  1. i missed this. happy belated, my friend.
  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 06:36 PM) How about this: I don't give a flying f*** about the Red Sox. If I wanted to hear someone praise every single move they made, I'd listen to Peter Gammons. Willie Harris is a AAAA player, and unless you consider being able to hit 15 hop grounders to the 2nd baseman as a skill, I don't consider him very talented. I love what he did in the 8th inning of Game 4 of the World Series. I'll always like him because of that. For the rest of his Sox career, he was a pretty big disappointment. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> tony asked for my opinion, i gave him a brief explanation. your entitled to read whatever you would like, just avoid this thread next time.
  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 06:38 PM) You are kidding, right? Power hungry admin? Sorry dude, As someone that knows, Abo is as opposite that description as you can get. He has been a big part of the site growing from less than 10 posters to the current levels. He has contributed a ton. Lighten up. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i have broken the soxtalk rules one time, yet i have been banned twice. theres something wrong with this picture. im perfectly calm, perfectly lightened up, i just would rather discuss baseball than my posting preferences.
  4. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 06:10 PM) Don't make me do a show of hands. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> red sox apologist? perhaps im missing the humor.
  5. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 06:16 PM) Dude, the way you talk to people around here, like an arrogant know it all, has made it easy for others to make you a target. You've dug your own grave. As far as me being an embarassment to Soxtalk, let me remind you that I've been here since the second day the site opened and am one of the most likable posters on the board. Mostly anyone, besides maybe you and a few others boobs who have since been banned, would vouch for that. Perhaps when you gain a little knowledge as to how you should treat and talk to others, you will be better liked around here. Of course, you probably don't care about that, judging by the way you have choosen to exist around here up to this point. Good riddance. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i get along with everybody i want to get along with. i happen to think you offer nothing of value to this board, and dont care to get along with someone whose as arrogant, selfish, and unfriendly as you are. please, im begging you, for once just offer something to the thread rather than being this power hungry admin. you want to ask my opinion of willie harris? im fine with that. you on the other hand dont seem to have any interest in arguing anything, and are much more bias towards your white sox than i am towards my red sox. no good riddance, no best of wishes or anything inbetween. if you want to talk sports, im more than willing. if you want to be an asshole, ill tell you how i feel right back.
  6. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 06:08 PM) Thanks Yoda. Anyway, I will ask you in a more kind way then Boz did. What have the Red Sox done to make themselves that much better than last year? -You upgraded at 2b, but it really solved nothing seeing as you dont have a SS now. -Adam Stern is listed as the starting CF on the Red Sox depth chart. You yourself have said dont count on the Crisp deal being done yet, so I wont. You have Adam Stern as your CF -The Red Sox pitchers arent just going to get better. Its not like Schilling-Wakefield-Wells are going to mature and get better. They are a combined 123, and they make up most of your rotation(Beckett-Schilling-Wakefield-Clement-Wells/Arryo?) Timlan was also the Red Sox savior for most of the season in that pen, and he will be 39 this season. -Toronto got alot better this season, Baltimore as well(thats not saying much) and Tampa always gives the AL East fits. So how do you call this off-season a successful one? (You have said its been successful in the last two weeks) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> the red sox bullpen has improved greatly - one major problem with last years team was the lack of depth in that bullpen, that will hardly be a problem this season. wakefield is as consistent as they come, schilling is slated to be healthy, and wells was an above average pitcher last year. i happen to believe that clement will be improved, beckett will be a top of the line starter, and papelbon and arroyo can be moved to the bullpen. something thats interesting to note is that if this crisp deal is completed, the red sox are no longer forced to trade david wells for a position of need. they have only explored trading him to the phillies and padres and dodgers, all for needs. if the crisp deal is completed, he can be traded for the most talent. in an ideal world, wells would be traded for prospects, possibly a platoon parter in right for nixon, and the rotation would be Schill-Beckett-Wakefield-Clement-Papelbon which i think is a very solid rotation, far better than any other team in the al east's rotations. as for the line-up, with or without crisp, its one of the better line-ups in baseball: loretta 2b youkilis 1b ramirez lf ortiz dh lowell 3b varitek c nixon/marte rf harris cf cora/gonzalez ss or loretta 2b crisp cf ramirez lf ortiz dh lowell 3b varitek c nixon rf youkilis 1b gonzalez ss the bench is solid aswell. im glad we can atleast have some intelligent conversation, i like the direction the red sox are heading, theres no need to bash me for holding that opinion.
  7. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 06:02 PM) I didn't know if he was going for a starting CF position or not so that's where I was coming from. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> the rockies weren't willing to give him the 650k that he was asking for, and were reluctant to guarantee him anything more than 400k. the red sox guaranteed him nothing, but gave him the 650k so long as he comes out in spring training and claims that 25th roster spot.
  8. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 03:38 PM) Is there anyway we can change Red's tag to be "Red Sox Apologist" without his permission? ...just so new-comers know what they're getting themselves into. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> there is no relevance to that tag.
  9. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 03:01 PM) Should we bait him with Kelly Shoppach? Ramirez, Marte, and Kelly are all gone. Which prospects are Red Sox fans going to overrate now? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> again, no trade has been completed. marte and shoppach are still red sox for the time being. as for hanley ramirez, i am fine with trading top of the line young talent so long as you recieve top of the line young talent in return. the reference to the bagwell/anderson trade earlier in this thread was something that i think people over looked. im fine trading a top prospect, like a bagwell or a hanley ramirez, so long as the player being traded for is of josh beckett quality and not larry anderson.
  10. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:16 PM) He did include the phrase, "during the trade". Escobar obviously had value that wasn't zero or very little when he was dealt. So whatever that value was, he thinks Marte has at least twice that potential. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> thank you.
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:04 PM) Isn't there some irony built directly into saying "1 prospect is twice what another prospect was" if the other prospect was a pretty major disappointment? 2 times zero is still zero. 2 times a very small number is still a very small number. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> its irrelevant. saying one player is a better prospect than another is saying just that. andy marte has been rated much higher than alex escobar ever was. good try though.
  12. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:02 PM) Hahaha, he has been too busy voting for himself for most likely to get flamed. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i have not voted myself for most likely to get flamed once nor will i. again, explain, because your making about as much sense as the previous poster made.
  13. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 01:46 PM) And you were holding back so well..... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> explain? my opinion of the trade was asked for, i am choosing to wait until the deal is completed. i'm not quite sure what you mean. if somebody is going to compare alex escobar to andy marte and roberto alomar to coco crisp, it's a little ridiculous. you can't possibly disagree?
  14. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 05:55 PM) How's Willie gonna react to the Coco Crisp trade? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> well considering he signed a deal that didnt even guarantee him a spot on the major league roster, i'm sure this doesn't effect him.
  15. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 05:50 PM) Get off your Red Sox high horse and realize that you have done LITTLE, that's right, LITTLE, to improve your chances of being more than a first round exit playoff team. Have fun struggling to make the playoffs while the AL Central sends two teams to the playoffs next year. By the way, don't forget the ALDS sweep. It always feels good to talk to you about that. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> how is this clown an admin? an absolute embarrassment to soxtalk this guy is. show some class for a change.
  16. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 03:00 PM) Willie Harris' potential = Pokey Reese's potential...and you see how that turned out. Willie can be a good defense replacement and part-time 2B for someone, but, yeah, that's about it. That's what happens when you think you're Joe Morgan and you act like Harry Morgan...or Jaye P. Morgan... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> pokey reese is hardly a good comparison for willie harris. GHC, please?
  17. first of all, just a reminder. nothing has been completed as of right now. second of all, marte is twice the prospect that escobar was during that trade, and suggesting that these two deals have any similarities besides the fact that the indians recieved prospects is ridiculous.
  18. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:05 AM) Slightly different. They mention the Red Sox obtaining Coco Crisp (in addition to a prospect) for Marte an Mota. No exchange of Riske mentioned. Are you going to tell us your opinion now that's it's clear Mota/Marte for Crisp is the main component of the deal? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i think its alot to give up for coco crisp, and when you consider the moneys exchanging hands in the original renteria deal, it only makes it worse. although, this is in no way a jeff bagwell/larry anderson type deal. the red sox will control crisp for the next four years, and however good marte becomes, crisp will be an excellent player aswell. again though, nothing has been finalized. we shall see.
  19. the herald has a different take: http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sportsNe...&format=&page=1
  20. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jan 22, 2006 -> 02:43 PM) You have to admit you slurped Marte as "the closest thing to a can't miss prospect." If I had the search feature available I could find your exact quotes. I would think you'd be up in arms about this trade. You can reserve your feelings until any proposed trade is finalized, but I know personally I'll be upset if such as trade is allowed. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> my opinion of andy marte has not changed. i still think he's a cant miss prospect, just as i did when the red sox had first acquired him. and like i said, ill withhold judgement until the deal is completed.
  21. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jan 22, 2006 -> 02:33 AM) Awaits R&W proclaiming Marte as an overrated prospect who wasn't going to pan out anyway. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> yes, because thats what i am known to do. actually, im not getting worked up about this "deal" until it becomes finalized. if the alex rodriguez trade taught me anything its that nothings official unitl its official. personally, with the deal constructed as it currently is, i'd have rather traded clement to seattle for reed.
  22. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 05:42 PM) High Reward? You've got to be kidding. I'm about the biggest Willie supporter on this site, and I would never classify any move that involved keeping/adding Willie as high reward. Sure, it's not a mistake of a signing. Willie is a serviceable major league player, one who if used right can be very productive for a cheap price, but he's never going to be better than, say, league average. Since it's a non-guaranteed deal, No Risk, Little Reward would be a better classification of the deal. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> so you think we have seen the best of willie harris? many people believe that he hasn't came close to reaching his potential, me included, and as yasny rightfully said, the guy is a very talented player, its because he knows that which hinders him...
  23. low risk, high reward - the red sox offseason continues to be a success.
  24. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jan 13, 2006 -> 03:59 PM) Easy way to settle this. R&W: As of right now, do you support trading Manny? If you do, what return would satisfy you expectations of a good deal in Boston's favor? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> of course i dont support trading manny. im on record here saying he's the best right handed hitter in baseball (with pujols, vlad); however, if he truly cannot take the star status he's given in boston, then by all means make him happy if the right deal arises. to be honest, talent wise, the only rumored deal i'd consider at this point is the tejada one and adding clement into the mix is pushing it.
  25. QUOTE(TheHammer @ Jan 10, 2006 -> 08:19 PM) For what it is worth, Abreu isn't just another RFer, he is a boarderline HOF caliber RFer. He is having a HOF career in a small market. If that offer was really made to us I am a little disappointed that we didn't take it. He could hit 50 HRs in the cell <{POST_SNAPBACK}> citizens bank is a more homer friendly park than the cell is. oh brother... :headshake
