Javy Vazquez.....now what do we do??
CanOfCorn replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Don't look at Javy's record of 106-110 for two reasons...playing on that horrible Expos team for a few years and the fact that he always said he didn't want to keep moving around. He is finally adjusted and comfortable with a team. He's going to be 33 or 34 when this deal is up. I say keep him and trade Garland. I know he had that HORRIBLE start the other day, but he's still a back-to-back 18 game winner and his ERA is still below 4. AND, he's signed through next year, so he's not a rental. I don't want to lose him either, but the Sox aren't going to re-sign him (opinion only). -
Mark Buehrle Agrees to 4-yr, 56 mil with escalator clause

This has made my day!!!!! Kap...where are you and your "Absolutely no chance this deal gets done" arse!!! -
QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 08:59 AM) What, no Oxycotin? That's Rush Limbaugh III.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 12:01 PM) Ozzie was ROY in 1985. That year he had virtually identical OBP and slugging pct. as Brian Anderson in 2006. So BA is a cocky SOB, but Ozzie backed it up? I'll grant you OBP, but slugging pct? Come ON...Ozzie was NEVER a 5-tool guy. He had defense and could slap the ball around a little bit, but he didn't have the 20-25 hr potential EVER that a guy like Brian Anderson has. Plus, as was stated earlier. Ozzie IS a cocky SOB, but he respects the game, I don't believe he thinks BA does.

White Sox vs. Twins, Game 1 of DH, 7/06/07 (L)
CanOfCorn replied to BearSox's topic in 2007 Season in Review
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 09:42 AM) There probably won't be any trades today, because that would leave the roster short for the DH. I'm surprised Floyd is pitching the night game. It must mean they are keeping him around. Maybe they will use him out of the bullpen. Masset wasn't stretched out enough. He's only pitched once in like...12 days or something like that. -
QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 09:53 AM) But Jon Rauch? He was just a kid...in the majors for the first time...and he did some fool thing and GONE. It's interesting. Clearly he's not Dusty Baker who doesn't want young guys. But if he meets a young guy with an ego? Dog house. Even more curious since Ozzie as a player was up and brash at 21 True, but Ozzie backed it up and was Rookie of the Year. I think if Rauch put up a sub-4 ERA or Anderson hit .280+ with about a .350 OBP, they would have gotten a lot more leash. But they didn't. Ozzie is a put up or shut up kinda guy. Always has been.
-
QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 09:38 AM) My biggest problem with Ozzie is...Brian Anderson, Jon Rauch, Brandon McCarthy...wtf happened??? If you hustle, if you do the little things, if you don't have an ego the size of...well...Ozzie himself, if you go up to the plate aggressively, if you challenge hitters but get beat, Ozzie will take a liking to you. Grinder? Maybe. But, all he wants to see is someone who is improving. Remember at the end of last year, BA was hitting better, but Ozzie kept saying he was looking better. He doesn't care if you hit .220 or .280 as long as you don't look like a fool at the plate, because those will become hits eventually. When BA came back this year, he reverted to first half last year form and THAT'S what pissed Ozzie off. Brandon, I think, was more of a Kenny Williams decision. But that's just a hunch.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 5, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him have a dominant second half. It's happened before. I think this 11 day rest period will help him a lot. If he pitches two good games on the 16th and 21st (if that's his next start) then you will get some good players for him. I'm glad they are giving him some rest...he can probably use it. Perhaps he can watch old Matlock episodes while he's in the La-Z-Boy.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 04:21 PM) So how are you faring down there in Austin with all the rain? We have our Noah the Ark built in back of our house. Well, we can't go boating on Lake Travis, Lake Austin or Town Lake, so I've been using my boat to get to work. Or swimming to and from to get some exercise. How's Big D?

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) $19 million in guaranteed money is still a lot. Considering JR and his buddies bought the White Sox and Comiskey Park, and land around it less than 30 years ago for about $20 million it may put things into perspective. If Buerhle wants to set generations of Buerhles up for life or maybe he has other aspirations 20 or 30 years from now, a few million can become an awful lot in that time span. FYI, the White Sox doesn't own Comiskey. They rent it.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) Hey, we can all dream, right? Dream away, but it ain't happenin'. Remember, Reinsdorf's first and best love is baseball (only using him because he is the face of the Board).

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 02:15 PM) I'm going to say it again. There's something more here. If it were as simple as the NTC, this would be done. That cannot be the only "block" to this deal. We all need to stop believing everything that's in the media. Wasn't really talking about Buehrle specifically. I was talking about the NTC generally.
-
Here's what I don't get...MOST players would much rather waive their no-trade clause to be with a team that they can either, A) give them more money or B. actually wants them. While I understand the point of a NTC, they are more of a nice gesture than an actual stumbling block. That's most of the time, not all of the time. Want an example of what I mean? See: Jose Contreras. Limited NTCs are more damaging if you ask me. That way, you have already eliminated a percentage of the teams a player is willing to go to, but if you ask the player to waive it, they (or their agent) can always say, "Look, you've got x number of teams that we WILL go to, work those angles." All I'm saying is that the Sox should just bite the bullet and do it. Deal with the NTC later.

QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jun 30, 2007 -> 04:23 PM) Anybody who believes that JC is 35 is high. I'm 41 and he looks 15 years older than me. I'm 36 and Greg Oden looks 15 years older than me.

Wow...I've seen some pessimism on this board...especially prior to 2005, but for the love of all that's holy...you do realize that KW BUILT the 2005 team. Now, just two years later, after a 90 win season and a bunch of players that are underachieving. I understand the anger and frustration, but I don't understand the little faith in the front office. No GM is 100% right...in fact, they probably aren't even 80% right. But, before you lump Kenny in with Bowden, Krivsky and LaMar...let's see what happens. For all we know, they are waiting until the get back from the road trip so Reinsdorf can meet with Buerhle in person. All I'm saying is...just wait. If he doesn't get good players THEN you can crucify him.

First of all...who here remembers the shot of one Bill Cartwright? That is now the 2nd ugliest shot to ever be in the NBA. And yet, he had a 15 year career and won three rings. Secondly, not everyone can be LeBron, Kobe, or Wade when they come out of school. Noah works VERY hard and the Bulls love effort. Thirdly, maybe he is an assclown, but he's going to be a rich, NBA playin' assclown...which is more than I can say for everyone on this board. Finally, I think Pax has got something up his sleeve. One of Noah, Thomas or Wallace is headed out the door...probably not Wallace, though. Just a hunch.

I remember 21...it was...wait, no, I did...nope, don't remember it at all. Happy Birthday!!!

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 28, 2007 -> 10:46 PM) Wright hates Bruce Weber. Completely hates him. Why?
-
QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 11:20 AM) Right after he digs it out and dusts it off. Seriously, those rings mean more to us than they do to them. That may be true...but if someone was calling me stupid, and I had something like that to back it up, I WOULD take it out and dust it off. And you know why? Cuz I'm petty.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 11:16 AM) I think they will ask questions and snoop really hard and they should but if they hold anything up and something happens to the deal, could they not be held liable? They can not prove what he is going to get in the open market. Buerhle needs to stay healthy and pitch well to get a huge deal. There is a huge risk should they cause the deal to fall through and something happens that precludes Buerhle from getting $56M guaranteed down the road. I would imagine the MLBPA would have to show, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Buehrle could get more years AND more money on the open market. Which would be IMPOSSIBLE to do since GMs aren't going to come out before then and say, "Suuuurrrrrre, I'll give him 7/126 just like Zito!!!"
-
QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 10:43 AM) In the end, if this is the deal Mark takes, I would guess the worst that happens is he's called stupid by others in his talent class as they collect higher contracts. And he can sit back, kick up his feet and blind them with the luster that is his 2005 World Series Championship ring. The exchange rate isn't that bad anymore. At least not like it used to...but the taxes there are still high. And the lack of a State Income Tax in Texas and Florida is why a lot of athletes have homes in those states. I believe Scottie Pippen had a home in Houston, as did Shaq before he went to the Heat.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 07:54 AM) I'd love for Kenny to find another GM that's in love with all of those peripherals and get a nice haul for Javy. Then, the Sox can fill some holes and find a pitcher with some guts that can pitch well when in crucial games that matter and come thru with the wins when it really counts - a guy with the brains and stomach to get the job done. I noticed that in all of this talk about Javy no one mentioned his W-L record. Interesting. I like that Garland guy that won 18 games last year and the year before. And, that Buehrle guy that wins 60 % of the time. I'll take a couple more like that and let everyone else count the strikeouts. Wins and losses don't measure a pitcher. Look at our bullpen this year...if you are shutting out a team into the 8th inning and the bullpen comes in and blows it...not going to be in your W-L record. Of course we are overvaluing our players, quick...but you also have to look at the market. Who else is Buehrle's caliber that might be moved? Trachsel? Matt Morris? The ONLY one that would trump Buehrle is Zambrano and no one knows where the Cubs stand on that. Simple supply and demand...the demand should be higher when the supply is lower. In an "average" year, Buehrle WOULD be a "B" pickup...but it's not an "average" year. And honestly, the worst the opposing GM can say is no.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 28, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) ...again, I feel the need to step in Mr. 101. It's long been rumored that Dunnigan and Humphrey will be a package--if so, you take them both without a second's thought. Dunnigan is a rare talent and has the potential to be an absolute monster in the Big Ten. He would be a big man the likes of which Illinois has never seen. Likewise, Humphrey has a lot to offer. He is shooting up the charts and is an absolute sniper from beyond the arc--in other words, a perfect fit for Weber's offense. If you add both Dunnigan and Humphrey and tack-on Suggs, Miller, or, if you can imagine, Shumpert, that will go down as the single greatest recruiting class in Illinois history (strictly speaking from a High School ranking type point of view--once they get there, who knows). Dunnigan, Humphrey and Suggs and the Illini are in business and Weber just netted his best class. Dunnigan, Humphrey and Shumpert and Weber has gone above and beyond this class's expectations and the Illini really have some special in the works. (For what it's worth, my prediction on June 28th is Dunnigan. Humphery, and Suggs.) Two words Addy... Jens Kujawa

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 28, 2007 -> 03:37 PM) While we're foolishly waiting around for any type of update, what's everyone's percentage in terms of Buehrle re-signing in the next 2 days? I'm at 30 pct now. You wouldn't be Mr. Pessimism if it weren't! I am going to stay at 50/50.
