QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 1, 2013 -> 12:23 AM) Absolutely not. I think he will be nearly worth his contract in 2014, once he gets to 100% healthy. If you can get something for him then maybe you do it, but letting him go for nothing would be an awful decision IMO. Maybe being "nearly worth" his 14.5 million dollar contract isn't exactly enticing.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 11:10 PM) Keppinger, Ramirez, and Danks almost 100% will get claimed. Dunn is likely to get claimed, Rios is unlikely to get claimed. Konerko also probably doesn't get claimed. Ill be shocked if Danks is claimed

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 10:57 PM) What, no Illini fan comments? He's also now heading east to prep school... Hearing it would be a HUGE turnaround if he qualified to play next year at UL. Also, Quintin Snider who was previously committed to UL and a borderline 5 star, decommitted an hour ago. Expect OSU and IU to be serious options. Why would they comment im sure we will still take him as would IU if he's eligible -
If some team inexplicably claims Danks, and the option is to dump him for nothing at all outside of complete salary relief, do you do it? My pipedream thread.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 10:47 PM) His WAR of .1 would tie him for 38th among LF and and 36th among CF. His D is bad. We should have moved him His defense is the reason for his .1 WAR, further so if that is position adjusted. That's making the argument for why he should be in LF.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox
Buehrle>Wood replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yeah, Law doesn't hate the Sox. He's just completely awful at his job when it comes to them. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:08 PM) De Aza doesn't have the offense to play left. Yea, he's passable when we rebuild, but when your corners have no power, your deficient. De Aza would make for a well above average offensive left fielder this year. His slugging would put him 9th among LFers. He could be potentially defensively elite there, which would help even given the position.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:00 PM) There would definitely have to be some shuffling for that to happen because we have Rios, De Aza, Garcia and Viciedo for just 3 OF spots. If the plan is to compete next year, and I'm not sure it is, I'd go with Granderson. Trade Rios or Viciedo for a 3b piece. Sign AJ and a couple relievers. Still have tons of cash to blow on another nice piece. Still not the best team, but something I can see them doing.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 08:58 PM) It would make no sense to have Granderson in CF and De Aza in LF ADA is a much superior defender I wouldn't have guessed that. What metrics are you using?

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) Question for those down on the deal......... if Avisail can handle MLB centerfield, does that completely change your view of this thing? That's a jolt of value even if he just develops into that high average/OK power type that some are fearing for the corner OF spots We desperately need a CFer so De Aza can be a very good left fielder. That would be huge.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:43 PM) Seriously? An A+ for Boston? I get the others, I get a positive grade for the Red Sox, but a perfect 1 Not necessarily perfect but close. Perfect if Peavy avoids injury. They sold high on a pretty bad baseball player. It was the the equivalent for them to signing Jake Peavy on a friendly contract in the middle of the season to add to the pennant run. The only thing they risked is cash, which they should have plenty of.
-
I dont know I think a C is a fair grade if you're grading the deadline alone. The Peavy deal certainly didn't wow anyone but it was still decent to good. Nothing else of note. I'd give the Red Sox an A+, the Cubs a B, the Tigers a D+, the Pirates a D, and the Rangers a F. PS: espn david.schoenfield Fans of every team think their prospects are better than any other team's. Except the White Sox. Lol so true.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:30 PM) I get the sense that the team really hated AJ. I get that from Reed plunking him at the first opportunity and JP and MB not wanting to pitch with him. Maybe their dislike for him rallied other guys. We're bringing AJ back next year.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:17 PM) Since this has become the deadline catch-all, the biggest loss amongst the whole deadline is not getting anything for Lindstrom. Even an organizational player is worth more than his production the rest of the way Someone made the point he's probably worth keeping for our starting pitching's sanity.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 07:38 PM) Just because a contract is non-bad doesnt mean you cant make a wrong move in taking it on. The Red Sox have taken on a 32 year old guy with recent injuries and a lat surgery that historically is off everyone's map. Last six starts, as a whole, looking so-so to below so-so. So they are taking some risks just like the Sox are betting Avisail is more monster than just-tools. Yeah the Red Sox took the least risk while getting the best player. Really great deadline for them. -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 07:27 PM) If it was really as good as you hyberbolized more teams would have been willing to take it on and that was not the case. Everyone else wanted Sox to pay part of it. Lots of contenders this year not exactly with the highest payrolls and they valued that more than Peavy's salary and the prospects they would have to give up get him. Surprising number of teams willing to stand pat even valuing their prospects over winning now. So it seems when everyone was saying it's a sellers market and I was saying it's a buyers market, the buyers are winning atm. How is that hyperbole? I've never ever heard someone say his contract is bad. Maybe they don't have the money for it now but that still doesn't make it a bad contract. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 07:16 PM) Maybe I'm naive, but today makes me believe the Sox truly do feel they can contend next year. We will find out in 40 minutes but always felt that was the plan. It is nice that we are swimming in money and our rotation will cost less than 20 million next year. I'm guessing we add a bunch of midlevel free agents.
