At at a 2004 salary of just over $1 million, I would have preferred him over Jose. And what good is range and a strong arm if you can't catch it and throw it to the right place? Oh, and so far, Tony has 1 error, Jose has 10!!!!!!
  2. We also know how dangerous he is when he throws the ball to first. That is, assuming he can field it cleanly. All this talk about how he can/can't hit lefties, what about his crappy fielding? and throwing? I would much rather have had Graffanino there, at 1/3 the cost, than Jose. Since when does 'clubhouse leader' show in the game stats? Strikeouts and errors do. :headshake
  3. Yeah, I am sure that they do make speeches and such, and am equally as sure that they will tend to be heavily political. However, if they were asked to give the commencement speech at UIC, or Michigan State, and spoke with the same type of slant as he did, you would never hear the end of it. Speaking at the Young Republicans convention is different than speaking at graduation ceremonies. I don't deny Doctorow his right to have whatever views he wants, but in some places, it is inappropriate to discuss them. By the way, Happy birthday! Now you are as old as me, for about 2 months! Enjoy!
  4. Technically that rule is in place, isn't it? They tell you at the beginning of the game that throwing things onto the field will get you ejected, as well as running onto the field, etc. They throw it back, they get thrown out. I agree, throw them out! A few years back we had a guy in the seat next to me (but across the isle) got a HR ball from someone on the Twins. This guy was excited, and a bunch of morons around me kept telling the guy to throw it back, and gave him alot of crap when he didn't. One idiot even threw his beer at him , and missed, hitting some kids 2 seats over. Security thankfully escorted that jerk out. But an inning later, security came and got the guy who caught the ball. Seems it was the first career HR ever for the Twin guy, and he wanted to trade for the ball. The guy came back a few innings later with a bat signed by several of the Twins players, including Hunter and Jones. If you are a baseball fan, that would still be nice to have. A much better memory than throwing a ball back on the field.
  5. I agree. Had the commencement message been of a conservative nature, I doubt that the faculty would have just sat by. It is telling that the people who gave him an ovation were the FACULTY and SOME students. And it didn't say that they applauded HIM, but applauded after the President asked people to calm down. Rabinowitz approached the podium and called for calm. "We value open discussion and debate," he said. "For the sake of your graduates, please let him finish." What discussion? What debate? The asshole had a captive audience to hear his ranting about his political views. As stated later in the article, "he violated the unwritten code that college commencement speeches should inspire and unite a student body." ...said sociology professor Cynthia Bogard. "I only wish their parents had provided them a better role model." What would she have liked them to do? SHow them how to sit still and let someone try an shove their viewpoint in your face during a forum that called for a little more class and decorum? All that crap about the speakers having a right to his opinion is just that, crap. He has a right to his opinion, but not to share it with people who don't want to hear it. Man, could you imagine how crazy the various media outlets would be going if this had been Sean Hannity (or someone way out there, like Ann Coulter!) speaking, and they had got booed while criticizing Kerry? This would be front page stuff for a week! Or more! There would be cries of outrage from the Kerry camp, demands for resignations, apologies, etc. Not to mention the 3 or 4 days of monolog material for Letterman. Oh, and I bet the Air America people would have been wetting their pants in glee. People can have their views, but there is a time and place to let everyone else know them. That ceremony was not one of them.
  6. As he should have been! That was not a place for the guy to offer up his political views to a captive audience. From the article, "Bill Schmidt, 51, of North Bellmore, shared the outrage. "To ruin my daughter's graduation with politics is pathetic," the retired New York Police Department captain said" That line says it all.
  7. Ford has a hybrid version of the Escape due out soon, but with a limited production. I think I read that they were only going to make 10,000 units, but have recieved enough interest (names on waiting lists to buy!) to build 3 times that many.
  8. In 1971 thru 1974, Wilbur Wood averaged over 340 innings pitched. I believe he even started both games of a double header for the Sox.
  9. "If only U.S. Cellular Field was as memorable as revered Wrigley Field." I don't revere Wrigley field, do you?
  10. Oh yeah, I forgot that one. I got that one directed at me a few times.
  11. Just an SUV observation. I have one, and am not dissing them, but why is it that over half the full-size SUV's I see every day (Expeditions, Tahoes, etc) have little women driving them. I mean LITTLE, as in short, and weighing maybe 120lbs soaking wet. Weren't these the same women who 10-15 years ago wouldn't be caught dead driving a station wagon? And why do they need super high clearance and 4WD? When it snows, they stay home! Off-roading? YEah, right. Safety? Try a Volvo instead. I have mine because I make deliveries in it for my work, and my customers don't care if there is snow on the ground or not. I also have a 4 cylander mini van for the warmer weather, because I also don't like $2+/gallon gas.
  12. Corg is one of the reasons I came here instead. He is an as who suffers from delusions of grandure. Heaven forbid you state an opinion that he disagrees with, then he slams you with one of his once witty retorts. He stalks posters he doesn't like, claims to know all, and has a very abrasive attitude. His post counts get so high because of his very thoughtful replies such as 'Baloney!' and 'Reading comprehension is a skill, learn it.'. I think that he himself makes up half the so-called trolls that follow him around so he can have all the attention. I came here to get away from internet 'bullies' like him and have reasonable discussion and discourse. As for Mags being 'dissed' by the Sox offer, when will players realize that money doesn't equal respect. If he takes 15 mil a year to play with the Yank-mes, does he think people will respect him more? He has been offered good money, to play on a good team, with people he supposedly likes and in a city he supposedly likes. Where's the love? If he signs with the Sox, Corg will say it was because Reinsdorf and/or Einhorn made the deal happen. If he doesn't, it is all KW's fault.
  13. Which ended up leaving the wolves guarding the henhouse. However, it would probably make a good ducumentary, don't you think? Maybe Michael can help us out and show us what really went on there.
  14. One thing to note, the last few years, after the disasterous first inning, the Sox would have folded (against the Twins). Today, they looked pissed, which is GREAT! They came back, made it 3 out of 4, and for at least tonight, all is well.
  15. Kinda makes you wonder what dumbass thought that taking a picture posing with a prisoner was a good idea at the time.
  16. When Michael Moore foots the bill for his 'documentaries' HIMSELF, he can determine when they get released. As long as a studio pays the way, THEY own the film. Note: "He has alleged the White House has brought pressure to bear to stop the movie from being seen in US cinemas before voters go to the polls." Yeah, that's right. NO PROOF. But all he has to do is open his yap and say it, and it hits the papers as gospel. Note: "Disney, the parent group of the film's production company, Miramax, has refused to distribute the film, prompting Mr Moore and his backers to search for a new deal." Disney is on record as saying they were exploring one of their smaller studios for the release, even letting Moore know this during shooting. All the while, he acts like this is some big suprise thrown at him by the big, bad corporate giant. He should be carefull, if he bites that hand too hard, that will be one less studio to 'feed' him. He might actually have to work. Note: "Moral victory... Moore takes the top gong in Cannes" Moral victory? Did anyone have a doubt that it would win? Let's see. He is a liberal, the movie is anti-Bush, the judges are also liberal and anti-Bush. Hmmmm. Yeah, I bet the vote was a close one. Maybe he could do a documentary on the UN oil-for-food program, and how that was the biggest reason for all the starvation in Iraq pre-invasion, while the French, Germans and UN leadership themselves all looked the other way and enriched themselves, while the very people they professed to want to help, starved before the world's eyes. I bet he doesn't have enough balls to do that one. No Republicans involved.
  17. Garcia is NOT worth 3 prospects. You over-value Garcia, and undervalue the Sox prospects. Maybe 2 prospects, MAYBE, but not three.
  18. Every time I read these trade posts, I realize that most of the Sox fans here posting are the opposite of Cubs fans when it comes to trade value. Cubs fans seem to think their worthless scrub players are wanted by all and can be traded straight up for a team's #1 starter or hitter (ie. Juan Cruz for ). Most of the people I see here seem to undervalue the Sox players values in trades (ie, say Perez for Borchard, Honel and Konerko). Lee has trade value. Just because some of you here think he sucks, doesn't mean he is without trade value. And other teams that have good pitchers to trade may not be dealing from positions of power, so won't be able to ask for the moon. If Arizona could get rid of Johnson's albatros of a contract, and still get something in return, they would probably do it. But not 3 or 4 players/prospects in return. And with the way the Sox offense usually puts up numbers, Garcia would be an excellent fit. He beats anything else we have had in the #5 slot, or whichever number you move him to. If it costs Lee, that would be OK. You have to give something to get something. But I don't see it costing anything more than Lee. And BrandoFan, why can't Buehrle be that #1 guy? Who would have thought that ANY of the Florida pitchers would have done what they did last year. C'mon, did you, or anyone other than a Marlins fan, really think they could have done what they did? Get us to the playoffs, and the guys we got now can do fine. But we need to GET there first.
  19. Yeah, depending on how large an area the votes come from, things could be ok. That would be something to be considered if it were to ever become a reality. Too small of an area could be bad.
  20. They should throw it out since she knew the condition before she 'married' her. This case should never see the inside of a court room. Sounds like a shakedown to me.
  21. By voting in judges, you will also leave things open for the possability of mob rule. Say you have a shooting in a minority neighborhood. The shooter is a whiter cop, the victim a black man. Tensions are already high in the neighborhood, and the local clergey and leaders are calling for the head of the cop. But it turns out, the cop did the right thing. He was shot at first, or something. The judge lets him go, the crowd gets pissed at the judge, and votes him out when his term is up. The judge followed the law, and loses, because the 'mob' didn't like his vote. I am all for not having judges serving life terms, but maybe very long terms, say 10-15 years. Then they don't have to be afraid that every verdict they make will cost them their job in the next year. Or maybe make them 20 year terms, with no renewal, then reelection isn't a concern at all. You are right about the biggest hinderance being the judicial branch. All too often, judges of both parties let their personal feelings, connections, etc. get in the way of following the letter of the law. The judicial branch is supposed to interpret the law and judges accordingly, not legislate from the bench. And on another note, since we do elect judges in Illinois (well, some of them), does anyone know if/when 'letem go' Leo Holt is up for retention? I think all Sox fans should make it a point to get him removed, regardless of which district he is in, for his handling of the Liguie case.
  22. The quote you heard was about a basketball coach. I heard it last night on ESPN when they were talking about the guy coaching Indiana wanting revenge against 'his' old team, Detroit. The problem with the poll is that the manager doesn't influence the winning of games as much as he can lose them. A good manager might win you 6 or 7 games a year, but a bad one can lose you 2 to 3 times that many.
  23. Even if he came back faster, I don't think they would be removing Ford from the lineup. He is a good player.
  24. But if you ask him, or some of his more agressive supporters, they will say that the new worth is not his, but his wife's. They will site a prenup, and the fact that they filed seperate returns as their evidence. I think that is a load of crap. That is the same reasoning he uses to defend his owning SUV's, but yet to criticize people owning SUV's. They are not 'his', but belong to his 'family'.
  25. Maybe I'll get lines this time! Family guy rocks!
