  1. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 01:10 PM) These tickets are twice as expensive as the Blackhawks Game 1 Stanley Cup tickets. Green? Comparing the Blackhawks and hockey to the Bears and football under any circumstance is like comparing Mrs. Roper to my young, sweet Miranda Cosgrove. Who turns 18 this year by the way. So I can no longer be considered a pedophile.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 02:42 PM) I don't know all of the millions of prospects that have come up in the 100+ years of the sport but I'd assume there were some. So you can be proven before ever taking a major league at-bat or throwing a major league pitch? This is news to me. Anyway, I still can't think of one person that's ever wanted to trade Danks just to get a sexy collection of prospects back. It's all about maximizing his value while still under club control. Because if he hits FA then that's a wrap. The Yankees will be on him like a cat in heat.
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 02:33 PM) Think of all the unproven prospects we could get for him! Has there ever been a 'proven' prospect in the history of the sport?
  4. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 02:32 PM) Er, I'd want to hold on to Danks as long as possible, but maybe I'm missing something. We ALL do. But we don't want to see NY swoop in and offer him something we surely wouldn't attempt to match. It's not a big concern now. Danks will obviously be a White Sox for '11. But come next off-season they better get something done. Or else I'm all for dealing him for the best possible package.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) I bet if they offered a Lester type deal he'd turn it down, is that unfair? And I also bet you TCQ wishes he took that same offer as well. Lester clearly went with the security. I'm sure he regrets that deal now that's he's become arguably the top left-handed starter in the AL. No idea exactly how much more he'd be making now if he hadn't signed the deal. But I'm sure he's lost out on a decent chunk of change.
  6. Brewers ink Fielder to a 1-year, $15.5 million dollar deal. This basically should be a wrap for him as a Brewer. It's going to be very interesting next off-season when Pujols/Fielder [i'm assuming Pujols will] hit the FA market and the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies and Tigers, basically 4 of the top 6 or 7 teams payroll wise the last few years, won't be anywhere in the conversation.
  7. Danks is going to test the FA market. You can take that to the bank.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 02:00 PM) Apparently the Royals payroll is going to be around Alex Rodriquez's if nothing else changes. I'm sure they'll sign a vet or two before the season starts. Then they've got arb-eligible players like Billy Butler that have to get deals done. But that's exactly how they should play it. They're waiting for their kids. No sense in handing out multi-year deals and wasting coin on second and third-tier guys that will have no impact whatsoever on their wins/losses.
  9. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 02:40 AM) Well even just using the White Sox as a hypothetical, even if the package wouldn't be good enough, is trading Beckham, Morel, Viciedo, Sale, Santos, and Thompson worth 2 months of Pujols? I don't think it'd even be possible for the Cards to trade him at the deadline simply because there is no way in hell they'd receive proper value for him. The only teams that I can think of that really have the depth in their farm systems to make such a move - we are talking like 2 top 20 prospects and 2 more top 50 - will be long out of contention and/or* I don't see any way possible that he'd sign a contract extension with them. *the "or" included because Tampa Bay would almost certainly have enough and shouldn't be long out of contention, but there's no way they'd be able to pony up the resources necessary to resign him, though that goes without saying The Braves are a team that come to mind. Outside of the Royals, they might have more high-ceiling talent than any system out there. They've certainly got the pitching. But again, no team [smart team anyway] is going to butt-f*** themselves for a couple months of Pujols, even assuming the Cards did try to trade him. And it's very unlikely that the Cards would be anywhere near out of the race to consider it even for that reason.
  10. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 12:27 AM) Then they walk away with a handful of prospects and save $6.5M (since they won't pay him once he leaves) + a couple more million they would have spent on those 2 draft picks. Seems like a good plan to me. So you could be talking about a handful of prospects, plus close to $9M saved. Do you really think there's a team out there that's going to gut their farm for a couple months of Pujols? In other words, would you trade Sale, Viciedo, maybe, you know what, nevermind. I can't even use the White Sox in this hypothetical because the farm is so bad. I can't even come up with a fantasy trade that could net us Pujols.
  11. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 05:04 PM) 47 and 14 for Blake with 40 seconds left. Maybe he can take off from beyond the arc and dunk in a 3 for 50! He's stupid good. Having the best rookie season, IMO, since Tim Duncan. I believe he's now recorded 27 consecutive double/doubles.
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 02:22 PM) Only have seen 1 name the Cubs are getting back, but it's 22-year-old lefty OF Michael Burgess who put up some pretty impressive numbers in AA. I think the Cubs are going to win big in this deal. Not really. Only 87 of Burgess' 529 PAs last year came in AA. I doubt the other two prospects are much of anything. You don't gut your farm for Tom Gorzelanny.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) They already had him for 3 more years before this deal. It's simply about financial security. This deal really makes no sense when you think about it. Even assuming Votto has 2-3 more seasons like he had in '10, would he really have made that much more through arbitration than what he'll be making now?
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 12:20 PM) They didn't really lock him up at all though. Wow, you're right. I didn't know he still had 3 arb years left. I figured he had 1.
  15. QUOTE (DOWNTOWN PANTHER @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) This is AWESOME!! Im happy the Reds can have him for at least 3 more years. I like our team this year!! You should be. Always a good thing to me when a team can lock up their homegrown talent. Gonna be fun watching Votto and Bruce s*** on the Cubs for the foreseeable future.
  16. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 10:43 AM) Fuentes is getting 2 years and $10.5 million with an option for a 3rd. A slight overpay, IMO, for a guy that won't be closing or really even setting up [i imagine Balfour will be the primary set-up guy]. But a nice move overall. The A's have the potential to be the '11 version of the Giants.
  17. A's signed Brian Fuentes to a two-year deal. Don't know what they're paying him. I would imagine it wouldn't be much more than what they gave Balfour. Their bullpen is really deep now. Really, really underrated off-season for the A's. I'd say only the Red Sox and Brewers have had better ones.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 10:03 AM) Buster Olney: Sucks if true. I wonder if we've even made an attempt to bring him back. Mark Teahen and I guess De Aza as our current backup outfielders makes my stomach hurt a little.
  19. I know you can't really compare the two situations, but it's funny to me the current league MVP will be making, what, 1.5 million more per season for the next three years than the Yankees new set-up man.
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 08:02 PM) You'd be correct. Cool. I was just curious. I just assume anybody on this board is a Sox fan first and foremost. Nothing wrong with the Bears being your primary team.
  21. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 06:58 PM) Wow Houshmanzadeh is garbage. Flacco actually managed to throw an accurate pass in the face of a blitz, right at him, and he f***ing dropped it. Question. Are the Bears your number 1 team? Seems like you critique them in a way that you don't the Sox or Bulls. I know I 'hate' on the Sox more than the other two teams [the Blackhawks and hockey don't exist to me] because the Sox are my favorite team in pro sports.
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 04:36 PM) Well, I can concede your position has merit. It's a calculated risk I would have taken, given our roster and contract commitments, but that is certainly up for debate. What I don't agree with, is this notion that paying for elite defense is somehow wrong. And I definitely understand your point of view. See, this is good for me. I'm learning how to have a debate with somebody without coming off like a dick. I can be fixed. Oh yes.
  23. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 04:25 PM) Do you really think that Adrian Gonzalez is going to sign a 6/$96 extension? No, I don't. I guess I said that wrong. I'm just saying at that many years and that kinda coin [is it almost 17 million?], he's being paid like a superstar or damn near close to it. And he quite frankly hasn't been that for a majority of his career. Ballparks be damned.
  24. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) I'm not saying the guy is Adrian Gonzalez. I'm saying he's Adrian Beltre. And I'm not saying I would have been comfortable offering what the Rangers offered, I said I think if we would have offered 5/$78 2 months ago maybe we would have been able to get it done. I think Beltre will probably slow down in year 4 and 5, but I think his production in years 1-3 will help offset that. But he's being paid like he's Gonzalez because of his defensive reputation. That's my point. And c'mon, Shack. Beltre was not signing a damn thing two months ago. His agent is Boras.
  25. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 04:06 PM) He's played the majority of his career in not only Safeco, but Dodger stadium as well. He's hit 20 or more homers in 8 seasons, and 19 in another, so let's not pretend like he's some garbage player offensively. He's going to produce quite a bit in Texas in that lineup, so I don't think you're going to think he's some schlep at the plate after the next few years. I understand you guys may want to discount the value Fangraphs assign to players, and maybe it isn't completely accurate all the time, but it's still a hell of a lot better than some random opinion you guys are pulling out of thin air. I edited my post and added some stuff. Not sure you saw it. But Agon was still able to put up monster seasons playing half his game at Petco. The messiah for pitchers' parks. All I'm saying is that by year 3, or maybe even earlier, the Rangers could be regretting that deal. But I get what you're saying as far as just 2011 or even 2012 goes. I'm not that kinda fan. I think more like a GM. Well a GM not named Kenny Williams. I look at 3-5 years down the road as much as I do the current year. That's why I value draft picks and a strong farm more than the average fan does.
