QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 07:03 PM) Given the time of year there really isnt much else to do. These unnecessary threads have spawned some of the best talk in PHT in quite some time. I understand that. It's just overkill at times to me. "Rangers make Michael Young available." Teams that could be interested: Braves, Phillies, Red Sox, Cubs, Marlins, Yankees, Astros, Twins, Indians, Angels, White Sox, Blue Jays, Orioles. And inevitably a thread titled "Could the Sox be interested in Michael Young?" would pop up. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 07:04 PM) Well, we can put it in a catch-all thread, but honestly, what else is there to discuss? Nothing much at the moment. I still don't think any rumor that has the name "White Sox" in it deserves its own thread. But that's just me. Not at all. But at least there's some substance behind it. Not somebody just throwing poop at the wall or trying to fill out an article. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) Well, we could always talk about how we shouldn't talk about things, that's always entertaining. Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. In fact, I want the board shutdown. I HATE TALKING ABOUT THINGS ON A MESSAGE BOARD!!!

I know this is a message board. But is it really necessary to start a thread about every White Sox "rumor", no matter how ridiculous, that pops up on the net or in the papers?

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 02:12 AM) Well, with my luck, whenever I go to a Sox-Indian's game something bad will happen now. Last time I was at a game where Alomar played, he fouled a ball off me, and a fat lady stole it. Robbing an 11 year old of a baseball = Not cool, not cool at all. But then I got Miguel Olivo to sign my hat, so it worked out. I would've clocked that fat b****.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 09:05 AM) I am. After years of high drafts picks and a few shrewd moves (who'd have thought Crawford would ever be a player that HELPS a team?) the Hawks are just flat out awesome. Combine that with the fact that Josh Smith has stopped chucking ill-advised shots and is playing within himself (and shooting nearly 60% in the process) and that team is just flat-out sick. Yup. I like them a lot. Crawford is much better suited for the 6th man role. Joe Johnson, IMO, is the third best SG in the league behind Kobe and Wade. Josh Smith just pretty much does everything (I remember thinking Tyrus Thomas would be this type of player). They're very athletic and have quite a bit of quality depth. I still think a healthy Boston is the best team in the east. But Atlanta is definitely going to be a team to deal with.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 18, 2009 -> 09:46 AM) I prefer winning actual World Series as opposed to the AAA championship. As do I. But for a team with a limited payroll, a team that's proven they will not bid on elite free agents, a team that has as many holes as we do, good luck fielding a team that can consistently get to the postseason without being able to develop their own talent.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 18, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) Alright, let’s throw out some more potential packages. Let’s get in-depth. How realistic is this? Is this too much? Trade Konerko and cash for Wood Hudson, Viciedo, Retherford, Wood, Shelby, Ely for Adrian Gonzalez. Are Shelby and Ely merely superfluous here? Can our system compensate for the loss of 4 of our top 15 prospects (according to Baseball Prospectus)? Would we be more comfotable swapping Morel in for Retherford or would that devastate our 3b depth? Personally, I think we could stand to lose these guys if it means getting Gonzalez. I just don't know how likely it would be. Basically, if we land AG, our farm is officially right back where it was in 2006. The good ol' days when Lance Broadway, Kyle McCullah, Ryan Sweeney and Charlie Haeger were like our 4 top prospects. Just saying people should think a little when they say "give the Padres whatever they want for AG. Even if it means our top 5 prospects." Be careful what you wish for.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 09:35 PM) By giving Joe Cowley this much attention in his email inbox, you guys are probably giving his ego some serious wood. There are bigger battles to fight than this guy. Yeah. I just logged on a couple minutes ago hoping there would be some new information on this 'proposed' 3-way deal. And I was excited to see there were like 100 new posts since the last time I had logged on. Of course, about 98% of those were Cowley related. Kinda disappointing.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 02:24 AM) A little something to add to the ISU-Illini debate. SIUE coach after playing ISU two days after they played Illinois. "“We fouled their bigs because we couldn’t contain them a lot. We got outmuscled inside,” said SIUE coach Lennox Forrester, a former Bradley and Evansville assistant. “I know Illinois is long and athletic (inside), but I thought Illinois State’s big guys were just as physical or even more physical than Illinois.” Yep 1% chance of ISU beating Illinois sounds about right. Um, OK? Who cares what Lennox Forrester (who the f*** is that anyway? Never heard of him in my life) says after playing both teams one time this damn early in the season? Nick Smith would seem physical to them compared to the competition they usually faced. And 1% is wrong. I'm thinking .001.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 06:34 AM) Yes, but who is? I'm not a huge Konerko fan either and I have more of an issue with his apparent leadership skills than anything else, so I won't cry too many tears if he's dealt. However, in the post steroid era there are not too many 40 hr, 110 rbi people around. Howard, Pujols, Morneau, Gonzales, Pujols, Cabrera, Fielder, Pena, Dunn, Teixeira. Those guys are all pretty much locks to match or come close to matching 40/110. Lance Berkman, although he had a down year in the HR/RBI department in 2009, is capable. Then you've got young studs like Kendry Morales and Joey Votto who are more than capable of at least coming close. I'd take all the guys I just named over PK in two shakes of a lambs tail. And I'm not hating on PK. He is what he is. But they're plenty who play his position that are considerably better.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 03:14 AM) Konerko is a nice hitter to have...hes good for .275/30/90 at this point in his career. He is no longer a 40 HR and 110+ RBI threat. The last 3 years he's averaged .260/27/80. So not too far off from your numbers. But his numbers figure to only decline as he gets older (they've already declined considerably since his 3 year peak of 2004-2006). Point is he's not worth 12 million as he's a third or fourth tier at best 1B. You're obviously not going to give him away. But if it makes sense, I'd have no problem at all if he's dealt.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 12:51 AM) No he didn't. In terms of 1B that had over 425 PA's, 28 players qualified. Konerko ranks 17th in BA 22 in OBP 17th in SLG 20th in OPS 14th in Hits 18th in 2B 13th in HR 16th in RBI He is making 12 million dollars in a bad economy, will be 34 when the season starts, and may soon overtake Benji as the slowest player in the major leagues. That is as simple as a breakdown as you can get. So make that he's not even a top 20 player at his position. PK at not a dollar more than half of what he's currently making would be just fine. 12? No.

Was watching the Ravens/Browns game. I know the Baltimore D is good. But the Browns owe me somethin'. I don't care what it is. I'll even take an apology. They have without question the most pathetic, deplorable, inept offense I've seen in some time. 5 offensive touchdowns in their last 15 games? I want those 3+ hours back.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 12:34 AM) Is Paulie really this bad a player compared to others at his position? I guess baseball is full of stud first baseman cause Paulie had a f***ing great year offensively. He also is a damn fine fielder. I realize he's aging. A lot of baseball teams don't mind paying a decent salary. I would think whomever gets Paulie will be a happy camper. He's far from a bad player. But we've seen his peak (2004-2006). He's no longer capable of putting up those kinds of numbers. And at his age, you figure that he's a pretty sure bet to only get worse from this point. He's not worth his current contract. And it's true, PK is probably not even a top 15 player at his position.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 12:12 AM) Exactly, if locking up AGon was out of the question, then I still go after him, but definitely don't gut the farm. The Padres won't (if they're smart) give two s***s if the Sox or any other team interested in Gonzalez is able to sign him to an extension. If they're giving up a player of that caliber on his current contract, which is just stupidly/insanely a bargain, they're going to demand a killing. As they should. I have no problem trading potential for proven. And that's a good thing. Otherwise I'd have to find another team to root for. But this philosophy we've adopted during the KW era (I.E. trading any prospect of value whenever you get the chance) has netted us a whopping two playoff births in 9 years. Yes, I know how 2005 ended. So please don't remind me (and when I say don't remind me I mean people in general. Not you specifically, Quinarvy). But 2/9, well, sucks. There's no way around it. We're not competing with the likes of Boston/NY every year. In fact, the only year the central has been regarded as the best division in baseball was 2006. And I know a pretty good percentage of the prospects we've dealt over the years hasn't really come back to haunt us. But the more and more you keep dealing these guys whenever they hit or almost hit peak value, the odds of some of these guys coming back to haunt us increases. If we had the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox's resources, I wouldn't really worry about it. Again, if we can sign Gonzalez past 2011, give them what it takes (although I'll definitely hate seeing Vicedo go).

ESPN Rookie of the Year Analysis
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) Meh. It's 83 innings. Andrew Bailey pitched 83 innings as the closer on a last f***ing place team. Talk about pressure! Porcello pitched 170 innings for a team that made it to a one-game playoff. Beckham played 927 innings out of position and was the most-respected among players. No offense Steve...but I think it's pretty silly to dismiss Bailey's fantastic rookie season simply because he's a closer (as if those guys aren't important), or that he was on a last place team. Outside of a select few (Rivera, Nathan, Broxton, ect), Bailey's overall numbers (ERA, BAA, WHIP) matches up well with just about any closer in the game.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 06:20 PM) Great piece from Gonzalez. Clearly these are the interesting aspects of the trade and it is important that we indicate we only are verifying the prelim discussions. Gonzalez breaks out the reasons the deal wouldn't happen, but he also points out the Padres interest in a SP, CF, C, and 2B. The Sox have 3 prospects that fill 3 of those needs and they happen to be our top 3 prospects. Bottom line, there is a lot of stuff in our system that would interest the Padres. The question is can the Sox take the risk and will they completely take a shot on Gonzalez putting them over the top for the next two years, because after that, it is highly unlikely the Sox brass would spend the necessary money to keep Gonzalez on the south-side. If KW is not damn near close to 100% sure he can lock Gonzalez up well past 2011, then I want no part of this. I'm sorry. Our farm is right back where it was in 2006 (dreadful and downright shameful) if we're able to trade for Gonzalez. I learned a long time ago never to get attached to any White Sox prospect as long as KW is GM. Because it's pretty much a lock they'll be traded. But if you're going to keep trading prospect after prospect after prospect (and I mean legitimate prospects), you better be sure the guy you're getting is going to be around for a number of years.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Nov 15, 2009 -> 11:04 PM) For what reason? I think he's the most overrated candidate of this years class. But he won 14 games! Honestly, if we're simply going by best rookie (regardless of position), it's got to be Andrew Bailey. He's in the top 6 or better in ERA, BAA and WHIP (for relievers). And I believe he converted his last 22 save opportunities. His K/9, BB/9, K/BB rates aren't too shabby, either.

Its funny I mentioned that a couple years ago he'd be overshadowed because of #23 and now he wants to change it in his FA year when New Jersey, New York, Miami and Chicago all have it retired? Go f*** yourself LeBron, the person.. but LeBron the player.... you can play here. Bulls and 76ers tonight should be a good game. Noah is making me excited to see him play. I won't go that far. Because quite frankly I don't know Lebron as a person overall. But he's definitely reaching jackass territory. It just shows you how unfair people (including myself) were towards Kobe.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 12, 2009 -> 12:40 AM) I agree. This team is much different then many including myself thought they'd be, especially defensively. Noah, Deng are basically having career years and Rose is still doing what he's doing not even 100% yet. No Gasol for the Lakers certainly hurts them even though they are still pretty deep. I expect it to be a very entertaining game, similar to the Nuggets game (though I don't think we'll see a Brad Miller non GW I'm banking). Ace, my brother, I expect more from you. Career years? Didn't the season start like 3 hours ago? I don't think any team has played 10 games yet. We are not in the same galaxy as the Lakers. Kobe alone makes this true. Doesn't mean we can't win. I think we beat the Shaq/Kobe Lakers in 2003 when they were 3-time defending champions. But Q used the word "showdown." A showdown occurs when two equal or near equal teams go at it. We're not even as good as the Atlanta Hawks. Let alone the Lakers.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 11, 2009 -> 11:41 PM) It's his goal as the agent to do whatever it takes to get his players the most money possible. To the naked eye, the raw numbers are comparable, though Jeter has the edge. Call it shady or unethical but he is good at his job and gets his players a lot of money, and he's rich as hell because of it. The average person knows Damon is better than Jeter, and that's why Damon isn't going to get $20 mill a year. He will get paid handsomely though, and that's all that matters to Boras. You mean isn't, right?
