QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) About 5 players are making around $50 million total. Pauly, Mark, Jon, Jose, and Javy. However, the structure of the payroll this year was premised on the idea that several of our position players would produce at a rate above what their salaries are, such as Dye, Thome, Iguchi, Joe Crede, Erstad, and perhaps Scott Podsednik. Unfortunately, that has not been the case thus far. Next season, several of those players will be Free Agents and will either command in excess of what we can pay them, or have declined in performance to where they would not be players you would want on your club anyway. Now we have to find players who are dependable and reasonably compensated, which is always a difficult task, UNLESS you have the pipeline of young players coming through your system. From all experience thus far, we do not. Thats why I want Eric Byrnes, either as a top of the order guy or betting 5th. Plus hes a good OF'er too, and a Free Agent.

You mean make one last ditch effort to sign him like they did maggs then let him walk when the sox still didn't match the asking price.
-
Am I hearing this correct. Is erstad hurt already hurt and out the game. This is getting ridicolous. Can we please get not bring any guy to this team that is even slightly capable of being injury prone. Here comes the company line "we are going to sit erstad for awhile so as better to loose him for 5 days instead of 5 weeks somewhere down the line...". This is so annoying.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 05:34 PM) Cubs/Sox series' are not big series anymore. At all. Id rather watch clips of your avatar of the manager throwing the rosen bag like a grenade all day than watch the cubs sox stuff like a hawk.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 03:50 PM) It was in the second half of last season. Buehrle even said himself his loss of velocity was a big problem for him. He said the difference in speed between his fastball at 85-87 mph to his change up at 81-82 was a big drop off from his normal fastball at 88-89 mph to his change up. He said he wasn't able to keep hte hitters off balance enough and use his change up effectively and it was getting hammered since it was too close in velocity to his fastball. Since his velocity is back up to 88-89 hes been much better and his K rate is up too, important in our hitter friendly park.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 03:35 PM) This is absolutely correct. I read today that supposedly Buehrle is seeking $70M for 5yrs. If that's what he's really asking, it should be a no-brainer for the Sox to re-sign him today. By the end of that contract, $14M per year will be a bargain for a pitcher of Mark's calibur. Especially if by 35 or whatever he turns into Greg Maddux.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 05:00 PM) Outside of his defense at 3B, I've been pleasantly surprised by Fields. Fields still strikes out way too much and walks very little, but I would assume with the more AB's he gets the less pitchers just go right after the rookie and the more counts he will get to work.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 04:19 PM) I'd settle for the Sox scoring runners from 2B on a hit. A runner on 2B is not a runner in scoring position with most of the guys currently on the active roster. You are 100% right on that one, lets do this. Guys that can for sure score from 2B on a hit get a "X", guys that can sometimes score from 2B on a hit get a "Y", and guys that can score from 1B on an extra base hit get a "Z". AJ = Y Hall = Y Cintron = X Fields = Y Iguchi = X Konerko = Y Uribe = X Dye = Y Mack = X Terrero = X Owens = X,Z Thome = Y Gonzalez = X So in summation we have (6/13, 46%) position players who aren't even a default for scoring from 2B on a base hit. We have (7/13, 54%) position players who can actually consistently score a run from 2B on a base hit. And we have (1/13, 8%) of our position players can score from first on an extra base hit. The Marlins scored a runner from first 4 times with 3 different players in this series in one of the smallest outfields in baseball. Hermedia, Willingham, Caroll all scored from first on extra base hits and guess what the Marlines one every game in which they had men score from first. Shocker.

The problem with the whole sox against giving pitchers deals more than 3 years thing is that Buehrle isn't the type of pitcher this idea protects the team from. The whole 3 years thing is basically a good idea to protect against all those power pitchers throwing the heck out the ball and their arms. Guys like Kerry Wood, Bartolo Colon, Randy Johnson, AJ Burnett, etc. In which case I agree dont offer these power arms more than 3 years because as history has shown it is very likely they will break down and be injured for extended periods of time. The sox did a good job with this not offering Colon 4 years like the Angels did after 2003. The problem is Buehrle is exactly the opposite of this theory of 3 year contracts etc. If the sox don't like offering longer contracts to pitchers because they are worried about their durability, well than I think they are confused with who Buehrle is. If there was going to be one exception to the 3 years rule it would be Mark Buehrle (OK maybe Maddux too). Buerhle is far from a power pitcher with the likely potential for arm troubles that we saw from recent free agents like Colon and Burnett, and more like the above mentioned Greg Maddux. These finesse pitchers, while they sometimes struggle to strike guys out or keep the ball from being put in play, are the most durable type of pitchers in baseball. So essentially, the last reason the sox should give for not offereing MB more than 3 years should be one based on durability. we all know his track record we all know Buehrle eats innings and is definatly a workhouse that stays healthy. If the sox dont want to offer Mark 5 Years 65 Mil or whatever becuase they think they can get a better pitcher for that then fine, but we dont want to hear about this 3 year contract business anymore with Mark. Some people think with the hitter friendly park and average defense the sox have on the field a finesse guy isn't what they need for the next 5 years and thats fine. If a power arm like a Brad Penny on the market is what you want then go get him, but don't give me this business about Buehrle and 3 years crap it does not apply. PS. Even if the sox want Penny, a guy you definatly do not want to give more than 3 years too, forget about it. If Ted Lily and get 4 years and Gil Meche 5 years Penny can get the same if not better. So there is no way the sox get any quality arm, power or finesse on a 3 year deal.

How many times did the Marlins score a runner from first on an extra base hit compared to us. Sheesh its like every time they get a runner on first and hit a double they score easily. Is it just me or is that insane. And its not just the marlins I see it all the time against us; Angles, Twins, Indians, etc. All these teams seem to so easily score from first and I cant even remember the last time we did so. I really think this is a problem and KW should address the speed of his roster and OF next year. Sometimes its these suttle nuanceas of a game like having the a guy get a two out walk or hit followed by a double where a run can score that can win or lose you a ballgame.

QUOTE(That funky motion @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 05:28 PM) Out for 2 to 3 days. Per Channel 7. Yeah right with Thome and his "violent swing" we will be lucky to see him by next week. Here comes the company line, "well we'd rather be careful and sit him a few extra days here intstead of lose him for a few weeks down the line" blah blah. This team is so lathargic and old its ridicolous, at least the quality players are. We need Dye, Konerko, Thome, and Pods clicking to be a real offense and most of the time 3/4 are battling some sort of injury or nagging strain or sore something. Get rid of your fragile boys Kenny.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 12:23 PM) These pitchers are basically crap. They should do better than Aaardsma and MaaacDougal have done, but worse than what you would have thought would have been average for them. I agree they are journeymen and bounced around all these years for a reason. Cuz they cant get major league hitters out. At least we can say the others teams haven't already figured them out the way they did Aardsma and Massett.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 10:23 AM) Bukvich has always had a solid arm. As for Fuentes... havne't we (and many other GMs) learned that dealing for relief pitching is the dumbest thing in the history of the world? I dunno dealing for relief pitches that dont really have live arms that play in the NL and then come to the AL yeah they get lit up. The Francisco Cordero trade looks pretty good for the brewers, bob wickman for the braves. I agree though the best way to get a lights out closer is to make one, like the red sox did with papelbon. I think a great closer/set up guy would be Rafael Soriano of the braves.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 3, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) DL MacDougal for whatever that mystery injury he has is. Send Aardsma down. Call up Prinz and Vazquez... How about release or trade Aardsma just get him off the roster. Hes Neal Cotts with a few extra MPH. Hes not even a flame thrower. None of these guys are. I see Aardsma throwing 92-94, same with MacDougal and Thornton. AArdsma only has 1 pitch which he struggles to control and a bad breaking ball thats always int he dirt, cough Neal Cotts, cough. The cubs knew this as did all their fans too bad we had to find out for ourselves, although they had the same thing with Cotts. When we talk about a bullpen that keeps the ball from being put in play you model after the Rodney's and Zumaya's. Problem is they actually light up the gun at 97-100 and actually blow people away. Our guys cant locate at 92 mph and walk everyone and fall behind. At this point just get some guys who can throw strikes or get real guys who throw 98+ every fastball.

QUOTE(The Human Borch @ May 31, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) clever, but here's a better one: White Sox Bullpen- We suck! Maybe yours is better.

White Sox Bullpen.....Chics dig the long ball! White Sox Relief Pitching.......Chics dig the long ball!

I think Ozzie is saying kinda like what Lou was saying on the N Side. I think Ozzie is thinking we got all this talent, we got the same 7 all starts from last years team, we got a bullpen that light up the gun, and yeah we got a few injuries but what more can ozzie do. His guys have just sucked, the same guys who are all all stars have just sucked for him this year. Everyone is hitting a ton below their normal averages, the teams ERA which was like 3.8 about 10 days ago is now 4.52. His guys are getting beat and beating themselves and their numbers prove it. They have track records and they are playing like they are lost, thats on them. Most of them are veteran professionals they know what they need to do its just not working out at this point. Why cant they just suck and be bad, cuz thats all it is. Let them play 162 games maybe they can improve some over their .500 record, but everyone knows its gonna be tough to leap 4 teams, 2 of which who are on pace for 95 wins.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:16 PM) It's really tough right now. In my head, I know it's good for the Sox to lose, as they have no chance to catch the Indians/Tigers and the best thing that could happen would be to get some talented prospects for our aging veterans. In my heart though, I'm used to watching Sox games that matter and being pissed off if they lose. Sadly, I don't even really have any emotions about them losing today....just annoyed that's it gotten this bad so quickly. What annoys me is that Twins just arent that good. They have no pitchers outside of Santana and Boonser is decent. They have 4 good hitters; Morneau, Hunter, Mauer, Cuddyear and a cast of clown who all struggle to hit .250. QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) What you said is it was a bad match up because of fastball tendancies. You are making lots of generalizations here with nothing to back it up, other than saying things a million times. Aardsma was pitching damn well inside earlier this year. It's not so much he can't, he showed he could and Sox fans loved him. His confidence and command are awful now and he needs to fix it, preferably in Charlotte for a few weeks IMO. Hunter's best swings are like most players best swings, when pitches stay out over the plate. Hunter has trouble with good sliders. If his best swings, as "everyone knows" are vs. fb's, well what is Jenks best pitch, I believe it is a fastball. He was throwing at least 95 every pitch when he was striking those guys out early. Before Mac started struggling Aardsma could just come in and rear back and fire. Now he is trying to be fine cuz he is being used in pressure situations with no room for error, since that role I haven't seen him above 92 on the gun. Terrible.

Gotta love Kw getting all those flame throwers for the bullpen. Newflash it doesn't work when everyone in the league knows u struggle to throw strikes, they wont swing at your overpowering heat Kenny. Why dont u get someone with control who throws heat, not these clowns.
-
QUOTE(GoSox05 @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:05 PM) are bullpen is the worst in baseball. I seriously think the Nats/Royals/Marlins/D Rays could have done better in the 9th.

Walk, Botched Force Attempt, Botched Force Attempt, Walk....ballgame. Gotta love the way the twins win.
-
Toby Hall is 1:2 swing at first pitch and 20:1 to get a hit.
-
The game will be won by, hit/walk, steal then hit.
-
There is your game winning run in punto. Guaranteed steal or hit and run coming.
-
Who wants to bet Ozzie trots a Garland with 6 ER and 5 BB right back out there to start the 7th only to give up a hit and a walk then take him out and bring in the clown car in a pressure situation.
