  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 06:14 AM) You know how there are some stats for defense which in 2000 started saying that Jose Valentin really wasn't that bad of a defender despite all the errors? The stats were the problem. When you have a stat which tells you something which is simply nonsense, at some point, it's showing you something odd about the metric. Vaz has been no where near as good as Buehrle, not even mentionning that like 20% of the runs MB gave up came in 1 inning. No, I don't know of anything about 2000 and Jose Valentin, that's not what we were discussing. I merely posted a brief statistical analysis of the two pitchers. Earlier in the thread the comment was made that Vazquez was the Latino version of Buehrle, in terms of this year, he was not far off. Which stat that I posted was "simply nonsense"? Did you even read my post? Or just quote the last line of it?
  2. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 05:28 AM) Just curious, how exactly is ERA an overrated stat, especially for starting pitchers? A stat that tells how many runs a pitcher normally gives up that are his fault is overrated. I don't quite understand that. As far as I'm concerned, you must look at ERA and WHIP for starters, because they are by far the two most important stats for pitchers. If we're talking relievers here, that is completely different. Marte had a 3.71 or so ERA last year, but he was shaky as hell, particularily in the second half, as his second half WHIP was around 2.00, and his WHIP on the year was around 1.70. ERA is overrated because it takes situations where fielding deficiencies or decisions by the players in the field and lumps them in as the fault of the pitcher. Fielding Independant Pitching (FIP) is a much better choice for pitcher evaluation because it takes into account only strikeouts, hit batsmen, walks, and home runs. these are things that for all intents and purposes are solely the result of how the pitcher pitches. for starters, read this http://www.tangotiger.net/drspectrum.html Furthermore, if you look at some of the numbers: Buehrle http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/stats/pl...hrle&firstName= http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/buehrma01.shtml 115 ERA+ 4.65 FIP 1.32 WHIP 4.0 K/9 1.19 HR/9 2006- 19 Win Shares, 39.6 VORP, 6.2 WARP Vazquez http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/stats/pl...astName=Vazquez http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/vazquja01.shtml 91 ERA+ 3.77 FIP 1.35 WHIP 7.0 K/9 .81 HR/9 10 Win Shares, 39.9 VORP, 6.1 WARP It's probably a discussion for another thread but....Vazquez has actually been slightly better than Buehrle this year.
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:36 PM) Difference in era is more than a full run. Oh, and another thing....Buehrle has a brain. EDIT: And if we're talking about their careers, Mark's era is over a half run better when he's been pitching the AL his whole career and Javy has been pitching in the NL for most of his. ERA is an overrated stat. No we aren't talking about their careers, the OP was talking about this year.
  4. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:26 PM) Eh, similarities are bound to happen between pitchers. But I can think up two different spots where they differ greatly: strikeouts and ERA. Mark is simply better at getting through an inning unless it's error-induced; Javier goes crazy. I disagree, the numbers of an "ace" and a #5 shouldn't be so similar.
  5. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:02 PM) Uh, no, not really. That's a really bad comparison. I agree that comparing Buehrle and Vazquez is silly, their numbers are surprisingly VERY similar.
  6. QUOTE(Allsox @ Jul 11, 2006 -> 09:17 PM) Check this out. It's awesome TNT will carry some games as I love the basketball coverage! Sucks though Fox will still carry the World Series :puke The Fox broadcast network and the TBS cable network have approved seven-year deals with Major League Baseball to televise weekend games during the season, the entire first round of the playoffs, plus one of the two league championship series, the All-Star Game and the World Series, Bloomberg News reported today (Tuesday), citing three people familiar with the negotiations. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Under it, Fox would broadcast 26 Saturday games ( up from the current 18 ), while TBS would carry 26 Sunday games. TBS would carry the American and National League first-round playoffs, sharing them with sibling cable network TNT. Fox would continue to air the All-Star Game, the World Series and either the American or the National League championship series. The other series is still up for grabs. Further details are expected to be announced before tonight's All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. link?
  7. Liriano in. Since he worked 6 yesterday and is starting Friday Ozzie made the decision to add Liriano to the roster in his place.
  8. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 05:16 PM) IF I even watch I'll defenitely have the TV on mute. Berman with that fake-ass annoying homerun call of his makes me want to rip my hair out. They should let Ernesto Jerez call the Derby.
  9. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 03:34 PM) I figured since we have one of our own representing us this year, we ought to have a thread in PHT to discuss it. I really think Dye is gonna take this thing home. Dye has no chance, a lefty will win this.
  10. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 11:51 PM) God hates us No, we can't bunt or execute at all for that matter.
  11. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 08:54 PM) We'll see how he fair's against the big 3 next inning pal. Down in order in the 9th, book it.
  12. Crede, Uribe, Konerko, Dye all look s***ty at the plate tonight.
  13. QUOTE(Chisox_fan @ Jul 7, 2006 -> 09:22 PM) Does anyone know if they are selling the shirts at the park? I'm heading to the game tonight and would love to pick one up. Seems they are for Sox Pride Club members only..... "I Punched A.J." t-shirts Did you show your Sox Pride and "Punch A.J." for the 2006 Final Vote? If so, show the world and order your own "I Punched A.J." t-shirt! Remember, you have to be a Sox Pride Club member to purchase these t-shirts!
  14. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 06:26 PM) I have 4 tickets for tonight...$125 face value, with parking pass. Will sell for $75. Any interest? They would need to be picked up by 4pm from Oakbrook Terrace, or after 5pm in Stickney. Section 113, row CC (3rd row). Mods, please don't move, I have gotten no response from the ticket exchange. PM sent.
  15. I'm 100% confident in BA in the outfield and I unlike most Sox fans won't be happy with a .250 average....I would be happy with a .225!
  16. I'm not concerned about the Tigers, we've proven we can beat them, and those head to head games is where the division will be decided. The Twins 18-1 record over their last 19 is a bit misleading. They are playing well but they have beaten up on the same teams the White Sox and Tigers have. It is not just "bad luck" or a coincidence that they are still 10 games back after playing the best baseball they will play all year. After we get back to divisional play things will even themselves out and I expect the Sox to pull ahead.
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 1, 2006 -> 09:59 PM) What was that? Contribute something, then get back to me, thanks. You continue to embarrass yourself, I'm done with you.
  18. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jul 1, 2006 -> 09:06 PM) Wouldn't that be kinda bogus to throw B-mac into the rotation mid-season when he's just now settling into his role in the 'pen? I say no. Only because his future is in the rotation, I think getting him in there while he is throwing the ball well is a good idea.
  19. QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Jul 1, 2006 -> 08:42 PM) Like b****ing about people b****ing. EXACTLY. This guy cracks me up.
  20. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 1, 2006 -> 08:41 PM) I love BMac and all but if he's suddenly thrown into the rotation anytime soon, he's going to struggle. It's pretty damn hard for a guy to go 3 months adjusting to a relief role and then suddenly have to switch it up and be a starter again. I agree with this. I would just rather see him in there right now than Vazquez. I really don't think of Javy as a 5th starter, I guess I have to, it's just that his stuff/potential is so much higher. I really don't think we brought him here with the mentality that he would serve as an adequate 5th starter, I think he was brought here to solidify our rotation in such a way that we didn't have anything lower than a "3rd" starter in terms of quality. It's just frustrating with him right now.
  21. We definitely don't deserve to win this one but let's see if we can't steal it.
  22. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jul 1, 2006 -> 07:59 PM) For a guy hitting .170, not getting the bunt down is unacceptable. Unf***ingacceptable. I'm just about done with this experiment. I agree.
  23. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Jul 1, 2006 -> 07:59 PM) what step is the next step after winning a world series? It's a different year, different team. This is the exact type of attitude that keeps teams from winning back to back.
