5/6 Games
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 6, 2010 -> 09:38 PM) Shelby's K to BB ratio is like 22 to 5 and he's 25 in AA. No, he is not a prospect IMO. No doubt. All the momentum he built up after an excellent '08 is all but gone. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ May 6, 2010 -> 11:38 PM) Dayan Viciedo is a legit prospect. He is proving he can manhandle AAA pitching; think it's good he can sustain it in stretches too. 2 walks is pretty ridiculous, but maybe Cubans just believe hitting is the only way to get on. And he's young as all hell. What if he keeps this up for another month or two; how long can we really hold him down there? Is September the absolute earliest? Viciedo better not sniff Chicago. He needs to be in AAA all year.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 6, 2010 -> 10:11 PM) Contreras had an ERA of somewhere around 2 in his final 8 starts in the regular season (all of which he had won). Teams had virtually no shot against him. Buehrle had solid velocity and has always been a fantastic pitcher, regardless of his "stuff." Freddy Garcia's stuff looked good and he was coming off a very solid season. Jon Garland was coming off the best season of his career with an ERA around 3.50, and he was the #4 starter. People that weren't overly impressed with the White Sox pitching staff heading into the postseason were generally talking out of their ass. To be fair, he did say going into the 2005 season. Not postseason. Still not a good comparison. I mean the Rangers are third or fourth in the AL in team ERA. Are we gonna channel the '05 White Sox for them, too?

Pods
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 6, 2010 -> 11:01 PM) It also means there was a very damned good reason why Pods isn't a member of the Sox right now. That won't stop Team Pods (bigsqwert, jphat, ect) from making it their mission to make sure we're all aware at ALL TIMES when Pods gets a hit.

Man the Rays need to stop. Another 8-0 waxing and 3-game sweep of the Mariners. They're now 12-1 on the road. 21-7 overall. They've outscored their opponents by a staggering 83 runs. That's insane for early May.

2010 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 6, 2010 -> 10:16 PM) It's not going to matter at the end of the year when the Cards win the division by 10+ games. There is no one in that division who can compete with them barring an injury to Pujols or Holliday. This. And with Brad Penny's FB somehow topping out at 97 MPH and the emergence of Jaime Garcia, they're basically the Giants with an elite offense. The Phillies and Cardinals are head and shoulders above anybody in the NL.

Lance Berkman
QUOTE (T R U @ May 6, 2010 -> 09:14 PM) Drayton McLane was on the radio today and said that he has no intentions of dealing Berkman, and even with their slow start have no intentions of trading away their big name players.. obviously that could change, but I doubt it.. even when they have stunk in the first half in years past they have never really been one to trade away their big players.. And this is one of the reasons that organization is in the TERRIBLE shape they're in.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 6, 2010 -> 03:46 PM) But you can somehow predict that Minnesota's will ultimately fail this year. If saying the Twins are not as good as NY and Tampa is saying they're certain to fail then so be it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 6, 2010 -> 03:46 PM) The other replacement power guy was supposed to be Carlos Quentin, but no one seems to know what happened to him. Bingo.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 6, 2010 -> 03:32 PM) I don't know about that. We could still use one of them as a DH with Jones in the OF. Which wouldn't make any since with Juan Pierre on the team. And I for one still think it's risky to have Andruw in the OF everyday. Which would be required when talking about DH only players like Vlad, Matsui and Thome.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 6, 2010 -> 03:07 PM) They did win 3 of 4, but I don't know if I'd call it taking them to school. Monday STL won, Tuesday was a 10-inning pitchers duel, Wed. the Phillies did outplay them, but today was Halladay vs. Kyle freaking Lohse, a 7-2 PHI win was easily predictable. You don't have to win every game by 5+ runs to thoroughly outplay a team. I watched most of the last three games. And the Phillies pitched the s*** outta the ball. Anytime the Cards looked primed to score, a Philly pitcher made a big pitch. Yeah, Halladay vs Loshe was predictable. But was Kyle Kendrick throwing 7 innings of shutout ball last night predictable?

The Phillies have really taken the Cardinals to school the last few games.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 6, 2010 -> 01:02 PM) I really didn't do that either. Was it not fair to say that our rotation on paper wasn't overly impressing anyone before the 2005 season? Where people clamoring all over the place saying that we had a World Series caliber pitching rotation? If so, I must have missed it. No, it's not really fair. The Sox are never a sexy preseason pick anyway. But most who knew anything about the club knew that SP was a potential strength. Did anybody know they would be THAT good? Of course not. You can't predict s*** like that.

The Teahen's D At Third thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2010 -> 01:37 PM) But, would you really say that you would rather KEEP Andruw Jones (at the same contract numbers he signed with KW) for the rest of the season OR swap him out for Matsui, Thome, Damon, Vlad, Dunn, etc.? Am I not understanding this question? Are you asking would I rather Keep AJ at 500 K or swap him for one of those other players? Do I even have to answer this? QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ May 6, 2010 -> 02:39 PM) Actually, with how players are being paid nowadays, that extra 1.7/2.5 million could've gone towards signing a quality reliever or even a DH next year or 2 years from now. Or even used to fill out any other need. As Kalapse pointed out, my estimates were off. And you're really nitpicking when talking about how a quality reliever or a DH two years from now could be acquired.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2010 -> 06:43 PM) When does your contract run out, Hawk? Because it might be a REALLY long season for you, Ozzerooo and KW. Hope you can make it through the remainder of the season! FWIW, we don't have that many "bad" contracts on our team. Right now, it's limited to Linebrink, Pierre and Teahen. If you want to argue (with someone here), you can also include Peavy, Rios/Konerko (with the start he's having, you can't easily argue that his contract is "bad value") and Buehrle. I don't really care about Castro, Kotsay, Vizquel, etc., although maybe you start adding their numbers up cumulatively, it's enough to afford Damon/Matsui/Vlad The Impaler. All water under the bridge now, that ship has sailed. Andruw Jones has made Matsui, Thome and Vlad irrelevant. Call it luck or KW really believing in AJ. But the signing has been a total coup to this point.

The Teahen's D At Third thread
QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ May 6, 2010 -> 12:46 PM) Peavy, Konerko, and Rios are galaxies away from the type of player Teahen is. I really wish KW didn't sign him to that ridiculous extention, if he signed him to a $9 million contract where he was getting about 3 million per year or something like 2/3/4 each year, that would be much more easier to stomach. So that extra 1.7/2.5 million a year is just eating you up inside, huh?

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 6, 2010 -> 12:39 PM) You're right. They're a complete fluke and will be lucky to win 85 games this year. Didn't say that. But I'm not comparing them to a team that won 99 games then went 11-1 in October to win the World Series.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 6, 2010 -> 09:21 AM) Yeah but they're getting it done on a daily basis so far. Not too many people were overly impressed with the rotation of Buehrle, Garland, Conteras, and Garcia heading into the 2005 season. Did caufield hack into your account? You're trying a little too hard to pimp the Twins. Now you're using the 2005 White Sox as a source for comparison?

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 6, 2010 -> 03:31 AM) Sad that we can't get him, sad that Boras is representing more and more guys, or sad that we don't sign Boras guys? I can see not wanting to deal with free agents represented by Boras. Not so much draft picks. But I don't expect AR to make it to #13 anyway.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:57 PM) Soriano's stuff is way down this year, he's doing it with smoke and mirrors. Those 2002-2004 Twins teams started AJ, Mientkiewicz, Rivas, Guzman, Koskie, Stewart, Hunter and Jacque Jones, for the most part. There's no comparison with the offensive firepower (sure, they had a Gold Glover at every infield position...better overall speed) but this Twins' team just has a different feel. I'll reserve judgement for later whether they will be (or are) better than the 2006 Twins, probably the most talented of their division title teams up until this moment. This is the first time I've EVER seen the words "smoke and mirrors" used to describe Rafael Soriano. You either decided just to make something up or you've never seen the guy pitch. I have seen/heard the words "filthy," "nasty," and "electric" used to describe Soriano. His velocity is right on line with his norm this year. Soriano >> Rauch. And you would be saying the same thing if Soriano were a Twin.

2010 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (sircaffey @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:45 PM) Pretty impressive what he's accomplished over the past year as a 19-20 year old in the Fall League, ST, and now AA. Kid's hit like .380 over that span. All the meanwhile, developing physically (+20 lbs). Talk about prospect development. Almost too good to be true. Yup. You know what they say about blind squirrels and nuts. Looks like the Cubs might've actually found theirs.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:38 PM) If you can't be tolerable when you have Ken Griffey Jr. (especially) and Sweeney in your clubhouse, then you really are nuts. Can't even defend the guy. I hope Griffey calls it quits after this year. Nothing sadder then when a former great player sticks around 2-3 years longer than he should because he can't accept the fact he's done. Watching Griffey hit makes my eyes hurt. Watching him run? Yikes.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) Even you have to admit their team is structured in a completely different manner this year. This isn't the piranha team of the past. Offensively? You're right. They've got more firepower. But pitching dominates October. And I don't care what Rauch is doing right now. I would be scared out of my mind as a Twins fan if Rauch is called upon to protect a 1-run lead against offensive juggernauts like the Yankees and Rays.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) In the playoffs, rotation depth matters less. True. But they never won anything with a prime Santana. The Yankees and Rays would just counter with CC and Garza in game 1. Really no advantage for the Twins. But there would be a big disadvantage for them in their non-Liriano starts. The Twins don't lose in the first round every year by accident. They're just not really built for them.
