QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 01:44 PM) It could be another fun year in Dekalb. That HAS to be the first time anyone has ever uttered that phrase! Is Scamnesia still there?

Dan Shanoff of ESPN's Page 2 had an idea of including all of the Divison I teams. It's kind of a three or four tiered thing. Top 32 teams get a bye through to the final 64. The rest fight it out to get the last 32 spots and then it's the same as usual. He suggests that this will create more George Mason scenarios (although didn't mention them directly) and would get the smaller schools more tv time. I like the idea to a point, but does Chicago State, Quinnipiac and IUPUFW really need to play another game to show that they don't deserve to play in the tournament? Would people actually watch a Robert Morris-Stephen F. Austin showdown? Methinks not.

What was the worst trade in baseball history?
CanOfCorn replied to thedoctor's topic in The Diamond Club
Don't forget Bagwell for Anderson or Smoltz for Doyle Alexander. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2006 -> 01:27 AM) Seriously though, what's with Garner and throwing chairs? He tossed a chair in the dugout during last year's world series as well. Damn, pick on an inanimate object your own size why don't ya. Maybe he went to the Bobby Knight Fantasy Camp.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 07:15 PM) Further complicating matters are Freddy's relationship with Ozzie and Jon's relationshp with Mark. Don't worry about this...Kenny will trade anyone if he thinks it will upgrade the team, just ask Aaron Rowand. Remember, he is tight with Crede and AJ.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 04:46 PM) The only way anyone gets to that ball is if they are shading him towards the line. He cued that ball, and it couldnt of been thrown better in that spot. The only comment I will make, is Dye would of played that ball in front of him, and limited to a double. Gload who is a poor, OF made things worse by throwing himself on the ground trying to make sportscenter, and then coming up and just standing there. He didnt know where the ball was, and did seem to care to look. Having a guy at 2nd is a big difference than having a guy at 3rd. I honestly believe that Gload thought that ball was foul. If he believed it were fair, I don't think he woulda gone all out for it like he did. I don't know if that's true, but when he stood up, he looked like he was trying to get the out on a foul...JMHO.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 12:04 PM) That's awesome. Cheers to the Oracle of Omaha! I think its particularly interesting using the Gates foundation, just because of the parallels. Gates himself originally wasn't into the charitable stuff at all, until his wife nudged him into it. Buffett was, it appears, inspired by his wife as well. I can hear the conversation now: "Warren, honey, think of your legacy." *rolling around on bed covered in money* "Screw my legacy!" "Oh, Warren." *laugh track* I hope this money gets put to good use.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) I saw an episode of it last night for the first time. It was hilarious, but as Finkelstein said, the acting was terrible. And they used the word "f**," so it's very insensitive. Is Mariotti on it?

Memo to Jim Thome: Please adjust to Inside Pitch
CanOfCorn replied to Hangar18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 11:42 AM) Hopefully he doesnt spend the rest of the season trying to adjust to the inside pitch. Thome is just as dangerous taking walks and Frustrating the Pitcher to the point they try to sneak a fastball by him is what made him very Frank Thomas-like in April. Every mistake he scorched, of course this is the AL, the pitchers arent foolish the 2nd time around. Im thinking he hasnt been in the AL for a while so its taking him some getting used to again. But we need him to do so ........... Going 0 for 6 last nite hurt us very much, any kind of hit probably wins us the game. Isn't that why there are 9 guys playing...and 25 on the team? Thome went 0-fer...but Iguchi had 7 RBIs! See how that works! -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 26, 2006 -> 07:40 AM) The Oracle of Omaha is giving away $37 of his estimated $44 billion fortune to charity. How incredible! http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=100...=top_world_news DAMMIT!!! I can't believe he announced it on the same day I gave $37 of my $44 fortune to charity. Thanks for taking my thunder, Warren!

I hope Vazquez is a little light in the wallet today cuz he needs to be buying dinner for Konerko, Cintron, Mackowiak, Podsednik, Cotts, Jenks and ESPECIALLY Iguchi. Someone at work said to me, "Tough loss last night," and I was like, why? It serves notice that the White Sox are NEVER out of the game and will NEVER quit. You hear that Tigers? That's the sound of a freight train on your ass.

Fairyotti with predictable whining about "light" punishment
CanOfCorn replied to NUKE_CLEVELAND's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jun 25, 2006 -> 07:17 PM) Just what was Jay refering to when he constantly called Frank the Big Skirt? Wasn't he making a gay reference? I guess it is ok for him to do, but not others. ^^^^^^^ BINGO!! And not only that, forget about going to the clubhouse, how about taking it as good as you can dish it out. He calls people names all the time...he's the Rush Limbaugh of sports reporting. Just say whatever you want, but if someone goes against you, use the only thing you have, more name calling. What an ass. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 12:05 PM) Okay. Fair enough. C'mon, let's hug it out.

Cardinal pitching coach Duncan irate at Ozzie too?
CanOfCorn replied to Hangar18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:39 AM) I'm kind of not. I thought the break last year would do him some good, but obviously it didn't. It's sad to see him dealing with things the way he has been. IMO, cutting away from baseball may be the only way he sees 30. And thanks Yas. I appreciate the thought. I may have missed this post, but how do you know him, Steff? Are you an Arubian Dame? -
QUOTE(Soxfest @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:47 AM) I am no JM fan, but I am tired of OG talking just to hear himself talk about NON on the field baseball related issues...a no comment from him on certain subjects would be nice from time to time. the sox knew what they were getting when they hired him. By the way, I heard an interesting take on this from Colin Cowherd this morning. He basically said that, yes, Ozzie was wrong for calling Mariotti a f**. But, if you are going to write columns without being there everyday, or even being there everyday, that's what happens in a big league clubhouse. Does that make it right? No. Does it mean nobody should ever be offended? No. But it happens, and if you are going to write something about someone, how can you not expect some retaliation in some form. Also, this wasn't a John Rocker or Jimmy the Greek or Marge Schott or Al Campanis situation, because this was a man-to-man argument. Those other people made gross generalizations about blacks or gays and Ozzie was just pissed off at one guy. Not Bud Selig, not baseball, not fans, but one "columnist." Should he be fined? Yes, because he said something stupid and he should know when to hold his tongue. But that won't stop him. He is who he is and he will never be anything different and I respect him immensely for that. He's always said he would take the shots, but he will also stand up for himself. For Mariotti to be surprised by this turn of events is absolutely ridiculous. That's like Ozzie being surprised that Mariotti came up with a pithy nickname like "The Blizzard of Oz." This should be handled in-house and not in the papers. If you want to read him, read him. But, for the love of god, please don't defend him...he can (but won't) do it himself.
-
QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:33 AM) Pfft. Sheep. Right. No, I'm the guy who actually reads him. And again I say: prove that Mariotti is so anti-Sox. If he's full of s***, he's full of s*** and I'll say it when he is (and he is sometimes). But excuse me if I don't get in line to drink to Kool-Aid here. If he were that much of a Sox-bashing jagoff, I would have stopped reading him long ago. Really, Chip? I'm one of the biggest, loyal Sox fans in the world so obviously you don't know what you're talking about. Try coming up with something better than a lame straw man. The problem with Mariotti is that he DOESN'T take a stand. To use your example, yes, he heralded Kenny for the trades he made this offseason, but if something goes wrong, like Thome gets hurt or Vazquez pitches poorly (knocking on wood), then he is THE FIRST to say, "What the hell was (insert pithy Kenny Williams nickname here) thinking about getting a guy that is prone to injury or gave up 84 homeruns last year." That's what's unfair. You don't have to pick a side and stick with it, but he writes like he's Randi Rhoades one week and Ann Coulter the next. He's not a reporter, he's an op/ed columnist. If he could say that to me and to the White Sox, he may be better off.
-
QUOTE(SouthSidePride05 @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:04 AM) Why is anyone taking Jay seriously? Why is anyone even reading his columns? You're letting the idiot win by letting him get under your skin. I never read his columns.. whenever I see him on ESPN, I immediately turn it.. so he's not bothering me one bit. Ozzie and others in the organization should've done the same. I'm not disappointed in anything Ozzie said, that's Ozzie being Ozzie, but I'm disappointed that Ozzie and others are letting a lowlife idiot "columnist" make them look stupid. Because they can't. The media will always ask about what this columnist said and what that columnist did. "I didn't read it," doesn't work, because the person asking the question will then reiterate what was said, and then it's taken out of context. It just can't happen.

The Hawkisms are what makes him Hawk. That's what makes him great. Of course he's a homer...but so what? If you want someone to call a game, watch Vin Scully. If you want to watch the game with a friend, sitting on the couch, drinking a beer, smoking a stogie...listen to Hawk. At least that's the way I see it. He has the perfect mixture of baseball knowledge and pure tom-foolery. I, for one, love and miss him, now that I have to hear the talking dead here in Texas. Thank the lord for Milo Hamilton on Astros radio...it's good to hear someone cheer for a team.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 10:54 AM) Kim Jung Il is threatening to test-launch a missile that may or may not be capable of reaching the United States. In response, some people are worrying, Japan is considering a re-armament, and South Koreans are probably a little tense. The New York Times has a piece here: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/20/opinion/...r=1&oref=slogin but my take is different than most people's, I suspect. Let me state, momentarily, that I love Korea — both Koreas. Their history is fascinating, and I think their situation to be the most complex, worst problem in the world today. A people split by foreign powers who took different paths but ultimately need to be reunited. When the day comes that I travel the world, I want to go to Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Russia, Turkey) and then the Orient, particularly the Koreas. Now that my love for the East is stated, let me say that I’ve been following the Korean crisis for years, and that North Korea’s recent threats to launch a missile test don’t quite bother me. To be sure, it’s creepy. Kim Jung Il is the world’s biggest creep this side of John Bolton, and so it’s natural to expect this sort of behavior from him. Unless we intend to give him a lot of diplomatic assurances, money and food — or if we take the hardest road and invade — there’s little leverage that we have. Kim Jung Il is unlikely to be anything more than the Madonna of international politics — an attention whore, and not much else. If he does test his missile, I’m tempted to discount its significance. We’ve known that he can build missiles and shoot them into the Sea of Japan since 1998. What, exactly, changes? Just because he kisses Britney Spears twice doesn’t mean he’s not the same old attention whore from the late 1990s. Ultimately, the situation in Korea is one that will have to be resolved by politicians being statesmen. Provided that, if (and likely when) the Koreans test a missile again, the proper response is verbal condemnation, and that’s about it. There’s no reason for Japan to begin re-arming, no cause for American threats, no need to worry in Seoul. Kim Jung Il is creepy, not crazy. As long as the West and its Eastern Allies keep a cool head when the missile launches, everything should work out. There’s no reason to go on a warpath unless Jung assaults Korea or Japan. A test meant to show the world that he’s not a joke is something to ignore, not a reason to get your war on, and everyone should stay calm and any storm will pass. It was...inewitable.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 10:06 AM) At least up until a couple of weeks ago, the White Sox played a weaker schedule than Detroit. I find this talk that the White Sox continuing to win is bothering Detroit, pretty funny. They continue to win as well. There were several on here that said the Tigers would fade in June and wouldn't be .500. They would have to lose the next 8 for that to happen. Dye, Konerko, Thome, Crede, and AJP are performing much higher offensively than what could be expected. I doubt they will continue with their torrid pace. Detroit is a good team and they're most likely for real. There haven't been many frauds that got to 24 over .500. Let's not talk about the Cardinals without Puhjols as one of the better teams in baseball. The Cubs kicked them all over the place. These are both good teams, and it probably will come down to who can remain healthier, and what kind of adjustments are made before the trade deadline. If you look a the original question, I was actually asking about both teams. Detroit won't go away, but with the Sox nipping at their heels, does that make them antsy? Does the fact that the Sox have played fantastic ball lately and have actually lost a half a game make the Sox antsy? I was just wondering what people thought.

QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 12:01 PM) Now I'm confused Regardless as to if it was intentional or not, I'm glad Riske retaliated. This is the second time in a week a pitcher has hit our batters in a shady fashion. Regardless of the truth, I'm just happy we got one back. Call me a jerk, call me what you will. This is exactly true. If it was just Anderson...fine...a pitch got away. And even if the pitch to Ozuna got away...and totally unintentional, that doesn't mean we shouldn't retaliate. You aren't a jerk, that's baseball. Players have been thrown at for a lot less.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 09:34 AM) Lets see... Styx (cool, friendly guys) Villiage People (great guys, REALLY funny, Awesome show) Kenny Rogers (kind of a jerk, SUCKED in concert) Travis Tritt (biggest asshole and hypocrate ever) Doobie Bros (friendly guys as well) REO Speedwagon (awesome Chicago guys) Faith Hill (Really nice, and down to earth) Charile Daniels (very cool dude) CCR (minus John Fogarty) I know there are some I am forgetting... I spent a few years working on the grandstand staff for the county fair, setting up the concerts. I bet!

Getting Smoltz would be subtraction by addition. Not that Smoltz would be bad for that team, but losing the talent they would have to give up, like a Zumaya, would hurt more than Smoltz would help.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 06:16 AM) It is still wierd to me that KGJ would be so against playing for the Sox only because they train in Tampa. Its about the ring, not the location of Spring Training. If he doesnt understand that, he doesnt need to be on the White Sox and I dont want him on the White Sox. C'mon kyyle, you've got to respect a man for putting family first over a ring. I understand that's what these guys play for, but at some point, you have to realize that your family lasts forever, while your playing career doesn't.
