Roosevelt sometimes is a pain until you get to Halsted. A lot of cars, a lot of lights. Might wanna try Cermak to Ashland instead since you are already that far south.

QUOTE (SI1020 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) I couldn't disagree more. Just because a guy's name is Bowman he still has to prove himself. I just don't understand all this Tallon hate. Do people forget how long this team was beyond abysmal? Tallon did a very good job. As far as his five worst moves being so much worse than his five best, I can't see that either. It has been said by several sources that worst move number one was actually the responsibility of the man that replaced him. I say that not to absolve Tallon of the blame he deserves but to put things in a little perspective. If you've worked for a while then you know that sometimes it doesn't matter if you're good at your job or not when a new team comes in. McDonough for all his supposed marketing genius comes across to me as very arrogant and thin skinned. It won't matter one whit if the Hawks end their long Stanley Cup drought. Personally I think they are still a little short, and if they should happen to meet the Penguins in the finals next year, the result will be the same as in 1992. I wasn't saying that his name is Bowman so he has to be better. I'm saying Scotty is a better hockey mind than Tallon and if his son is like him, then he will be better than Tallon too. At the end of the season, the proof is in the pudding that's in the Stanley Cup. If the team doesn't get over the hump, then Stan should get the same scrutiny. I love me some Dale Tallon...just not as the GM.

Can we agree that this is the best nickname
CanOfCorn replied to wilmot825's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 05:54 AM) "Sudden" Sam McDowell, Juan "The Dominican Dandy" Marichal, Stan "The Man" Musial, Willie "The Say Hey Kid" Mays, Willie "Pops" Stargell, Leo "The Lip" Durocher, "Joltin'" Joe DiMaggio .... baseball used to be a gold mine for great nicknames. Sadly, it's a tradition that has gone by the wayside. All I can think of at this moment for current players is "Big Pappi". Even Hawk has kinda stopped. Can't even remember the last guy he gave a moniker. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 08:25 AM) Well, I'm sure a guy like Nix COULD play 1B, so could Dye, but neither of them are going to be particularly good over there right now. Plus with Beckham struggling a bit defensively, Fields' ability to play 3B as a backup also becomes important. This all really makes no sense. If they keep Wise and send down Fields, giving them 2 backup OF's and just Nix for the entire IF, I will not be happy. Bet you never thought you would say that Fields defense is important, eh? The only thing I can think of, is that Ozzie might want to take both TCQ and Pods out of some games. If that's the case, and Fields is sent down, you have Nix, Wise and BA that can all play the OF. Fields can't. Ozzie tends to like UT players that play IF and OF (Uribe excluded). I'm not saying it's right, that's what I thought of when they mentioned Fields being sent down.

I guess what I've been trying to ask is...after Randy Johnson, we aren't going to have another 300 game winner for a loooong time. Just by the nature of the game today. So, does that open the door for pitchers like Blyleven, John and Buehrle?

Rosenthal says we could be interested in Rios.
CanOfCorn replied to Jimmywins1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) Teahen's been much better than Rios this year and he's much cheaper. He's the better option here. But probably more expensive in terms of what the Sox would have to give up. -
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 10:14 AM) If your looking for something different, you could camp in my back yard and than walk to the games. I have snakes in the yard though. They may be cobras. Cobras can't harm el...he lives in Montana. They have killer moose up there!

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) I was really just being facetious. And in fact, I just looked, and I'm up on the year pretty much straight across as well. Last year sucked, though. I felt like Dorothy with the slippers - just keep saying "its a buying opportunity", over and over again. Warren Buffett you!

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 06:54 PM) I was reading a Time article where one of her aides/friends/advisors was saying she actually started digging on the Internet to read the dirt about her, reading liberal blogs etc. No politician actually does that or they'd go crazy. Could you imagine if Bush did that when he was president and then started whining about everything instead of brushing it off or ignoring it like he did (and like Obama does now)? He wouldn't have been able to function if he did that. They have "people" who do that for them...I'm not going to comment on Palin's intelligence, cuz I don't know her...BUT, she seems to me the perennial beauty queen. Always worrying about what other people think of her. You aren't going to make it in politics with that attitude.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 09:12 AM) Yeah, we Catholics have made up a bunch of wacky stuff. Unbaptized babies go to Limbo, but not Heaven. Folks who were mostly good in life have to take a stopover in Purgatory before going on to Heaven. Our priests are the only ones who can actually pull off the miracle of transubstantiation and all those poser Christian denominations are just going through the motions. . . On the bright side, between the options of the 11th hour deathbed confession or just buying a boatload of indulgences, even lazy Catholics throughout history have been able to secure a spot on the Heaven express. Don't forget the Pope-to-God red phone hotline!

QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 08:58 AM) Don Sutton is in. Tommy John and Bert Blyleven aren't. Those were 3 guys with longevity based statistics. .... Hell add Phil Neikro as being in. So, if Mark hangs around long enough to get close to 300 wins it's a 50-50 chance. It's a traveshamockery that Tommy John and Bert Blyleven aren't in.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) I believe in the soul. The cock, the p****, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days. Oh my.

McD's guy is Scotty Bowman, yes? Well, as much as I love Dale Tallon for the years he has given to this organization, Scotty Bowman is better. I don't know enough about Stan Bowman, but if he is half the hockey guy as his father, he'll be twice the GM Dale was. Check out the Trib today for Dale's 5 best and 5 worst things he's done. I think the 5 worst outweigh the 5 best, by a lot.

Exactly...now think about this...other than the current "HOFers" that are out there, like Randy Johnson... How many pitchers are like Mark Buehrle. Someone so important to his team for so long. Jamie Moyer, yes, but MB has had more success. Any other pitchers been the "#1" starter on the same team for so long? I'm talking about current starters. One could say Pettitte, but he had those years with the Astros. And to state my opinion...I don't know. As a Sox fan, I think he should, because he's been so important to OUR team. As a baseball fan, I don't think he's there just yet.

I believe FlaSoxxJim is a teetotaler. I believe Tex really lives in Maine or Idaho. I believe NSS lives in Beverly. I believe Ribbie and Rhubarb acted alone.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) He's said that is a possibility, not definite. And athletes who make promises like that (and his wasn't even a promise), rarely keep them. They can't leave the game. True. OK, let me re-frame this question: So, there are going to be very few 300 game winners and/or 3000 K guys from here on out, just by the nature of the game today. And, since the steroid era is for all intents and purposes, over, most pitchers probably won't be pitching into their 40's at a high plateau. So, does the Hall adjust its standards for election? And if so, would a consistent pitcher, who was probably the best pitcher of the era FOR HIS TEAM, get more consideration?

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) But isn't faith a conscious decision made? Isn't that an action, albeit a passive one? For hypothetical sakes, let's say the Hindus are right. Say we get reincarnated. Since no one here(to my knowledge) is Hindu we shouldn't count on coming back in a better state now should we? Why not? If we lived our life to the same standards, but worshipped in different ways...why should the non-Hindu be punished?
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) Well, with that logic should murderers and rapists be absolved because after all, they were just using their free will? That's going a little too far...I wasn't talking about those kinds of actions...I'm talking about faith. I was given the opportunity to take it all in and come up with my own conclusions...and then, after all that, I go to wherever I'm going and find out I'm wrong and I'm punished??? Yeah, I can't and won't believe that.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:16 PM) Right now? Heck no. If he pitches like he does, until he's about 41 or 42, then he's got a decent shot. If he does that, and wins a Cy somewhere in there, I say he's probably in. He's just really good, he has a WS ring already, is only 30, has a low effort and highly consistent motion (longevity), he's a great citizen and a gamer, he's stuck with one team (so far), and he's not reliant on velocity that would diminish over time. He's Jamie Moyer, but better. So, as I said, if he keeps being MB until he's 41, maybe gets a Cy Young in there somewhere, he's got a good shot. But this is what I'm asking...he isn't going to pitch until he's in his late 30's early 40's, at least that's what he said. And after the current crop of pitchers who hit 300, it's going to be a long time, so, do you think the Hall is going to have to change it's criteria? Look at other aspects. Obviously, he's not dominant like Koufax, who had a short, but incredible, career. Not to mention the steroid era...because, if MB is ever found positive, I think he should get his money back.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) To put it simply: Free will gives you the choice to believe what you want, whether to have faith or to not, but if you choose not to believe and then end up being wrong, why should you be rewarded? Plus there's the whole Christian baptism thing but that's more of a man-made argument. It's not a question of being rewarded...it's a question of having free will. Seems kind of odd that a person would be given something to use as he/she sees fit only to be told at the very end that they were doing it wrong.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) After all, we're all just a clusterf*** of cells running around that evolved from a cesspool of rocks. Ameobas I'm sure came from rocks. Or something. Besides that, we sure do have a lot of free will from evolving from amoebas, don't we? Proving or disproving the exisitance of God is something that can't be done from a scientific viewpoint, so I wish people would stop trying to view it from that prism. You either have faith that there's a God or you don't. It's your choice. I don't condemn people for thinking one way or the other, but just hope you're not on the wrong side of it the day you die. Wanna get the opinion of someone who has faith there's a God...so, if there is one, why would said God give us free will to decide whether or not we have that faith? And if so, why would someone that doesn't believe be punished for exercising their free will? Because, if there is a God and I am punished for not believing, then free will is a hoax and there's really no purpose to life other than total service to that God. And please, none of the..."serving people is serving your God" stuff...serving your fellow man should be done regardless of belief in a higher power. Discuss.

Got a question of the most boring day of the year. But it is related to Buehrle (mods, feel free to break off into new thread, if needed). Is Mark Buehrle a Hall of Famer? OK, so he won't get to 300 wins or 3000 strikeouts and he's only been in the top 5 of Cy voting once... But, let me give you some stats off the top of my head: - Been more or less the #1 starter for the Sox since 2001 - Double digit wins in ever season he's been a starter - Lifetime ERA of 3.79 - More than 200 IPs in all but his first season, which was mostly as a reliever anyway - Top 10 in ERA 4 times - Won a World Series. - Been to 4 AS games - He is currently eighth all-time in wins and innings pitched by a pitcher in a White Sox uniform. - Started every season opener from 2002-2006, 2008-2009 - Threw a no-hitter I know his career obviously isn't over and a lot of things can happen, but let's say MB continues on his same pace until he retires. Here's why I ask...of course if you look at the pitchers that are currently or will shortly be in the Hall, MB doesn't stack up. BUT, how much cache does a player get for the little known stats? Also, the criteria is going to change. Do you think the Hall will look at the fact that he was the White Sox best pitcher for so long? Discuss.
