  1. It's funny cuz all I'm worried about is the Twins game tonight. Relax. Ozzie was watching Trader Jack last time around when the Marlins won with good pitching and "smart" ball. One game at a time, please.
  2. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 03:47 PM) Here's how I hope they end this feud: They see each other somewhere, Hawk throws one punch, Mariotti is on the ground, game over. "Two hits. Me hitting you, you hitting the floor." Anyway, I hope some of you realize that Hawk has been with this team longer than some of you have been alive. Let's compare two announcers that are roughly the same age, Hawk and Vin Scully. Now I think Scully has the smoothest voice ever. I think if you are not a baseball fan and are trying to learn the game, Vin's your man. I think if you are listening to a ballgame that is between two teams you don't care too much about, listen to Vin. If I'm watching my White Sox, I want a buddy to listen with. And Hawk's the man for the job. I know baseball pretty well. I can disagree with Hawk just like I would with any of you if we were watching a game together. He's fun to listen to and he's got a pretty damn good knowledge of the game, too. Scully comes from a different era of announcers where the only time they get excited is if there is something HUUUUGE happening (Kirk Gibson in '88 comes to mind). Hawk gets excited on a big pitch in the game or a timely out or a ducksnort to keep an inning alive, just like I do. And THAT's what I like about Hawk. As for Mariotti, he does his job. He gets people on boards to talk about him. And I think that this is like Professional Wrestling...they go out and have a beer when no one is looking.

    WOOOOHOOOOOOO!

    The new name for my band, Schwa Deletion (previous: Squeegee). Congrats...
  4. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 06:04 PM) Yes, but about 2 months into the season he started getting his whole package over the plate again, but people were still hitting him. You said package.
  5. I'm not a big fan of his, but...Bruce Springsteen? Or how about Carole King? Or Willie Nelson?
  6. Last story on page. Good luck Shingo. Shingo to the Mets on ESPN
  7. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:00 PM) Ugh, Mel's kid did the voices horribly. warner had a better replacement in mind too, as you probably know, but the gig went to Blanc's kid. In total agreement that the Mupppet spark flickered out when Jim died (of friggin' pneumonia, of all things), but I think that has more to do with the corporate gobbling up of the franchise by the Mouse than by a lack of creativity on Henson's son's part. Dinosaurs, for example, was quite well done and that was all Brian. The Disney thing really chaps my arse because I'm a huge fan of the purist Disney stuff (the traditional animation) when the creative juices are flowing. Not just the old stuff either, I think that with a few notable exceptions (Atlantis, Treasure Planet) Disney's trad animation releases have been high quality since Great Mouse Detective and Little Mermaid, so that's a pretty good run after hitting a rough patch with drek like Black Calderon and Oliver and Company prior to that. But the Disney/ABC/ESPN corporate juggernaut franchise acquisition stuff just blows. Muppets is a hot comodity - buy it. Lyric Street Records is hot - buy it. Nickelodeon's "Doug" is hot - buy it. Mirimax, Baby Einstein company, Fox Family, Saban - buy 'em all. Meantime, the beancounters run everything and there's not enough creativity to drive all of that. Nor is there much concern for creativity so long as they're the only game in town. The result is homoginzation and dilution of all of it, and Disney ends up not paying attention to core capabilities and endes up shooting themselves in the foot by closing one of the two trad animation studios. I'll do it for you... [/end rant] On a side note...Brian's voice has grown on me over the years, but he'll never have the same chemistry with Frank Oz. And I cried the day Jim Henson died.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 02:37 PM) That was one of the most brutal collisions I have ever seen. It take second place to watching Robin crush his ankle. Thanks for putting that image back in my head. Eeeeeee. Get well soon, Cam.
  9. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) I think you deserve a 'Captain Obvious Award' for that one....
  10. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 04:29 PM) Actually, my roommate did a report on the incident and said that the leading replacement name from a poll was "Prarie Fire." In my book that's about as stupid a name as you could come up with. We might as well change our colors to pink and purple if that happens. That's almost as bad as the Hofstra Pride (apparently some Dutch people were pissed about the Flying Dutchman ). It's not that stupid...at least we'd be named after a shot. Tequila and Tabasco...mmmmmmm. How about the "Lincolns?" Block I could become Block L and they can all wear black top hats.
  11. QUOTE(LDF @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 10:16 PM) i believe they offered him one either way, imho, we didn't get enuf for him. \ but we are in a different era with hockey now We didn't get enuf for him, but Tallon is trying to be the good guy and move Thibault BUT ALSO get SOMETHING for him. I'm glad Thibault is happy...he busted his ass for us. 4th round pick isn't bad, though...since Tallon had no leverage at all.

  13. THIS IS A JOKE: Q: You know what the "N" stands for on Nebraska's helmets? A: Knowledge!!!
  14. You know what, Juggernaut...I used to have so much respect for you. How you would pull the numbers and analyze a player's worth. No one else really does that all too often around here. But now you are blinded by those numbers. And formulas. The world is not black and white...the world is a bunch of shades of gray...and I like it that way...and I'm not trying to figure out why that is. This is baseball...and it's not supposed to make sense. That's why we love it.
  15. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 05:36 PM) Very sad. You're whole argument hinges on the belief that what is normal outside of the month of August (calling a team & asking about a player you have an interest in) is not normal during the month of August. Well yeah, because it IS different during the month of August. You see...to trade a player on the 40-man roster...he HAS TO GO THROUGH WAIVERS. Before that...HE DOESN'T. Interesting how a man of such great intellect doesn't see the factors change.
  16. Here's a reason why most players are put on waivers during a year, but mostly now: July 31st is a non-waiver deadline, so you can make a trade W/O putting someone through waivers. August 31st is the waiver deadline, so you can still make trades, but your players on the 40-man need to pass through waivers. Agreed. What if Team A wants to make a trade, they ask for Player A, Team B says, ok, we want Player B. Team A responds by saying, "We tried to get Player B through waivers, BUT HE WAS CLAIMED!!!" Therefore, the trade, as was originally asked for, is dead. If you pass a player through waivers in August, then you ABSOLUTELY KNOW who on your 40-man roster is available to trade. As unrealistic as it sound, you do realize, that a GM may just call one day and say, "hey, do you guys want Albert Pujols, but we want two players from your 25-man-roster and one from your 40-man." This way, you KNOW WHO'S AVAILABLE TO TRADE!!!! That, to me, would be why you put MOST of your players on waivers.
  17. the A's are playing the Mariners in that last series...the M's are pretty much out of it...so they might have some minor leaguers up and playing for a spot next year. Would that be considered laying down to get the A's INTO the playoffs? You are also forgetting that the A's would still have to win...or the Indians for that matter. Stranger things have happened. In fact, I think the Royals have actually won games this year.
  18. QUOTE(3E8 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) I think we have Blum's new nickname: The Chameleon. His entrance music can be that chama-chama-chama-chama-chama-chameleon song. I like it!!! The name, not the song. Send it into Hawk and DJ today. "I loooove email."

    QUOTE(danman31 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 07:02 AM) Don't take this the wrong way, but was it a s***hole back in the 80s too? Define s***hole? It had carpeting and air conditioning...unlike Niles West. I haven't been back since the early 90's, so I couldn't tell you if it's gotten worse. It was fun hitting tennis balls onto the Edens, though.
  20. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 02:09 PM) I like Dubuque, so Iowa gets my preference. As for "icky" states? Any that are hot. I don't like the heat at all. Dubuque, except for the minute downtown area is kind of a craphole. Went there for a wedding last year... Never been to Nebraska or West of the Amana colonies in Iowa, but Iowa isn't that bad. Hilly, green, and Iowa City is nice. If I had to choose the worst state I have been in...I think it would have to be Oklahoma. If I never step foot in that state again, it would be too soon.
  21. QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 02:52 PM) spelling=hopeless The IT department just yelled at me because I spit coffee on my laptop!!!
  22. QUOTE(spiderman @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 11:40 PM) I'm just surprised that it's August 9th, and we haven't heard any names getting blocked/passing through, and that goes back to my original questions of how long will it take for a player to get through waivers, and when is a player originally put on waivers ... I read on Daily Quickie on Page 2 of ESPN.com that Jamie Moyer refused a waiver deal to the Yankees. They are out there, just not public.
  23. QUOTE(Ozzie Montana @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) Phenomanol. Ma-na ma-na, doo, doo, doo-doo-doo.
  24. Borchard could be Shane Spencer-esque...the Sox aren't going to bring him back next year (at least I don't think they will) so it's showtime. And he might just smack 10 homers in the last month and a half. If he could hit .250/10/35 I'd be happy with that production.
  25. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 09:19 PM) Clearly, you guys are not the outdoorsman. I love all these states. Iowa has big bucks. Kansas has big bucks and great catfishing. Wyoming has Elk, Trour, Mule Deer, Whitetail, etc as does Colorado. Nebraska is a great antelope and whitetail state.... Tisk tisk tisk... Illinois has Chicago where I can buy/go to a zoo and look at/eat all of the above mentioned animals.
