  1. I agree with Chaos. If the Sox can go and win both series against Cleveland, that will give them a HUGE lift going into the playoffs. I also think this is a team that is built for cooler weather. Running, bunting, sacrificing, etc. That's more how you score runs in the playoffs than in the regular season. See Marlins, Florida. D-backs, Arizona. Walk-offs are great, but most games are won on singles and sacrifices.
  2. Since when was Nebraska on par academically with ND, Michigan, UCLA, or Stanford. C'mon. If you want academics AND good football, you go to ND, Big Ten...well, some of the Big Ten, maybe Texas, Stanford, Berkeley, that's about it that I can think of. But Nebraska? I mean, you know what the "N" stands for on their helmets, don't you? K"N"owledge.
  3. Football...Illinois is numero uno. Texas is second...only because I live in Austin. After that, any Illinois team (except for NW...don't really care for them). EDIT: And Rice because my fiancee went there and they REALLY suck.
  4. Just please, for the love of god, don't make hairy beanbags.
  5. May Bea Arthur drape you in long, shoulder-padded blazers!!! Happy Birthday, wino!!!
  6. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 7, 2005 -> 08:23 AM) I fully expected some bulls*** excuses. http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/09/06/...fess/index.html Talabani: Saddam confesses to execution orders Tuesday, September 6, 2005; Posted: 7:00 p.m. EDT (23:00 GMT) Saddam Hussein's trial will begin on October 19, the Iraqi government BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Saddam Hussein has confessed that he gave orders to execute thousands of Kurds in the late 1980s, according to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani. In an interview with Iraq's state-funded broadcaster al-Iraqiya, Talabani said he had spoken to one of the Iraqi Special Tribunal judges involved in the investigation who said that "he was able to take important confessions from Saddam Hussein and he has signed these confessions and there is video and audio for these confessions." Talabani said the judge told him that Saddam confessed that he gave orders for the executions and military operations directed against Kurds in what came to be called the Anfal campaign. Talabani refuted charges that the current government was exerting political pressure to expedite the trial, saying, "The Iraqi judiciary will sentence Saddam with what it sees suitable. There is no political order." On Sunday a spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said that the first trial of Saddam would begin on October 19. Along with others, Saddam is charged in connection with a series of 1982 detentions and executions following an assassination attempt against him. Saddam has been in custody since December 2003, when he was captured by U.S. troops. The 1982 charges are the first of several Saddam is expected to face. He appeared last year before an Iraqi tribunal to hear a list of preliminary charges against him, including the 1990 invasion of Kuwait; the 1986-88 Anfal campaign against the Kurdish minority in northern Iraq; the 1988 chemical attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja during that campaign; and the suppression of the 1991 revolts by Iraq's Kurdish and Shia populations. Saddam: Yes, I did order the executions of Kurds. Talabani: WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Saddam: I like balloons. Talabani: MISTRIAL!!! Saddam: Why does this courtroom look like Idaho? Talabani: LEGALLY INSANE!!! Saddam: Poopy.

    Allergies

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Sep 7, 2005 -> 01:57 AM) Yesterday i sneezed about 50 times, so something's up. Whenever i get back to Champaign after a hiatus, my allergies flare up. I go through about a box of claritin d or benadryl a month in the fall and spring. The worst is when during class my nose just starts running, and i have to use my sleeve to stop it. It's not pretty. Are you sure it's not the breeze wafting in from South Farms? That always made me sneeze. Well, not sneeze, more like dry heave.
  8. I wonder why no one is saying that these injuries are some sort of defect. I mean, this is the second or third time he's pulled part of a tendon off a bone. I can't remember a lot of other players having the same type of injury more than once. I'm sorry he's hurt...but I wonder if this is a career ender.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 05:56 PM) But you have 6th Street, Austin City Limits, hill country, UT, shall I go on? Lucky dog. Yeah, AND Lucky Dog. I guess they have some good Chicago Style hot dogs, but I haven't been there yet.
  10. QUOTE(knightni @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 07:33 PM) It should have been titled the "All-Injury Team". Would Rosenthal be "washed-up" if he broke his hand and couldn't write? yes.
  11. According to ESPN, it's Washburn v. Beuhrle. If the rotation stays the same, it'll be Colon v. Garland on Saturday and Lackey v. El Duque on Sunday.
  12. Jeckle...the Indians are 10 games back in the loss column with around 30 games to play. I'm guessing around Sept. 20th the division will be locked up. That's two weeks from today. Magic number 17...14 days, that sounds about right.
  13. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:52 PM) If he could hit 270-280 and 30 hr's, we would make a nice player in the bigs. We shall see For the Pirates.
  14. QUOTE(JoshPR @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 05:37 PM) Don't know what the Fuzz is, He's right. All those mentioned are washed up. Of course i've seen washed up players come back to have a 2 or 3 more good years but by most part he's right. We Sox fans gotta start to learn to move ahead without Frank in the picture, he wasn't gonna play forever and he'll be 38 yrs old next season. I apreciate what Frank did for this team but it's time to move on. Nomar and Hidalgo are hardly washed up. At 32 and 30 respectively, you can't include them. Hidalgo could still put it all together and Nomar, if healthy, can still hit. And even though I love Frank, I'm inclined to include him on this list too.

    Allergies

alert ALLERGY SUFFERERS!!! Don't move to Austin. Allergy capital of the country. My poor fiancee is in her lull for the year...two weeks between the summer allergies and ragweed. There is no freeze (usually) here so it just keeps coming and coming. And now, I have Cedar fever from the juniper spores. FANTASTIC. Although that doesn't happen until December.
  16. All I can say is...s*** Happens. I know it's very hard to believe that natural selection got us from one-celled organisms to humans that can kill each other for no other reason than liking someones 8-ball leather jacket, but if you can say there was some sort of outside force that helped us along the path (which, to me, is hard to believe), then why can't you believe that mutations along the path happened? Do you disregard the chaos theory? Does everything have to be explainable? Or in a pattern? And as for life on other planets...it is arrogant to think that in this vast expanse of space, there aren't lifeforms, intelligent or otherwise, out there. As for your original question...should ID be taught in schools? Only to the point where you teach a child how to learn. I'd say, teach children what the majority of scientists believe in, but say there are other ideologies out there that they can learn about if they are interested. There isn't enough time in school to cover everyone's belief systems and history and theorems as it is.
  17. 54. And I was at the local "Lance Armstrong" 24 Hour Fitness and they have all these stats about Lance. His resting heart rate is between 32 - 34. That's freakin' amazing. Of course, his heart is probably the size of a 16" softball.
  18. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 06:24 PM) So lets take some guns and shoot at the people helping us. That helps out the relief effort. Put down the guns, stop looting or trying to take people hostage and it will only help the situation out. But to just say oh well, its the self preservation or whatever is a bit of a reach. We are human because of our capability for emotions and morals. As I said, I certainly don't condone it...but after YOU'VE been without food or water in a dome with people who are dead or dying with no working plumbing and see no help in sight...I'd think some people would do some crazy things just to get noticed. Now, I know that there are bad elements everywhere, but some people are just freaked out and feel alone, which, up until this point, they have been. I don't know where you are, but you aren't in New Orleans. So for you to say... ...is kinda cold, if you ask me...which you didn't.
  19. These are people who have waded through filth, see dead people floating/covered/in front of their eyes. These are people who have been herded into the Superdome, then to the convention center only to be left outside. These are people who have had a hard time getting food and water. I'm certainly not saying that taking pot shots at a helicopter is justified, but some of them probably aren't thinking straight. There are counselors in HOuston that are saying people didn't' want to go into the Astrodome because of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Theydidn't want to feel trapped, they didn't want to smell that horrific smell. Again, I don't condone looting or shooting or any of that general maelstrom. But, I'm not surprised its happening and would like to think that most of the people there are peace loving but want to get the eff out.
  20. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) The first step on the road to recovery is admitting you have a problem. And knowing is half the battle.
  21. Just read it on ESPN's Transactions page. Now that's what I call screwing the pooch. You know the GMs were sitting around waiting to cut him AFTER September 1st to really kick him out the door. Now no contending team can have him on their post-season roster (not that they would anyway).
  22. QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) I am a die hard fan. I am going to my 11th game tonight. But, that being said, I am angry with this team right now and this board gives fans the opportunity to vent about what they do and don't like about the team. I am sick of Ozzie's crappy third game lineups. I am sick of Uribe swinging at anything thrown no matter how far out of the strikezone the pitch is. I am sick of Damaso Marte. I am sick of Joe Crede's popups in the infield. I am sick of Paulie grounding into double plays. I am sick of Carl chasing every low and away pitch. I am sick of how we have abandoned our "smart ball" style. Other than that, I love my White Sox. There's a big difference between having an opportunity to vent and saying the Sox are done. I'm all for venting. Venting is good, it saves your spleen. But, over the top Chicken Little crap is what I can't stand.
  23. It's funny, cuz I thought it was September 1st. Don't we have another month to go? I agree Chaos. All in or all out. It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. (Sorry, thought I was back in the cliche thread.)
  24. Of all the playoff teams, none of them are perfect. Examples, the Cardinals depth in the outfield, the A's just lost Crosby for September and maybe longer, Angels need some hitting, Boston and the Yankees pitching, Astros need offense...etc. I scoured the transactions and I don't see any of those teams making trades. Sure Kenny had 2 months. In fact, he had since May since he likes to get the players he wants early. But, you can't fault him for trying...unless you're Mariotti. He probably blames the Saints for Katrina. Maybe I am a KW apologist and I would do anything I can to win a world series, but to expect the Reds or Devil Rays to do anything they can to help us win a world series is expecting WAAAAY too much. AND, this is the White Sox first losing month since August of 2004...so I would say this is a pretty successful team and it ain't over yet.
  25. Happy Birthday from the Capital of Texas...Tom DeLay's house!!! I meant Austin. Have a great one!!!
