Who will win the second lefty reliever job?
QUOTE(rangercal @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 11:15 PM) I think Ozzies comments about munoz might wake him up. I was thinking the same thing. I'll take Munoz. God I can't wait until spring training.

Thome in the AL
QUOTE(kevin57 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 09:50 PM) For all the stats guys out there... Have NL players--especially the bigger stars like Thome--adjusted well to AL pitching and style of play? Is there usually some adjustment period? If so, we may have to be patient...not expecting him to hit 4 HRs during the first week of play. Let's just say Thome hit 52 hr's his last season in the al. Him adjusting to al pitching is the last thing I would worry about.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 06:57 PM) Yeah I think the Pistons are going to win this one too. The Lakers had it close for the longest time. Being down 9 points isn't terrible, but when you're going against the Pistons it's hard to overcome. Pistons up 14 now. Team play will ALWAYS outshine a one man show.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 06:49 PM) Think Kobe's going to score 50 tonight again? I'm guessing not but he's at 25 at half. One thing I'll say about Kobe this year, his jumper is straight butta right now. He's really worked on that the last couple years. His Jumper was broke as hell last year. The Pistons are still gonna win this game fairly easily.

Just finished reading an article about Al Harrington possiblly being a Bull next year. http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives..._missing_piece/ What's the love affair the Bulls have with Harrington? Seems they've been drooling over him for 3 years now. He's definitely a good player. But I sure as hell don't consider him the "missing piece".

The Replacements
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 11:09 AM) I have still seen nothing to tell me Hermanson will be 100% come Opening Day, which is a huge concern. Well, we haven't really heard anything bad, either. We won't know much until he starts throwing.

The Replacements
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 10:55 AM) I still think we need one more solid, proven arm in the pen, but we shall see. Plus, if that is the case, there are ALWAYS bullpen arms on the market in June and July. I agree. I'm just gonna wait and see what unfolds in spring training. I believe atleast one of Munoz, Reynoso, Bentz, ect can get the job done. Hermanson's health is also pivotal.

Phil Rogers
Let me see. Contreras Buehrle Garcia Garland Vazquez vs Zito Harden Haren Loaiza Blanton Well, it doesn't look as one sided when I match em up this way. However, I don't think Loaiza will come close to matching what he did last year. For one, he was in the nl. Two, that was a massive pitchers park he was in. I think you'll see his era well over 4. I still think you have to factor in B-mac. That's a luxury just about no other team has. Our rotation is clearly better.

The Replacements
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 07:53 AM) I looked around and didn't see much on this subject except for more individual comparisons. Here is the basic total of offensive and defensive stats that need to be replaced from 2005. Players lost: (Rowand, Harris, Everett, Thomas, Perez, Blum, Casanova): G – 495 (157 – Rowand) AB – 1573 (578 – Rowand) R – 190 (77 – Rowand) H – 392 (156 – Rowand) 2B – 62 (30 – Rowand) 3B – 9 (5 – Rowand) HR – 52 (23 – Everett) RBI – 208 (87 – Everett) TB – 628 (235 – Rowand) BB – 119 (42 – Everett) SO – 312 (116 – Rowand) SB – 32 (16 – Rowand) CS – 16 (5 – 2 players) OBP – .325 (.333 – Harris) SLG – .399 (.590 – Thomas) AVG - .249 (.270 – Rowand) Players that will fill these roles: (Thome, Anderson, Mackowiak, Ozuna, Borchard, Gload, Owens) 1573 AB, 52 HR, .249 BA, 32 SB, .325 OBP, .399 SLG, .724 OPS The combination of Rowand, Everett, and Thomas accounted for almost 1200 ABs, and the bench players accounted for almost 400 ABs. It is hard to imagine the new players hitting less than 52 HRs, batting .249, with OBP of .325. The only stats that would seem hard to match would be the 3Bs and SBs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pitchers lost: (Hernandez, Vizcaino, Marte, Takatsu): W-L 19-20 (6-5 - Vizcaino) ERA 4.63 (3.73 – Vizcaino) WHIP 1.52 (1.46 – Hernandez) G – 186 (66 – Marte) GS – 22 (22 – Hernandez) CG – 0 SHO – 0 SV – 13 (8 – Takatsu) SVO – 21 (9 – Takatsu) IP – 272.1 (128.1 – Hernandez) H – 286 (137 – Hernandez) R – 147 (77 – Hernandez) ER – 140 (73 – Hernandez) HR – 40 (18 – Hernandez) HBP – 17 (12 – Hernandez) BB – 128 (50 – Hernandez) K – 220 (91 – Hernandez) Pitchers that will fill these roles: (Vazquez, McCarthy, Bajenaru, TBD) 272 innings, 19-20 W-L, 4.63 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 128 BB, 220 K, 22 GS, 13 SV If Vazquez can give the Sox 200 IP, then there would only be a need for about 70-100 IP for the rest of the pitchers to pick up. The ERA and WHIP are not that spectatular, and Vazquez alone should be close to 200 K. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall, the collective numbers do not seem that hard to replace. This is also figuring the other players will produce close to the same numbers as in 2005. Looking really promising for 2006. I feel the only ? we have is in center. As long as Anderson can just match what Rowand did offensively ( I obviously would love him to do more ) we're fine. I'm pretty confident that he'll more than hold his own defensively. Besides that, we've upgraded everywhere else. I can't give Kenny enough credit for taking a 99 win team and World Series Champion and actually making it better.

Rooting Level For Frank Thomas?
I'll cheer louder than I ever have for Frank before the game. I'll hope he goes 0-4 with 4 strikeouts during the game. Then cheer just as loud for him when the game is over. I'll always love the big fella.

Did the Thome coverage spook you?
QUOTE(3E8 @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 01:06 AM) It's not abot forgetting how to hit, it's about hitting over 30 hr's anfd driving in 100 after TJ surgery. So you're basically saying King Kenny is an idiot? In Kenny, I trust.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 03:28 AM) Ben's pretty much a lock to re-sign with the Pistons for the max. And really if you were him, why would you want to leave that team the way they're playing at the moment. After that, it's really Nene, Mohammed, Cato, Battie and Pryzibilla. I've been endorsing Nene for a while now. If he's healthy, he's the guy we should go for.

Lumsden Health Update
QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Jan 26, 2006 -> 09:37 PM) i have a feeling that our farm system may have a better year than most expect. Lumsden looks to put up very decent numbers and the rookie-ball level of talent seems to be better than anticipated judging from the 05 draft topic. too bad we couldnt get danks.... It could be. A lot depends on how guys like Broadway and Liotta progress. Guys like Sweeney and Valido will have to improve as well. I'm looking forward to see what Lumsden does, though.

Dayn Perry's key players of 2006
We we're 11 in the al in runs scored last year. Even the Tampa freaking Devil Rays scored more runs than us. How the hell can you regress from that? Some of these writers make me wanna f***in barf.

I sorta like this trade for the Wolves. They get a decent big and some young talent back. I don't see what this really does for Boston. Does Kandi have an expiring contract?

Scot Gregor's Q & A with Kenny Williams
QUOTE(Shrunken Slugger @ Jan 26, 2006 -> 06:17 PM) I’m sure it won’t be as venomous as it’s been in past years. But I expect to encounter some resistance from Aaron Rowand fans and Frank Thomas fans and Willie Harris fans. Don't know why I think this is so funny. I think there's only one Willie Harris fan on the planet, and her name is Steff.

Scot Gregor's Q & A with Kenny Williams
This was mentioned in today's Herald, but is any gm currently in the game more cut-throat than Kenny? The guy is cold blooded. I f***in love it. We just won a title and it's like we haven't won s***. This dude wants it 10 times more in 06 than he did in 05. All Hail Kenny!

garland a fluke or not?
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2006 -> 09:44 PM) I just look at Garland and see: 1. A pitcher approaching his prime age 2. A pitcher with a low-mid 90's fastball 3. A very tall pitcher with an excellent sinker 4. A sinkerball pitcher with a dominating infield defense behind him 5. An excellent young talent who had a very good year last year and got himself playoff experience 6. A pitcher who is very comfortable with his catcher 7. A pitcher who has good confidence in his pitches at long last 8. A pitcher with guts And I think that every sign points to him being a dominant pitcher for a number of years to come. Out of those...the one that sells me the most is #7. When Garland and Buehrle came up in 00, you could see that he was just scared to go after people. It was obvious. Buehrle on the other hand came up and just went right after the guys. Garland finally started doing that last year and it worked. He could backslide, but I personally think he may be even better. He's got the makeup to be one of the best sinkerballers for a long, long time in this league. 100% agreed. People can take their Sabermatrics or whatever that s*** is and shove it up their ass. I'm not talking about anybody from this site by the way.

Frank Thomas signs with Oakland Athletics
I'm just glad he's not in our division. I wanted no part of possibly going against him 19 times. I don't care if he makes the A's tougher to beat. We've got to worry about the Twins and Indians a lot more than we do Oakland. I hope Frank dominates and has an mvp season.
