
