QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Non compete and non-solicitation are not allowed in California. The point is regardless of whether you find someone's pay large enough to live on, such as engineers, if their pay is being restricted either illegally or unfairly, it shouldn't matter that they make more than a typical student or employee. Thats not entirely true. CA allows for them if there are trade secrets involved. If you look at Apple/Google etc and all of the patent lawsuits, its pretty easy to cloak a non-compete as protecting trade secrets. IE Employee has information about potential patent of Apples, it is unfair for that employee to bring that knowledge to Google and potentially have Google beat Apple to the punch. Still an even simpler solution would be to move their corporate headquarters to another state that does not have a public policy rule against. These deals were only about the top guys, like COO etc. Either way its unnecessary to collude through back channels. Even worse, its unenforceable. Just flat out stupid. I still dont get how this applies to Northwestern or to unions. In the tech case you had CEOs explicitly trying to circumvent the US law, in the NU case there are no such allegations. NU student athletes somehow think being in a union will be better, Im just saying, Im not sure that they are really correct.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 10:11 AM) Again, I think this is inaccurate. Recently we found out that dozens of tech companies basically organized a cartel to not steal eachothers managers and developers because wages were getting too high and cutting into profits. Software developers and engineers make great money! Their income was going up in those years! But the fact is their wages were deliberately being kept lower than they should have been in ways that was not affecting the CEO pay or bonus structure - which was being set by the market. Recently we found out that tech companies are really stupid and dont have attorneys, because you could have legally done what they wanted by putting a restrictive covenant into the employee agreement. Non-compete, non-solicitation, are allowable. Not sure what this has to do with unionization.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 08:12 AM) Yeah, man, that's a killer duo in 2003. Says the guy who likes Frank Turner? Outkast is arguably one of the top rap groups of all time, likely the top southern rap group of all time and when you listen to Aquimeni/Stankonia/etc you realize just how far in front of the music they were. I am actually seeing them twice this year (Summerfest/Lolla) and we had considered going to Coachella just to see them. Last year only had NIN as a good headliner. This year has Outkast and Eminem. Completely happy to pay $250 to see only those 2. Add in Nas (who I saw last year) plus Chance the Rapper and you have some pretty solid rap acts. Last year there was only Kendrick. Outkast is going to be ridiculous, I hope they play Chonkyfire.

Makes it so there are less times that the ref has to determine if the ball was inside or outside upright. -

I think most people believe it would be very odd for Shaka to take the MU job. Hes from Madison (not Milwaukee), so not a real great connection. I dont want him there, but I cant imagine anyone in any world taking the MU job over UCLA, let alone Illinois. -

Disagree. California + Money= win If Howland can do damage at UCLA, Shaka could have too. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 11:43 AM) Nate Silver has found that preseason rankings a surprisingly good indicator of tournament success. The 2011 Butler team isn't nearly as good as the 2014 Kentucky team. That 2011 team didn't have Heyward. Wichita State was ranked 16 in pre-season. So does that mean they were overrated as a #1? Either way, you need to beat good teams to win a championship. Correct me if Im wrong, but Wichita State never beat a top 25 rpi team.

Plenty of teams seeded 5-8 could have beaten Wichita State. Plenty of teams beat Kentucky. Had they played in a stronger schedule I think theyd have lost 5-10 games.

Feel similar. If you get McDermott in the mid first you probably are fine with it. -
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 12:15 PM) Shaw is hot... Are you including Root in that? I mean Shaw is hotter than Root, but Root has that insane intelligence quality that I enjoy.

That crowd seemed a little better than an average Kohl Center one. Sometimes when Wisconsin gets down the Kohl Center can get quiet. Wisconsin has more talent than I think they get credit for.

When Payne is good they are really tough to beat.

This bastard attorney filed a motion thats up at 2pm. So I had to send him an email yesterday saying that something came up and I may be a few minutes late. RESPECT THE GAME

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) I miss the overreaction, sliding scale SB post. Thanks. You mean hyperbole to create a reaction about the absurdity of the law. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 05:24 PM) Not for nothing, as I know you simply used this as an example, but Turkey contains less L-tryptophan than cheddar cheese, and about the same as chicken. The amount of turkey you'd have to eat to produce this effect is more than most would actually eat, even on Thanksgiving, and those to do eat that much would have to do so on an empty stomach WITHOUT eating anything but the turkey. Mixed with other amino acids, the sleep effect produced by L-tryptophan is negated. One time I ate a turkey and it made me sleepy, I almost fell asleep while driving. We should ban turkey. Thats the type of anecdotal evidence that was used to make marijuana illegal in the first place. Which is kind of the point, if you repeat something enough times, people start to believe it.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 04:54 PM) I'd imagine the argument is eating something unhealthy doesn't increase the risk of harm to other people like drugs do, be it from drug crimes or from being high while driving a car. It could increase the risk. How many people have been killed in car accidents due to another party having a heart attack? What about eating turkey and falling asleep at the wheel? What if I ingest to much sugar and go into a coma? And "drug crimes", what about "food crimes", when someone steals so that they can eat. Should we ban food? What about money crimes, someone steals money/kills for wealth? Should we outlaw money? This is merely about government control. Its not even like guns where the gun itself can kill. Its not like "Oh s*** I accidentally hit that bong and someone died." There is no direct causation to other people. Drugs are just a convenient excuse for when people make bad decisions. Its just an excuse. There is only 1 drug that I have ever taken where I seriously could not comprehend the consequences of my actions, its hilariously alcohol. So there is no rhyme or reason, because alcohol is basically the most dangerous. Not only to you, but to others.
-
Its interesting to look at the law historically to try and find when exactly people gave up the right to ingest whatever they want. I doubt what I do is healthy, but who exactly is the US govt to tell me not to? People can eat bad food, they can drink things that kill them, so why do we arbitrarily draw the line. Crazy to say it, but there are likely more deaths attributed to drinking too much water in a single day than smoking too much weed in a single day.

QUOTE (juddling @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 04:04 AM) I don't know how many people have been watching since the beginning but Person of Interest and their overarching plotlines have been wonderfully written and executed. To me this is the best serial show on tv....... Yep, one of my favorite shows on tv. Doesnt hurt that the 2 main females are hot brunettes.

Yeah I think I left out a word when I was typing.

That is why I said or part of Russia... implying that if part of Russia says it wants to be independent and has a vote, would Putin recognize it?
-
What is odd is that not even Russia really wants to set this precedent. If they allow Crimea to just secede, then what stops part of China from voting itself a new country or a part of Russia...

QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 11, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) Hah...$6 for PBR! Honestly, who knows where we'll end up...I just sort of need a starting point with some decent options and then where we end up is really going to be a function of who/what we encounter along the way! Unless you really want to go to Wrigleyville or Lincoln Park, Id probably say Old Town. It has a decent mix of some dive(ier) (OTP) bars and some classier ones. Its also pretty centrally located in terms of River North/Lincoln Park/Whateverhipstervilleiscalled Also Second City etc is there so its actually not bad. Except it can get extremely douche.
