  1. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 2, 2010 -> 03:47 PM) 1B isn't easy to fill with a monster like Gonzalez, no position is. That's like saying that since SS is a harder position to fill with offensive talent, a player like Elvis Andrus is more important than someone like Prince Fielder. This logic is so faulty it's insane, yet people constantly repeat it over and over regarding Gonzalez. Agree that crippling the payroll is a bad thing, but let's spend our money on good players first and then see what happens. There was nothing wrong with the Rios claim because he has legitimate, 5-tool, All-Star type ability. There was nothing wrong with picking up Peavy for table scraps because, although he is struggling, he has been one of the best SP in baseball during his career, and he is young. Wasting money however on Mark Teahen and Juan Pierre - guaranteeing them money for no f***ing reason when they haven't proven s*** - is extremely hurtful. Imagine if we'd taken that extra cash and, if nothing else, added it an extension offer for Danks or Q, who actually have proven themselves here. But the point is, giving out a fat deal to Gonzalez presents a much smaller risk IMO, because the quality of player is so far superior it is not even funny. If Gonzalez were extended by us at a huge cost, then as long as we didn't give him a big NTC that kept him away from the big money teams, we'd still be able to dump his contract is we had to. OTOH, nobody is going to want that garbage Pierre and Teahen. Young talent makes people here stupid. It's one thing to make a s***ty trade and give up a young player for very little in return, and it's yet another to overrate the s*** out of everybody and start pulling back names when a franchise piece like Adrian Gonzalez is on the table. Everyone we have can go. I'll bet everything in this world that nobody in our entire system at any level, nor anybody who will be in our system for the next 5 years, will ever become as productive an offensive force as Adrian Gonzalez is right now. And as far as the pitching goes, lol. Yeah, right. Since when did we develop pitching? This coming from the same guy that had an aneurysm that lasted 2 months when the great Brandon Allen was traded. lol.
  2. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 2, 2010 -> 03:17 AM) Barring a horrid start today, Strasburg will move to AAA after his last AA outing. Bout time. Oh no! Strasburg gave up 3 ER today!? I wonder if they'll use this to foolishly keep him in AA for another start.
  3. QUOTE (CSF @ May 2, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) Hudson's line: 7 IP, 4 hits, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K's. That'll work. REALLY needed a performance like that.
  4. QUOTE (scotty22hotty @ May 2, 2010 -> 03:40 PM) Beckham is one of the best fielding 2b in the league... The Sox can live with his .220 average Its boneheads like Pierre, Teahen, and TCQ that cant field or hit right now that are killing this team This teams problem is that it has six 9th place batters The Sox have the worst offense and have one of the worst fielding teams in the AL while the Twins/Tigers are both at the top Um, no and no. And GB does not get a pass. He's been terrible so far.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 2, 2010 -> 03:22 PM) The good thing is that this counts the same as a 3-2 loss. And there is a good hockey game on NBC. That being said, it's time to start addressing some of the weaknesses and issues of the ballclub. Something has to be done with Gordon, whether it was what Sqwert was advocating in moving him down in the lineup, or sending him down to Charlotte for a spell. As far as I'm concerned, our 3-4-5 needs to be Andruw/Pauly/Rios. Q looks like he is starting to get a clue up there so hopefully he will start hitting for some kind of average soon. AJ is going to go through these spells, you just have to live with him. Teahan and Alexei are definitely a concern, as is Pierre. Going to have to try and do something to shake them up a bit. The SP has been extremely underwhelming outside of Danks and Freddy. But Floyd is a slow starter and hasn't been as bad as his numbers might seem to reflect. Peavy and Buehrle are both a mess right now. Hopefully Coop can get them straightened out. Bottom line though, we are still not far enough into the season to start making any long-term decisions, so we're just going to have to keep running them out there and hoping for some more W's until enough results have shaken themselves out to where we can start making some moves, whether for this season or going forward. Good post. I will say that if it comes to the point that GB has to be sent down to AAA that it's seriously time to re-evaluate how good he really is. I was worried about all the hype coming into the season.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) One of those insane Soriano hot streaks are taking place now. Cubs lineup is clicking, as there's some amazing batting averages being posted. Some amazing flukish batting averages. I'll go ahead and assume Theriot, Fukodome, Byrd and Soto won't hit .349, .347, .329 and .328, respectively. You're right about Soriano. He's on one of his little three week tears. Immediately to be followed by a month of suckage in which I have a better chance of hitting a breaking pitch than he does.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2010 -> 03:12 PM) Good for him, keep up the great season. Only improves his trade stock, and if this is his last year with the Sox, then I want him to go out in a positive light. Keep an eye on the Braves. They desperately need another bat, ideally a 1B. And their farm is oozing talent. Although I don't have much faith we could get much for 3 months of PK.
  8. Up the trade value, Paulie!
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2010 -> 11:38 AM) Can we try to keep this thread more about the trade rumor than bashing Cowley? Except there's no rumor to discuss. "One major-league scout said this week that the Sox and San Diego Padres had further discussions about Adrian Gonzalez and even discussed names." Yawn. You could say the same thing about half a dozen teams.
  10. Brad Lidge makes his presence known right away: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 HR And are the Mets legit? That's 10/11 for them. Rod Barajas is leading the team in HRs. They're getting outstanding SP. Ike Davis and Jenrry Mejia have performed admirably.
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 05:21 PM) Holy s***, 4-18. lol. 13 games out and it's not even May yet, I didn't even know that was possible. I couldn't have been more wrong. But I mean what do you expect when you got guys like Adam Jones, Nolan Reimold and Brian Roberts with Dewayne Wise-like offensive numbers? And Tejada being average, and Wieters being average? Most of those guys are supposed to be dominating right now, not looking like potential DFA candidates. I'm stunned. I certainly didn't expect them to contend for the division. But this is pathetic. Brian Matusz has been the lone bright spot so far.
  12. The DBacks 'pen might be worse than the Cubs. f*** it. It is worse.
  13. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 11:11 PM) Tampa is my 3rd favorite team (Rockies are my second) so I'm down with them. Maddon is one of my favorite managers in the game. I like Carl Crawford's assessment of his team. He calls them the Phoenix Suns of the MLB. Up tempo, run the hell out of people type. Jason Bartlett alone has more hits with RISP than I believe all 9 starters in our everyday lineup combined. And if I'm not mistaken, he is not even leading their team in that department. (though he might be now after hitting 2 more RBIs with RISP) You're just like me. I get a boner for teams that scout/draft/develop their own talent.
  14. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 10:10 PM) J4L, do you expect people who already have allegiances to other teams to just jump ship? I mean, they're a very new team and have done seemingly little to ever garner a fan base. The few people I could see rooting for a team like that are Tampa area residents that were born in the last 15 years or so. Also, what's up with Howell? Allegiances to other teams? Like who? The Marlins? That's right. They can't draw fans either. Despite the fact they've won two world series in their history. What exactly is the criteria for the great people of Florida to get up off their asses and support the local baseball teams? Outside of football, Florida is just a horrible sports state. And Howell has been on the DL all year due to shoulder problems. He should be back next month.
  15. If there was/is even a hint of interest in Washburn then they should've traded Hudson when they had the f***ing chance.
  16. Well they're certainly not THIS good. They're playing peak baseball right now. Clicking on all cylinders to the highest degree. They will come down some no matter what. But over the long haul, this is a legitimate WS contender. They've got basically every ingredient that you look for in a contending team. Starting pitching? Check. Balanced lineup with a combination of power and speed? Check. Bullpen? Check. And Howell hasn't even thrown a pitch for them yet. Overall team depth? Check. Who the f*** is John Jaso? And depth to me also means having guys in the minors you can call upon if needed. That's a check. The only things they lack is a real baseball stadium and real fans. The attendance totals for a team of this caliber is sickening.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 08:33 PM) They're obviously much more talented, but I hope this team doesn't crap out like the DBacks did in 2008 - they 21-9 in their first 30, and went 61-71 from that point on. Seriously doubtful. Although I would've said the same thing about that Arizona team. But the Rays legitimately go 5-deep rotation wise. Arizona had a pile of s*** after Webb/Haren. And their offensive core is better and more proven than Arizona's top guys were that year. And wasn't that the year they traded Valverde? That was a big loss right there.
  18. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 05:57 PM) With Pierre being a bust so far I have few things on my mind. With him not leading off which was clearly the reason why he was brought here in a first place, you have to ask yourself what does he bring to this ballclub? His defense is mediocre out there, no arm whatsoever. Question number 1: If Pierre is not batting leadoff would you want him out of the lineup and have Kotsay play LF and bat 9th? Kotsay, Rios, Jones, Q at DH, or you can rotate all these guys between these spots. Question number 2: With Sox still needing a big left handed bat, now that Pierre is failing do you see Sox trading for let's say Adam Dunn? He can play LF and brings the bat to the lineup. Conclusion if Pierre can't leadoff he is pretty much useless for this club and hurts you more than he helps. Prove me wrong. If you acquire Adam Dunn you do it to rotate him at 1B/DH. He has no business whatsoever in LF. None. Zip. Hell f***ing no.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 06:20 PM) Kyle Gibson threw a one hitter....looking like he will join Liriano in the next 3-4 months to form the most fearsome 1/2 punch at the top of rotation in the ALCD since Santana/Liriano in 2006. Your agenda wouldn't be anymore clearer then if you just came out and said "I live to suck off the Twins."
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 09:13 AM) The Rays may be the best team in baseball and are on pace to win 123 games, but their fans still don't give a s***. I know Oakland is not a popular team to see, but crowds of 10,825 & 10,691 for the two-game series are pretty awful. And they're at it again already. 5 runs with two outs in the second off Hochevar. And who the hell is this John Jaso? This guy is raking since Shoppach hit the DL. Make that 9-0 Rays and still batting in the third. This team is somethin' else.
  21. I'm really getting sick of Bobby's act. And I better not hear how he's 4/4 in saves.
  22. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Is Kelly Johnson legit? He didn't show that much power in the minors. He did hit 16 HRs with an OPS of .831 in 207. But besides that, nothing has ever suggested he has this kinda power. Out of his 24 hits, 18 of them have gone for extra bases. He was slugging .743 coming into today. If you have him in your league, enjoy it while it lasts.
