    Colleges

Back in the late 80's when I was in HS...yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm old and stuff...we had this crazy f'ed up system where we were graded on an 8 point scale. I can't even remember how they did it, but I had a 5.6 and that was good. I think an A in an AP class was an 8...honors senior was a 7...honors junior 6, etc. It was the craziest system and stupid since no college would honor it. We still had to shift to the 4 point scale. I don't think they do that anymore, but I could be wrong. PS> Niles North was the HS.
  3. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 04:33 PM) So then why even do the dance if it's Sioux and not Illini? And if it is, in fact, true that the Seminole tribe was "paid off," good for them. I hope they're getting a good amount. Simple: There aren't anymore Illini. I believe the Sioux tribe is an offshoot of an Illini tribe. Related, but not a part of. If it was an authentic Illini dance and outfit, would that make a difference? I'm guessing that to most of the people on the no Native American mascot side, the answer would still be no. Also, I believe, at least in my case, that I know more about the Illini tribe than I would have if the U of I were called the Fighting Lincolns or the Tigers or whatever. Name dies, tribe dies some more.
  4. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 03:22 PM) News Flash. As much as I want Griffey, they arent going to get rid of him. The Ownership group is trying to sell the team, and they know that the team is worth more money with those players on it instead of prospects in the minors. Getting rid of Griffey and selling the team would not only drop value, but eliminate the already dwindling fan base. What if the new ownership group doesn't want to pay that salary until 2145 or whenever it ends? To say that for sure, when you don't know, is just plain crazy. CRAZY, I TELLS YA!!!
  5. Kalapse, I know what you are saying, but the stupidest thing he did was get caught. Sorry buddy, but I am guaranteeing you that a lot of your fav players have at one time or another juiced. That would make half of the league liars and cheaters, etc. I respect the man for coming back and taking the brunt of the fans anger. It's going to take a lot of strength (this time without the 'roids) to do that. I don't like what he did, I certainly don't condone it, but he did it, paid the price that was handed down and is being reinstated. If he gets caught again, ban him from baseball. EDIT: As for picking him up, no. But not because of him juicing, but because of the media circus surrounding him.
  6. First half record 57-29 Second half record 15-10 You see, here's the deal. If the Sox were, oh say, 8-17 in the second half, I would be upset, too. But, they are above .500 AND still leading the div. by double digits AND not playing their best baseball AND coming into a rough stretch. The team needs a boost...whether it be a bench clearing brawl (not that I would condone that) or a walk off homer like Eckstein the other night. Something to rev this team up again. It's a looooooong season, ladies and gentlemen, and it's very rare that a team doesn't go through a rough hitting or pitching or both stretch. Even the 100+ game winners don't play the best baseball every single day. Let it go, enjoy the season and relax.
  7. White Sox First Half 57-29 White Sox Second Half 15-10 No need to panic people.
  8. I have been saying this about ND since this whole mascot thing started. But on another subject...I understand where people are coming from about the Illini and Chief Illiniwek, BUT, there are no more ILLINI. They are dead and gone, killed off by whitey. But, for those of you that don't know, Illinois...named after the Illini tribe of Native Americans. So, I equate our name to the Tennessee Volunteers, named after the Tennesseeans that went to the Alamo to help. The outfit worn by the chief is a Sioux outfit donated by that tribe. The dance is also Sioux. When dressed as the Chief, he doesn't speak...not to mention, doesn't kiss babies, shake hands, rack other mascots against the goal posts, do push ups, throw t-shirts into the stands, etc. He also speaks at local schools and does charity work around the Champaign-Urbana area. Basically, my point is, considering the plight of the Illini tribe, the University couldn't be any more respectful then they are. If they want to drop the "Fighting" from the name, that would be fine with me. If the NCAA wants to drop the names like Savages, Braves, Indians, Redskins, that makes total sense to me...those are degrading. But since our STATE is named after this tribe of Native Americans...I think they should have a little leniency in this case. /end rant
  9. Would DH'ing full time have an adverse affect on Griffey's health? At least when he's playing the outfield, he can stay a little looser by running from time to time. If he's sitting on the bench warming up, then cooling down, he's more susceptable to injuries. That being said, I'd love to see a sweet swinging, healthy, lefty power hitter on the Sox.

    Six Feet Under

It lost me after season 3, but I've picked it up again. I'm enjoying this last season, so far. There aren't as many f'ed up relationships...except for Ruth. As for the flashbacks, after hearing David talk about how Nate used to protect him as a kid, the flashbacks make sense to me. Nate isn't around to protect him anymore and Keith hasn't reached that status yet. That's what I got out of it.
  11. It's really a catch-22. A news story happens, the public is interested, so they cover it more, then the news goes mainstream, then they cover it more. The public likes to see young, pretty people as much as the press. The fascination with Natalee Holloway is the same as the fascination with Michael Jackson, OJ Simpson, Scott Peterson, etc. Everything just builds upon itself and unfortunately, the media (even the 24 hour stations) can't cover EVERYTHING. It sucks, but it's the truth. Plus, ratings = advertising dollars. No money, no station.
  12. It's amazing he never finished high school. And what a rocky way to begin a career...whew. But, boy did he rebound. R.I.P.
  13. This could also be a rent-a-player. We can assure him that we are going to find a place for him next year (Yankees?) if he comes here for the rest of '05. Steinbrenner will have Bernie off his books and I think there are one or two more...although I oculd be wrong.
  14. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 06:39 PM) Bret Boone is one of the worst players in all of baseball. He is completely valueless, and the thought of a team possibly catching lightning in a bottle is all but gone with how terrible he performed for the Twins. Only if we need a second baseman in the Frontier League.
  15. QUOTE(chisoxfan79 @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 09:39 PM) I want to dedicate this thread to Jeff Brantley who said before the season we would win 72 games and what ya know he was right. w00t!!! Hey Jeff Brantley --> :fyou
  16. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 02:04 AM) But I think a large majority of voters will be voting Garland or Buehrle, with barely anyone voting for a Zito/Harden. I just don't think the A's pitcher would get enough, even with Garland and Buehrle splitting. If it was out of 100 voters (I don't know the number, just using an arbitrarty number), I think it would be something like 45, 45, and 10 if there was a split at all. It's also going to depend on how pitchers finish. If Zito keeps winning, like Santana did last year, he might pull it out. Plus, he's a former winner, which pulls some weight. If Garland and/or Buehrle finish strong, one of those will probably win out.
  17. I went to a Sox series in Milwaukee. It was '87. We stayed in the same hotel the Sox stayed in. My best friend and I wrote down how many times we saw each player. We talked to Fisk, talked to Kenny Williams, got kicked out of the Mecca, and Ozzie brought his kids and they were loud and absolutely crazy, like their dad. It was just fun. Also, three years in a row, I went to a game where Ozzie homered. Two of those years, it was his only HR. I just love going to the games, there isn't one that I can say was the absolute best.
  18. I think I would have to go with Buehrle for two reasons...one, better ERA and two, better career. It shouldn't matter, but I think it does. But, i also wonder if Garland and Buehrle would split the vote?
  19. When you're 34 games above .500 and 13 games up on 2nd place...yeah, Crede probably thought it was funny.
  20. Since when did Charles Schwab have a show on ESPN?
  21. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) You're hardcore. I've had one for a few years. Not sure exactly how long...but I am on my 4th phone. This one takes pictures. Which means I have a ton of pictures of the inside of my pockets. Some people would pay a lot of money to see pictures of the inside of your pockets. :nudge :nudge

  23. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 03:29 PM) Are the peaches as advertised? I peaches. Millions of peaches Peaches for me Millions of peaches Peaches for free.
