Sox officially hire coaches
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 03:58 PM) I understand the general doom and gloom entirely. The Sox's season next year will be a successful one if Adam Dunn, Jake Peavy, Alex Rios, and Gordon Beckham perform. After watching 0 of those guys perform last year, and all of them struggle or be injured for more than 1 of the previous 2 seasons, having success from all those guys seems like a long shot. I agree. But the doom and gloom seems to be amplified by the coaches that were hired. If Adam Dunn has another historically bad year, is it going to be Manto's fault? If Peavy still does not return to what he should be, will that be Cooper's or Ventura's fault? Now, if Alex Rios continues to loaf and doesn't end up with his ass on the bench, that WILL be Ventura's fault. People are already throwing themselves off of bridges, and it's early November. I personally would be more willing to run out in front of a speeding bus if Ozzie and Walker were still here.

Sox officially hire coaches
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 02:49 PM) Do we feel any better about the manager and coaching staff now that it's settled in? This is the first time in a long time I'm not in any hurry for the season to arrive. I don't see any scenario where we have an excellent team. I believe I'm in the minority here, but I'm excited about the season. I'm not overly concerned about the coaching staff right now because nothing has happened yet. I know, I know, lack of experience all around, but do we really think that this team will be worse just because Ozzie was replaced by Ventura, Walker was replaced by Manto, and Cox was replaced by McEwing? Really? 2011 was a miserable year, and two of the main reasons for that misery are gone. Hey, maybe on July 1st we'll be saying, "Oh my god, Robin is making worse decisions than Ozzie!" I doubt it, but if it happens I'll admit I was wrong. The general doom and gloom about 2012 already just baffles me. Let's wait until the season starts and see what these guys can do. I'm pretty damn confident they'll do a better job than the previous crew.

Is Jeff Manto this dumb
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 02:52 PM) I'd like to see our hitters bash line drives to the opposite field once in a while, but I've learned to not expect much of that. Our victory formula seems to be the long ball, so how bout a return of tons of home runs? Wouldn't we all love to see line drives and hitters using every part of the field? On paper, the Sox have a few guys that can hit the long ball, but the team cannot rely on those guys to drive in all the runs, so the "return of tons of home runs" will only get you so far. Walks are great because you get a guy on base. It's especially nice when you get the "dreaded lead off walk". But I saw too much of guys watching a close pitch go by thinking it was ball four. Then they have to flail at a bad pitch or they end up watching strike three. Swinging the bat can result in a guy getting on base or even making it to 2nd, 3rd, or even back home. Being aggressive and swinging the bat is something that is taught as early as pinto ball. Obviously when you're talking about MLB hitters they have to be aggressive and have a good eye. I'd rather see base hit after base hit then a walk and then a guy watching strike three because the pitcher has been a bit wild.

Sox officially hire coaches
I'm really taken aback over the vehemence of the arguments in here. It's been pretty well known since a few days after Ventura was hired who the coaching staff would be. I believe that the only logical thing to do at this point is wait and see. The arguments from those who abhore these hirings essentially have the Sox losing a ton of games. We can't make a true judgement of how these hirings will work out until the season starts. To say the Sox will have a horrendous year because they hired some coaches with little experience is premature.

LET'S MAKE A LIST OCTOBER '11 - FAVORITE SPORTS MOVIES
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:11 PM) I was 8 when it came out. It's a movie every person born from probably 1980 to now grew up cherishing. Ugh, I feel old. But to me The Sandlot speaks to anyone who grew up playing pick-up baseball games over the summer.

Sox officially hire coaches
Lots of crabby people today. I'm more of the mindset to wait and see what happens. On the surface, one has to wonder why the Sox went the way they did with the lack of experience. But we will not know how this will turn out until the season starts. And even then it'll be a while before we can really make a good judgement.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:47 AM) Wow, me too. And the same goes for Slap Shot. I'm trying to figure out what the top ones will be. Major League has to be up there. Even though Rookie Of The Year is about the Cubs, anybody around my age has to have it on their lists. Field of Dreams has got to close to the top.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:44 AM) Tell me about it. I already watch Dexter, The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire and the cartoon lineup on Fox. I'd like to watch Homeland, Hell On Wheels, and Boss (is that on Sunday or Friday, as I've heard both?). There's just too much good s*** right now. Speaking of, what the hell was up with that Family Guy episode?

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 04:41 AM) Good Luck to the people who enjoy The Walking Dead. Hope it keeps entertaining you. I think I am out. I gave it the first season and the first 3 episodes and it just hasn't pulled me in outside of that Herd scene in the premiere. Acting is awful and most of the characters are uninteresting. Time for me to see other people. I haven't watched last night's episode yet, but I think it's as good as last season. There's some more character development so far, and I like that. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I think the acting is pretty good.

The Futurists
Reminds me of one of those old cartoons about the houses of the future. It's funny, I wonder if in 2045 we could be reading a similar article written about how things will look in 2040.

I'm starting to catch up with Person of Interest. I thought the second episode was actually better than the pilot. Good stuff.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 27, 2011 -> 11:00 AM) It would've been a great theater release, and the fact that it was a TV movie makes it that much better. It was very well done for a made for TV movie.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) I'm enjoying the fact that no one is debating that BASEketball isn't a sport. BASEketball was at least about a sport...a messed up one, but a sport nonetheless. I agree about The Big Lebowski. Bowling was merely a backdrop. And just because they show poker on ESPN doesn't make it a sport. Pawn Stars in on the History Channel, and even though it's a great show there's nothing historical about it.

Six short years ago...
I remember watching the last out and being shocked. Not because of the close play, but because the Sox had just won the World Series. It took a bit for it to sink in. I recently showed my kids the DVD...they were 4, 3, and 9 months back then. Watching it, I felt that same excitement. Podsednik's walk-off HR, Blum's improbable 14th inning HR, Uribe's catch in the stands, and that last play...WOW.

I would say golf is a sport...more of a sport than bowling. But both require more skill than athletic ability. I associate fat guys and beer with bowling.

Frank Thomas: I could be the White Sox hitting coach.
I agree that the article is nothing more than Cowley going to Frank Thomas and asking him if he could be the hitting coach for the Sox. What's Frank going to say? "No, I'm not cut out to be a hitting coach. I'd rather market my own beer." It's like if someone came to me and asked if I think I could be the department manager? Duh.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 09:50 PM) I wasn't counting DeAza, but you are right, he looks good. I also did love Rowand but I try to not mention him cause people get mad at me when I praise the likes of Rowand/Wise/Garland/Dye. Rowand was a good center fielder for the Sox in 2005. Well, at what he lacked in skill he made up for with effort. The guy tried his ass off.

People watch Nascar to see the accidents. We're following Ozzie/Cowley because they are a perpetual disaster.
