Under Siege Shoulda/Coulda been Wrigley field...... It has lost its landmark status and hosted many a Chicago Bears disappointment, but the latest indignity to befall Soldier Field might just rock the 85-year-old stadium to its foundation. Yes, that's Soldier Field -- being destroyed during a Bears game in the new Marvel comic book "Siege." (Marvel) A comic book miniseries called Siege starts off with a bang with its first issue on Jan. 6 when a group of villains levels the iconic Chicago structure in hopes of framing a few heroes. Brian Michael Bendis, writer of the four-issue Marvel series, calls Chicago the “most American city” and knew he wanted to center the horrific events there. Soldier Field wasn’t the first Chicago landmark he had his eye on, though. “My first choice was to blow up Wrigley Field,” he says. “[Marvel Comics Editor in Chief] Joe Quesada is so in love with baseball, he couldn’t imagine blowing it up.” After years of superhero infighting and even a civil war that pitted Captain America and Spider-Man against Iron Man and others, Bendis says Siege is set to lay the groundwork of a reunion of sorts. “I’m not the biggest sports guy and I meant no disrespect to sports fans, but we needed something so horrendous to happen for them to be united again,” he says. “Hopefully, this will ring in a new day for Marvel readers.” The explosion actually happens during a Bears game with a handful of players on the field; the fate of the coaching staff is unknown. “I heard from numerous Chicago fans who told me they were glad I put the team out of its misery,” he says. Bendis is currently consulting on the big-budget superhero team film “Avengers,” due in either 2012 or 2013. While he was tight-lipped on future Siege storylines, he did say that some of Marvel’s most recognizable heroes will make a Windy City appearance during the four-issue run. “We’ve blown up a stadium,” he said. “Respect will be paid.”

Problem with the Cole character is that the same character was on Scrubs a few years ago as one of Eliot's students. You know.....rich kid....daddy donated big money so he was entitled. it was only good once Kelso told Eliot that he had to suck up to the kids father not to the student and then she rode his butt hard. I don't see Cole going away but i don't see him getting any better either. ...and i'm still wondering how and when (of if) they will work in Ted and Lloyd...lol

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 10:58 PM) I thought it was sort of boring, but it's one of those necessary boring episodes which sets up the rest of the season. wow...i'm surprised you could call that a boring episode. it wasn't a lot of gunplay or anything but i would say that episode was far from boring. Ranging from Lots of stuff happened and even more is in store for next week. One thing i did notice that i wonder if it was on purpose was I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Well....seems a blind gamer is suing Sony for not making disabled-friendly games. Right now I'd like to copyright the game title 'Braille Hero'!!!! A sight-impaired gamer is taking various branches of Sony to court for failing to make their games accessible enough to disabled gamers. Alexander Stern filed his suit in California at the end of last month. He claims that Sony Entertainment and Sony Corporation of America is failing to do enough to follow the US Disability Act by not making its games more accessible to disabled gamers. Stern alleges that Sony ignored repeated requests by email and post to make features of its games more accessible. The suit apparently focuses on massive multiplayer online games. The suit mentions the third party add-ons which are available for titles like World of Warcraft to make the games easier for visually-impaired users, Gamerspotterreports. The suit is also claiming financial loss - Sony runs auction sites for certain games where you can sell your game character's silver battle axe for real world money. The legal approach is getting a mixed reception in disabled gamer forums. AbleGamers said the voluntary approach to improving accessibility was working and options could be added which the non-disabled gamer would never even be aware of. But the group said it was worried the lawsuit approach would do little to promote the cause or the community of disabled gamers. link

I guess this guy was on the radar of a couple of our agencies as he was trying to make contact with al Qaeda. But we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by bringing up the possibility of him being a terrorist. Link

Rich guy dislikes poor people, wants local kids to "lose sleep" over plan to shut library Constantine "Connie" Xinos is the president of the home-owners' association in a gated community in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook. He dislikes being near poor people (he successfully blocked a permit for a senior's home, stating, "I don't want to live next to poor people. I don't want poor people in my town"). He reportedly worked to elect an Oak Brook village council who would shut down the town library, which he also campaigned against. When local kids showed up at town meetings to ask that their library be left open, he is quoted as saying, "I don't care that you guys miss the librarian, and she was nice, and she helped you find books;" and to the library staff to "stop whining." The librarians are now attempting to unionize under the Teamsters. Sydney was upset and "her little friend was in tears" after Xinos spoke at the meeting last week, says mom Hope Sabbagha. "I wanted that kid to lose sleep that night," a grinning Xinos says Wednesday, as he invites me for a nearly two-hour interview in his Mercedes-Benz in the gated Oak Brook community where he lives. "This is the real world and the lesson, you folks who brought your kids here, is if you want something, pay for it..." A poor kid who grew up in Berwyn and worked in his dad's cafeteria in Chicago, Xinos went to law school and served in the Marines. Xinos says he speaks for Oak Brook's view of the Teamsters when he says, "Nobody here likes those kind of people." Xinos, who says he never had children in part because he wasn't sure he'd be able to support them, sprinkles the F-word throughout his conversations. He dismisses a recent library event involving dogs with a blunt three-word rant in which he bookends swear words around the word "that." Link

For various reasons, disgraced NBA ref Tim Donaghy’s tell-all book about his antics in the League has been canceled by the book’s publisher. “Blowing the Whistle: The Culture of Fraud in the NBA” was supposed to drop later this month, covering Donaghy’s experience in the NBA and the events leading up to his conviction on federal wire fraud charges. The official cancellation didn’t hit though until some explosive excerpts were released to some media outlets including Deadspin.com. The clips Deadspin posted from Donaghy’s book are jaw-dropping. We’re not taking sides here, we’re just passing some of them along … Donaghy on “star treatment” for certain players: If Kobe Bryant had two fouls in the first or second quarter and went to the bench, one referee would tell the other two, “Kobe’s got two fouls. Let’s make sure that if we call a foul on him, it’s an obvious foul, because otherwise he’s gonna go back to the bench. If he is involved in a play where a foul is called, give the foul to another player.” Similarly, when games got physically rough, we would huddle up and agree to tighten the game up. So we started calling fouls on guys who didn’t really matter-”ticky-tack” or “touch” fouls where one player just touched another but didn’t really impede his progress. Under regular circumstances these wouldn’t be fouls, but after a skirmish we wanted to regain control. We would never call these types of fouls on superstars, just on the average players who didn’t have star status. It was important to keep the stars on the floor. Donaghy on how easily refs are influenced by “favorite” players: Allen Iverson provides a good example of a player who generated strong reaction, both positive and negative, within the corps of NBA referees. For instance, veteran referee Steve Javie hated Allen Iverson and was loathe [sic] to give him a favorable call. If Javie was on the court when Iverson was playing, I would always bet on the other team to win or at least cover the spread. No matter how many times Iverson hit the floor, he rarely saw the foul line. By contrast, referee Joe Crawford had a grandson who idolized Iverson. I once saw Crawford bring the boy out of the stands and onto the floor during warm-ups to meet the superstar. Iverson and Crawford’s grandson were standing there, shaking hands, smiling, talking about all kinds of things. If Joe Crawford was on the court, I was pretty sure Iverson’s team would win or at least cover the spread. Donaghy on Dick Bavetta: Two weeks before the 2003–04 season ended, Bavetta and I were assigned to officiate a game in Oakland. That afternoon before the tip-off, we were discussing an upcoming game on our schedule. It was the last regular-season game we were scheduled to work, pitting Denver against San Antonio. Denver had lost a game a few weeks prior because of a mistake made by the referees, a loss that could be the difference between them making or missing the playoffs. Bavetta told me Denver needed the win and that it would look bad for the staff and the league if the Nuggets missed the playoffs by one game. There were still a few games left on the schedule before the end of the season, and the standings could potentially change. But on that day in Oakland, Bavetta looked at me and casually stated, “Denver will win if they need the game. That’s why I’m on it.” I was thinking, How is Denver going to win on the road in San Antonio? At the time, the Spurs were arguably the best team in the league. Bavetta answered my question before it was asked. “Duncan will be on the bench with three fouls within the first five minutes of the game,” he calmly stated. Bavetta went on to inform me that it wasn’t the first time the NBA assigned him to a game for a specific purpose. He cited examples, including the 1993 playoff series when he put New Jersey guard Drazen Petrovic on the bench with quick fouls to help Cleveland beat the Nets. He also spoke openly about the 2002 Los Angeles–Sacramento series and called himself the NBA’s “go-to guy.” Link also more excerpts over here at Deadspin Interesting reading.....not sure whether to believe it or not but with some of the crazy refereeing in the NBA over the last few years it wouldn't surprise me one bit.
