The question so obvious that noone thought to ask

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 12:18 PM) How about Derek Anderson next year as QB? You're prepared to give up a first rounder in '08 and '09? -

I think Williams may have been better if he hadn't had that year of limbo between USC and the NFL. He needed that extra learning year. -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 03:36 AM) I really wanted Derek Johnson, our linebackers all 3 would be just so beastly.... plus it would lessen the blow a lot when/if Briggs leaves in f/a. I did originally as well. But, he wasn't projected to the Bears pick. He was considered more of a midround guy. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 12:11 PM) Which one are you alleging is older than listed? Soriano. Latin American players try and lie about their age quite often. Beltre and Furcal as two examples.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 06:54 AM) And Thomas, Ventura, Alex Fernandez, the young pitchers like Britt Burns, Rich Gossage, Terry Forster, and position players like Ray Durham, there was always someone ready. There were more, but the point is, we have nothing resembling this any more You realize why, right? Most of those players were high draft choices. The Sox haven't picked that high in quite awhile. Fernandez was #4 - he flamed out fast. Thomas was #7. Ventura was #10 Burns was a decent 3rd rounder who had a short career as a 4th starter. Gossage was a 9th round HS guy that they succeeded with - like Buehrle. Forster was a 2nd rounder who had constant weight and control issues. Durham was a 5th rounder that was a HS guy who chose to forgo college, otherwise he might have been a 1st rounder. Everything always looks rosier when you look back on it with nostalgia.

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 02:15 AM) Wasn't the Sox' farm system rated #1 in 2000? I believe it was. Hmmm... Rauch, Kip Wells, Fogg, Wright, Majewski, Dellaero, Borchard, Myette, Liefer, Barcelo, Eyre, Guerrier, Ginter, Rowand, Buehrle, Crede, Garland... At least 13 of the 17 never made much of themselves.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 10:02 PM) Yes, a steady decline-as an entire organization, mostly during the Williams regime. Many of you arent old enough to remember the respected farm system we once had. Are we talking Ordonez/Lee/Crede/Garland/Buehrle, etc.? That was 1998/1999; not that long ago. Most of their other minor leaguers were overvalued.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 12:11 AM) I want to squeeze Lou Holtz and see what comes out of him. Frosting's always inside an EL Fudge cookie. -
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 07:33 PM) Which is exactly why he's very "touchable". Kind of scary, isn't it? The words "Jenks" and "touchable" should never be in the same sentence. That's just wrong.

The problem with the Bears is that they haven't had an impact 1st rounder in awhile. Sure, they get 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounders to be capable starters, but no real Pro Bowlers (Briggs and Brown maybe). I'll be fair and go back only 10 years: 1997 - No #1 pick 1998 - Curtis (P)Enis 1999 - Cade McC(l)own 2000 - Brian Urlacher 2001 - David Terrell 2002 - Marc Columbo 2003 - Michael Haynes, Rex Grossman 2004 - Tommie Harris 2005 - Cedric Benson 2006 - No #1 pick 2007 - Greg Olsen The guys in bold are Pro Bowlers Two in ten years of drafting #1 picks is pretty sad.
-
IMO, they should have drafted a guard is this past year's draft with their #1.
-
If they're dealing Martinez and Milledge, they won't want to deal Gomez I'm sure. Humber has a history of elbow injuries. At least Heilman can be the 4th/5th guy or long relief.
-
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines Ruben Brown is out for the year He could be done, period.

Could the Mets send Mike Pelfrey, Fernando Martinez, Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman to the Twins for Johan and make it happen? Would they?

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 07:58 PM) Well, we just assured ourselves a 90+ loss season. That might have seriously done it. I can't believe Kenny is that much of a f***ing idiot. Wow, just when I start thinking hes getting there (Myers, Erstad) he goes and gives one of the 10 worst hitter in White Sox (MLB?) history a new deal. Un-f***ing-believable. I don't know where these magic players are coming from that are better/younger/cheaper than Uribe that you want. Tejada's not coming. Eckstein's hurt and older. Greene's not leaving SD. Wilson and Everett can't hit for average OR power. Vizquel's too old. Furcal might come. While costing us prime prospects or a quality SP in Garland. Also, he's 13.7 mil a year, declining, and is a notorious "me" guy. Uribe costs the Sox no players to get and 4.5 mil isn't bad for a SS of his defensive caliber. I understand your frustration, but the offseason's far from over.

Mr. Peanut must love you. But seriously, Colon is a money pit of a baseball player.

This just in: Kenny Williams is not stupid. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....eins-healt.html

I hardly think comparing a professional baseball athlete to an amateur long distance runner is a fair comparison. Besides, Uribe's still a younger option than any potential SS free agent, he plays quality D for the most part, and likes being in Chicago. If it helps at all, should he fail again offensively in '08, he's probably gone.

QUOTE(rockren @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 04:21 PM) No chance in hell with Uribe hitting .255. I know you already know this and was stating the above as an admiration, but he's hit .234 the past two seasons combined. Uribe is terrible and I'm not over thrilled with the re-signing to say the least. He can hit .255. He's hit .252, .253, and .283 before. It's amazing what some guys can do in their contract years.
-
Re-signing Uribe is the most secure move for the short term. Now they have the freedom to avoid mediocre shortstops in free agency and shore up their bullpen, while getting a better CF. This also helps in trades. They can focus on Crede or Fields in trade offers and shop Garland. Uribe re-signing doesn't mean he's annointed 2008 starter, it just means that he was the youngest, easiest option that KW had at the time. For all we know, they may trade for a SS and send Uribe packing in another trade later on. Uribe can also be plan C at third base. Fields might be better in leftfield or traded for a centerfielder, Crede can be sent to New York/Anaheim/San Francisco for younger players. It's all speculation at this point, but hey, it's November.

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 03:54 PM) serious question. There are offensive holes at LF, CF, SS and 2B. Even 3B/LF, as good as Josh has been, can he hit higher than .265 next year? can this team afford to have more than 1? Serious questions are often rhetorical. You asked your question in order to get the "duh" answer that you agree with already, not to get a new answer. Rhetorical - A question with no need for an answer. But, here we go... The Sox can't afford to have batting averages slump as low as 2007's were if they expect to be better than last season. If Uribe can hit .255, Richar can hit .265, Konerko can rebound to .280, Crede get .270, Fields .270.. we're competing for the wild card. Now, if only we had a bullpen...
