    Job Hunt Thread

I think Im finally done where I work. One of my clients may hire me to be in house corp counsel (fingers crossed). Stupid law firm, you could have had me forever but you were too cheap.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 9, 2014 -> 02:34 PM) I wonder if what the NCAA/universities should do is basically say that to play college basketball you need to stay all four years instead of having four years of eligibility. If you want to go pro, fine, go pro if you can. If not, and some school offers you a scholarship, it's a 4 year commitment. No leaving early. It's then tied to the education/graduation and becomes more of an amateur sport. Right now a lot of the major players in college athletics dont want this. Scholarships are actually yearly. And it would be really difficult to structure.
  6. He was shaking at Mania, but damn that is just messed up.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 05:17 PM) One thing worth noting is that you didn't mention "health care coverage/long term care in the event of a major injury" which I would bet is probably more important to many of these guys than a salary. And that would be fine. I think that there could be some sort of set up where X% of revenues are set aside for health care.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 04:54 PM) The problem with this entire scenario is that you can turn the language around...I'm just not sure they really are just amateurs...and be completely accurate in that statement. I agree. I think that we should work to protect the kids. Things like guaranteed lifetime tuition/housing (1 degree) if you are a scholarship athlete. That way if you quit basketball/football you can always get a degree. Unlimited food, things like that, no problem. None of these kids should be coming out of pocket.
  9. I mean (imo) that is ultimately a benefit that really cant be valued. These guys are getting huge opportunities, not just on the football field, but in my life. Being in a major program connects you to alumni etc and many times can get you started on a career/path you would have otherwise had no opportunity to have. I may hate things like draft age limits etc, but Im just not sure they really are employees.
  10. QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 04:07 PM) So what's the ripple effect? Who will have money taken away from to pay players? Fewer scholarships? Cut non revenue sports? Will it kill athletics at smaller universities? You have to imagine that the end result is non revenue sports being completely stripped to bare bones. How many of those kids are going to lose scholarships? I have to imagine most of them. No reason to give swimmer A a scholarship if he may turn around and want more compensation. Unfortunately there is just no way to draw a line between basketball/football and other sports. If the ruling is based on the amount of hours/workload, it has no connection to revenue and therefore it really doesnt matter that the Qudditch team is making negative money, they are employees so now they have to be paid more than their scholarship. There was a point in time when unions/etc did really great things. But now many of them are just a manifestation of a different type of greed. No one even mentions that many of the "Northwestern Football Team" would not have been accepted into Northwestern if they weren't football players. How much value is there in getting a NU education versus a community college?
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 8, 2014 -> 03:55 PM) http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/col...singlePage=true Wow he noted that running a single sport is cheaper than running 20+ sports. Lets compare apples and apples: Basketball budgets: http://www.bbstate.com/info/teams-hoopsbudget 15 mil is top That is not even 25% of the NBA salary cap, let alone stadium costs etc. If anything that argument somewhat hurts them, because it shows for the most part college athletics are subsidized. Unless we are going to go with the "40 hour rule" and then a guy on band is an employee too, because well 40 hours is 40 hours right? It doesnt matter if its a CEO or janitor, 40 hours is 40 hours.
  12. I think the problem is the fight just seemingly wasnt brutal enough to beat Undertaker. When Taker lost I expected there to be blood, broken caskets, etc. It was just kind of odd.
  13. I kind of think Taker may be done. Lesnar looked terrible as well, there were a few moments when I wasnt sure that he could finish the match. And my friend thought he messed up the one lock to slam move so they had to redo it.
  14. The Undertaker thing was strange. I have to believe its what he wanted, because it just makes no sense for WWE to throw away a moment like that on Brock Lesnar. The rest was pretty same old same old, not really a fan of a forced triple threat match for a title. It also was just too predictable. Once Taker lost there was just no way Orton was winning. And the buildup for Cena/Wyatt was silly. We kept joking what could happen for us to forget about Cena's legacy, it was things like "he hits a kid in the crowd", etc. The only way any of that would have made sense was if they just made Cena go berserk and flip to heel through a DQ or something. Otherwise not really sure what the point was, Cena is a wrestler, now its out of character for him to beat people up? Expected a bit more for XXX.
  15. You win some, you lose some. Kentucky made the last 3, not a great shot, not a great shooter, but it went in. Maybe it doesnt 100 other times and Wisconsin wins that game. Besides for Brust/Bohannon, each of them will have another shot next year. Rough way to end, feel like that one was there for the taking.

    2014 TV thread

I think the ending of HIMYM was fine. Life isnt always what we expect.
  17. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 11:45 AM) Could be a good commercial with the Sox bullpen walking (in slow motion) towards an Old Country Buffet, and people looking out the window saying, "Oh s***." I think the better commercial is a picture of them walking away from a OCB with a sign on the door that says "closed"
