The Official Stephen Strasburg needs Tommy John Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 04:34 PM) KC has 5 hits off of him. They've gotten some real nice hacks off him. Jose Guillen is quietly having a pretty good season.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:46 AM) B-R is amazing. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/...L&year=2010 http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/...B&year=2010 what's even better, that I'd never noticed before, was if you click on the position itself ("as SS"), it lists the teams in order of offensive production. Only 3 teams have a SS with an OPS over .800 - the Rockies, Marlins, and Giants, and only 6 have a SS with an OPS of greater than .750 - the Blue Jays, Dodgers, and Yankees join the group. I haven't looked at his WAR, but I would imagine that Alexei Ramirez is the most valuable, or very close to the most valuable, shortstop in the AL right now. EDIT again: I suck. Marco Scutaro, followed by Derek Jeter, followed by Alex Gonzalez. This is true. Thanks for the links. I can't believe I didn't realize baseball reference had these splits. I've been a regular at that site for years.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:46 AM) You can get them at ESPN.com, just go to the team stats and sort by position. The issue with them is...they're including everyone who has played SS, including people who have sucked as replacements/bench players. Of course, this does appear to be a down season for SS stats as of now, but here's a different way to look at Alexei's bat so far: Alexei Ramirez has an OPS 20 points lower than Yuniesky Betancourt. Check post #22. That's never, ever good when you have a lower anything than Yuniesky.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:34 AM) MLB SS's splits - .262/.320/.371/.691 AL SS's splits - .259/.316/.360/.676 Alexei Ramirez - .262/.294/.393/.688 He looks like an average shortstop offensively to me. Nice. Where do you find those splits?

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 20, 2010 -> 09:39 PM) In each of his last 8 starts, he has given up one ER or less, a total of 4 ERs. With Johnson, Carpenter, & Marcum, just to name a few, I'd say the doctors have this whole Tommy John surgery thing figured out. Just found out that this has only been done eight times since 1900. And he's one more start of 1 ER or less at becoming only the third pitcher since 1900 to accomplish this feat in 9 consecutive starts (the only two being Bob Gibson and a guy named Jack Coombs). Josh Johnson is on a historical run of excellence and he's getting about 2.3% of the pub that Strasburg gets for picking his nose.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 08:44 AM) I'm not gonna look it up, but is that seriously a below average line for a major league shortstop? I know he'll never be an OBP guy but I just figured his offense was at least major-league average for the position. I don't have or know where to find league average numbers for specific positions. I just go to fangraphs and look at his rankings in certain categories amongst everyday shortstops. And it's never a good thing when you have a lower OPS than Yuniesky Betancourt.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 07:07 AM) Ehh...at the shortstop position? I'm fine with it. He's on pace to put up a .262/14/62 line at that position and we know he's capable of more power than that so there's not a lot of complaining to do there for me. Yes, even at the SS position a .262/.294/.393/.688 line is below average. And why do we know he's capable of more power? Until he proves otherwise, 2008 might've very well been an outlier, as he hasn't shown anything close to that type of power in the last year and a half.

Who makes the All Star Game for the Sox?
QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 11:05 PM) Bobby pitched like an all star once again this evening....it really will be a shame if he's excluded from the All Star game. greg has multiple accounts?

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 10:53 PM) Oooooooh, oooooooooh, ooooooooh, trade Mark! Trade AJ! Bring up Flowers cuz he's so great! Ooooooh, tanking is so fun! We'll never catch the Twins!!!! Please gimme some Jordan Danks! Oh, Freddy's done! Peavy will never pitch well again! LOL. Eat it yall. LMAO. Dude, you're lame as hell. You were one of the main culprits when it came to "f*** KW! f*** OZZIE! f*** THIS TEAM! BLOW IT UP!" Don't even think about trying to call out other folks.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) Really? Yes. I made a comment during the Washington series that he was playing a fabulous SS. And that was without looking at UZR (obviously UZR backs it up). I still think Elvis Andrus is or will be the best defensive SS in the AL in the long run. But Alexei has been better than anybody to this point (and of course Jeter is probably the gold glove favorite).

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) I'd applaud Ozzie. Jaso's 25:15 BB:K (.409 OBP) is pretty impressive. Considering Upton and Bartlett are giving the team nothing, this is a pretty logical move, imo. It's not like this is Corky Miller. Jaso is just 26 years old, a rookie, and has some pretty good minor league numbers. Didn't realize the BB/K ratio was that good. And you're definitely one of the few. But like I said, Maddon has been getting criticized for a while now. I guess my point is that if you never left Soxtalk, you would think we were the only team out of 30 that had a manager that made "questionable" moves/decisions.

Good news, I think. Alexei's bat is still below average, but we can't afford to lose that glove.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) Remember him homering off of Jenks in 2008, the game Thome eventually walked the Angels off? I remember. He still has no business being employed by a Major League baseball team.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) Is it wrong to hope that Alexei can't play tomorrow so hopefully Hot Fire will be in there at 3B (Vizquel to SS) for the game tomorrow in which I will be attending.....? Yes, it's wrong. Anytime Buehrle is pitching you want the best defensive team you can field behind him. And Alexei has been the best defensive SS in baseball this season.

Kudos to the offense. 9 runs and 13 hits off a heck of a pitcher.

QUOTE (beckham15 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 09:46 PM) im so pissed at his contract.... he shouldn't be pitching on this ballclub...i almost wish they'd just eat his contract he sucks I'm pretty sure the White Sox have learned their lesson. You don't give out multi-year deals (inexplicably 4 years) to non-elite relievers who were already on the downslope before you signed them.

Amazing that you have two guys in a major league bullpen that you can't use late when you're up 5 or more runs.

QUOTE (beckham15 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 09:36 PM) at this point i wish we could just release both williams and linestink I'll be content as long as they're pitching in games where we're either up or down big. KW does have to find us another lefty though.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 08:18 PM) Jose Bautista is the first to 20 homers, and is back in the MLB lead. He has 2 tonight. He had been in a pretty nasty funk (3/36) or something like that up until the last couple games. Looks like he's getting hot again. And another of the seemingly endless young premier pitching talents in the NL, Mat Latos, completely dominates Tampa Bay: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K. Anybody catch John Jaso leading off for Tampa tonight? Joe Maddon has been receiving quite a bit of criticism for some of his lineups of late. Soxtalk would be ready to decapitate Ozzie were he ever to bat a no-name catcher leadoff.

Why is Randy Williams on this team?
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 01:23 PM) To remind people that Damaso Marte wasn't actually all that bad. It's a shame that because of his mediocre 2005 (and infamous almost game 3 debacle against the Red Sox) that many have forgotten just how unbelievably dominant Marte was for most of his tenure with the Sox.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 04:49 PM) That's a copout. I assume that this means that you rate Luol Deng as Pippen-like? Um, no. As Deng is nowhere near the ball-handler, shooter or athlete Pippen was. Just because Bill Wennington once said the two were similar like 5 years ago didn't really give it any merit. Dirk has a similar skillset to Larry Bird. Does that mean he's Bird's equal? No. It's not that difficult to see a lot of Rodman in Noah when he's playing. And that doesn't mean I'm disrespecting Rodman because I dare say there's a player in the league that mimics him.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 08:26 AM) Oh boy are we greatly overrating Noah. I like the kid, but Rodman was on his own planet. I'm not overrating anybody. I said Rodman-like. As he brings a similar skill-set and intangibles that Rodman brought. Of course I'm not saying he's Rodman overall.

QUOTE (T R U @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 02:53 AM) Kobe has also been in the league a lot longer than LeBron, and has had guys like Shaq in his prime and Pau Gasol and Phil Jackson.. Kobe was straight trash before Gasol got there.. If you put LeBron in a situation where he has a Shaq or Gasol or just someone to help him out, you will see a difference.. That's kinda my point. Lebron, like Kobe, needs legitimate help. He's not going to get that in Cleveland unless something drastic happens (kinda like the Lakers getting Gasol for a dirty diaper).
