  1. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) Every team has weaknesses, but I object to some of those complaints. Our offensive line is looking pretty damn good with the additions of Pace, Omiyale, Schaeffer, and Williams. Orlando Pace has missed 26 games in the last 3 years (although he did start 14 last year). He's 34 and past his prime now. People seem to be looking more at the name than the actual player. I don't feel too good about the chances of him staying healthy all season. Omiyale and Schaeffer (and a few Browns fans I know say Schaeffer is absolute garbage) are total unknowns at this point. Chris Williams is also an unknown. And he's going to have to adjust to a new position. The depth might look better compared to last year. But the line overall is a big ?. Stopping the run wasn't our problem last year. Generating a consistent pass-rush most definitely was. And when you have a secondary as bad as ours, that's a recipe for total disaster (I.E. last year). Unless you're name is Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzalez, I don't think it's a good thing when your TE is by far and away your top receiving threat. I really like Olsen and I think he's going to have a breakout year. But in today's NFL you have to have some form of vertical passing game to keep defenses honest. You can only go to your TE or dump it off to your RB so often. I'm not predicting 3-13 or anything. But this team has a lot of legitimate concerns. With that said, I'm f***ing aching for some football right now. I'm extremely excited.
  2. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 12:35 AM) The black Ryan Sweeney just barely squeaks another one over the wall. The black Ryan Sweeney also has 15 K's in 37 at-bats.
  3. Not that preseason predictions mean a damn thing (they're worthless. Especially in the NFL), but Peter King was either bored and just said to myself "Eh, I guess I'll just pick the Bears to win the NFC to shock some folks" or he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. This team has MAJOR questions marks at WR, O-line, D-line, secondary. I'm not sippin' the kool-aid that some are. The WR core is awful. I don't care what anybody says. Can Cutler make a difference? That remains to be seen. Can Orlando Pace not only stay healthy all year, but can he play at anything close to a pro-bowl level? Can Chris Williams hold down the RT spot? What will we get from a totally unproven Frank Omiyale? That's just on offense. Will our D-line, the same front D-line that was just a step above pathetic last year, rebound this year? Other than supposed D-line guru coach Rod Marinelli in the fold, why am I supposed to believe they will be that much, if at all, better? We've got crappy corners (Tillman is the only decent one when healthy) and safeties that can't cover anybody. I'm sorry. I'm not usually this pessimistic. But seeing is believing in this case.
  4. Where's the Dexter Carter and Aaron Poreda performance threads? Oh that's right. That wouldn't serve the obvious purpose here.
  5. We would've hit this mark 3 years ago had Jabroni not gotten banned. We might be celebrating 4 million posts by now.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:39 AM) And at the start of this extremely easy schedule, they went 3-3 at home against two bad teams, thats not gonna get er done. And they just lost to those rampaging Astros.
  7. Really starting to feel like a 'new era' of White Sox baseball is upon us. I doubt any of the guys mentioned get traded before the deadline tonight. But the writing is definitely on the wall for this off-season.
  8. 1995 and 2007. Those have been the two most pathetic White Sox seasons I've had to endure since I became a fan in 1991. I watched as many games as I could. Even when they were 20+ games out. I'll never understand the "I ain't watchin' this team anymore because they're playing like s***" garbage I hear around here. How is that any different from a token bandwagoner?
  9. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 02:33 PM) I don't know about Young and Zimmerman. Both made the All-Star team. I really like both Reynolds and Morales. True. But Freddy Sanchez made the all-star team a couple times I believe. Just sayin' these are guys who you've heard very little about all year (unless you're a diehard). Morales and Reynolds have come outta nowhere to have MVP-caliber seasons. And Josh Johnson should get some CY votes. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) BTW, Markakis is actually having kind of a down year. His OPS was around .900 last year. He didn't hit for great power earlier on this year. True. The power is down. But all his other numbers are really good. He's one of my favorite players. And when the O's start obliterating the AL in 2-3 years he'll have quite a bit to do with it.
  10. QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) Who is it on then.. When a team trades prospects for an expensive player who does not perform for the team its not going to come back to the GM who acquired him? Ive already said the players are number one, my logic is fine here you guys just don't read "Get players that perform." Your words, right? Well a guy like Peavy has performed and performed at a disgustingly high level. So if he sucks next year for whatever reason how again would it be on Kenny? Simply saying "Kenny brought him here" is pretty flawed and lazy. I'm not saying KW or any GM for that matter, even the really, really good ones, are above any kinda blame when something goes wrong. But I fail to see when proven guys with long histories of consistent production fail to get the job done that the blame somehow falls on the GM. Now if you want to blame KW, as some already have, for not doing more to upgrade the 2009 team before the season started, then fine. I don't agree. Even with that, this division was more than winnable. Detroit was beggin' us to make a move and we choked on a fat one.
  11. QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 03:53 AM) Dude that's why it IS on Kenny.. His job is to get players who perform, the players aren't performing (not living up to their potential) so how can it be on anyone else? This may just be a bad stretch right now, they may start performing. Thats why im not saying KW needs to go or anything.. however, if there was blame to be placed it should be on the person who CHOSE the players to be on this team that aren't getting the job done. Ozzie is only asked to make dinner, he doesn't get to shop for the ingredients. And its not like we are a small budget team that doesn't have the resources to build a contending team either. Your logic is pretty twisted. "Get players who perform." So if the players have a past success of quality performance before Kenny gets them and they start to under perform once Kenny does get them it's on Kenny? So if Peavy goes 5-15, 5.62 ERA next year that's on Kenny? I don't think so.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:57 AM) You did a nice job "skewing" this statistically by not including 2000, when we had 95 wins. So let's take out 2007, since, you're leaving out 2005 and 2000 coveniently. That gives you an average record of 88-74 over the decade...a record of sustained success we haven't had in, say, forever. In fact, if you go back all the way to 1990, and put together any long stretch of baseball from then until now, we're usually somewhere around 3rd or 4th in overall winning percentage as a franchise behind on the Yankees, Braves and Red Sox. I'd hardly describe that as being like the Pirates. Four division championships in a decade is certainly not like the Pirates, unless you go back to the Clemente-era Pirates, We Are Family Pirates or the Bonds/Bonilla/Leyland late 80's/early 90's Pirates. Maybe he was going back to when the KW era started? Fact of the matter is we've been to the playoffs a whopping 2 times in 9 years under KW. That's a s***ty ratio. And even KW would admit that. Who gives a s*** about winning percentage? How often do you get to October is all that matters. Please don't lump us in with the Yankees, Red Sox and those Braves teams that went on that ridiculous 14-year run. We're not even in the same galaxy as those franchises. Although I do think we're set up to go on an actual run. Edit: I reread your post and see your premise. Yes, we have been nowhere near as pathetic as the Pirates have.
  13. Basically, you come up with a list of 10 players (pitchers included) regardless of position having above average, or in some cases, outstanding seasons, that have gotten little to no national recognition (I.E. they don't play for the NY teams or the Red Sox). Here's my list from 10th best to best: 10: Nick Markakis - .305 BA, 41 2B, 16 HR, 89 RBI, .356 OBP, .479 SLG, .835 OPS 9: Aaron Hill - .285 BA, 31 HR, 85 RBI, .497 SLG 8: Jason Bartlett - .337 BA, .913 OPS 7: Michael Young - .326 BA, 35 2B, 22 HR, .908 OPS 6: Ryan Zimmerman - .299 BA, 27 HR, 90 RBI, .901 OPS 5: Huston Street - 33/34 save chances, 10.40 K/9, 2.25 B/9, 4.67 K/BB 4: Ubaldo Jiminez - 12-10, 3.33 ERA, 7.84 K/9, .230 BAA, 1.22 WHIP 3: Mark Reynolds - .280 BA, 40 HR, 90 RBI, .882 OPS 2: Kendry Morales - .311, 34 2B, 30 HR. 91 RBI, .948 OPS 1: Josh Johnson - 13-3, 3.04 ERA, 7.81 K/9, 2.15 BB/9, 3.63 K/BB, .235 BAA, 1.11 WHIP
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 01:52 PM) This Mets team is so unbelievably bad. The Cubs have an extremely easy schedule the next two weeks, so look for them to get back into the mix for the Wild Card. They've got about 75 million sittin' on the DL. And at what point will you stop predicting future Cub dominance? Extremely easy schedule? Did they not just lose 2/3 to the Nationals at home? 5 months is more than enough of a sample size to come to a reasonable conclusion about what you are as a team. And they're basically crap.
  15. Unless something crazy happens this last month, I think Greinke should be a lock to win it. He's clearly been the best pitcher in the AL from start to finish. Even when he was 'struggling' in the middle of the season he was still pitching better than the majority of pitchers in baseball. He's got a lot going against him, though. One, he only has 13 wins. It's a shame. He's gotten some of the crappiest run support in baseball, and the defense behind him is well below average. Two, he's not a Yankee or Red Sock. Which means less deserving guys like Sabathia or Beckett could steal the award.
  16. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 04:20 AM) Yes to all three. I was watching some games from 2005 via MLB.tv the other day. The games are usually archived around 1-2 hours after they finish. Thank you very much, Ozzieball. You were a big help.
  17. Ladies and gentlemen of Soxtalk. I'm not drunk yet (I'm getting close), but I'm officially buzzed. My question for my Soxtalk brothers and sisters (do any girls post on this site besides steff, who I worship, and that girl melissa 163545476?) Anyway, the question is would you poke this ---- I know I would.
  18. QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 02:00 AM) YOU said that he needed to accomplish more than Chad Pennington blah blah.. Then your reason was he needs to do it more than once to be considered along the lines of Peyton, Brees, and Brady.. but your entire logic here makes no sense when Brees and Brady only have one 100+ QB rating season in their careers as well.. And once again, if you would look at Bradys career season avg's they aren't any better than Rivers.. I haven't looked at Brees yet either but ide venture to guess the same would apply. I actually think Tom Brady is kinda overrated. I think he's a great QB and all. But when people put him in the same class as Montana/Elway/Marino, I want to behead something.
  19. QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 01:56 AM) Im out. Doesn't mean im not gonna keep following them, just means I have come to the realization that they prolly aren't good enough to take the central. Still hope they do though. I realized this at the end of July. However, I've never been more excited about the long-term prospects of this franchise since probably the early 1990's.
  20. For those that have ever subscribed, I want to know can you get archived games as well? Like if I want to go back and watch Mark Buehrle's perfect game can I do that? Also, can I get games from previous years as well? Any info would be very much appreciated.
  21. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 10:11 PM) Well he is one year removed from Tommy John. It's usually like this for any player yet alone a spect to struggle the following season. I would say next year we'll have a better idea on how to evaluate him, but he's got to get another good pitch somewhere as the slider he ditched (which also destroyed his arm) was his best pitch. Wow.. Viciedo.. He's come a long way. Can't wait to see how he does in the AFL. I know. I've factored that in. But we are talking low A ball here. I just expected a little more. But I agree that next year will be the year he proves whether he's a legitimate prospect or not. We're really short on SP in the system right now.
  22. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:49 PM) we do have some real good looking prospects, but do u think flowers, hudson, viciedo, etc will all be ready next yr? Flowers and Hudson could be. I don't want to see Dayan anywhere near the Sox next year. And by the way, when I said "prospects," I meant the direction the franchise was going in (I.E. setting themselves up for an extended run of success starting next season). Not actual prospects.
  23. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) Not a good start from Griffith; 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 2 HR, HBP. Very disappointing showing from him this year.
  24. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 09:38 PM) im not complaining about anything and i think kw has done a great job. and i know we have the money. im just saying that kw has to get a few guys. uch as u stated, a bullpen arm or 2, and of, maybe even a dh, a decent back up My bad. Sounded like you were. Yeah, this team certainly isn't complete. Not many are. But most would agree the long-term prospects for this franchise starting next year have never looked better.
