QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) That's not how it works. They would have to offer arbitration first. If the Sox then submit a $6 million figure in arbitration and Dye asks for $15 million, the arbitrator will figure if Dye is worth more or less than the $10.5 million middle mark of the 2 offers. If he thinks Dye's fair market value is $10,500,000.01 or higher, he would win. He will get $10-12 million easily if he accepted arbitration. You would just hope he signs with someone before you have to determine whether to offer it or not, or be prepared to pay. The main reason that I think KW will offer arbitration is because of the article in the Trib stating that KW was going to sleep on the decision about whether or not the draft picks he'd get from losing Dye were more valuable than the Red Sox package.

QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 05:18 PM) It is not BS when that is what everyone is looking for right now. Seriously, name one time that is not looking for/holding on to prospects. Everyone is looking for them right now because of the price of all other players. You get ridiculous Zito contracts and they realize they cannot afford to pay for all of these players. So, everyone goes and looks for the cheap, magical, cure. They have to now find those wonders that suddenly pop up and can play because they have priced themselves out of everything else by making the contracts too large. The Brewers gave up 3 of their top 10 pitching prospects in order to get a 2 month rental for a set-up man.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) Dye can't run in the first place. What a lot of insiders are saying is the Sox aren't going to offer Dye arbitration. If that's the case, Pena and $$ is the way to go. Why wouldn't the Sox offer Dye arbitration? Don't you have to offer something like 80 pct of their salary from the year before? I'm sure in a worst-case scenario, we could afford like 6 million on him next year.

QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 05:11 PM) I think that it is more of a issue of how ridiculously overpriced propects are right now. That's such bulls*** though....it's such an excuse being stated by KW. Milwaukee and Atlanta had no problem giving up highly rated prospects for players. KW is HORRIBLE at trading veterans for prospects, end of story. I'm not looking forward to the excuses we'll hear in the press tonight if nothing happens.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) I can't see him ever putting up anything higher than a .650 OPS, no this 93 AB stretch has not convinced me that he's a competent major league leadoff man. If the Sox expect to contend next season I really don't want to see Jerry Owens and his twig arms at the top of the lineup. Having Pods, Erstad, or Owens leading off for the 2008 Sox would be a great start to our run at getting 5th in the AL Central.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) Delcarmen is off the table, and whoever thinks he's mediocre must really think there are at best 4 or 5 decent pitchers alive. A strikeout an inning a WHIP of 1.00, an ERA of 2.70 and he throws as hard as anyone on the White Sox. Yeah he sucks. Why would KW trade a guy hitting .230 making $7 million for him? The only chance we get Delcarmen possibly in a deal is if they get Gagne.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 04:28 PM) After tomorrow if we made this trade. It should be Owens in CF, Sweeney in RF, and WMP in LF. Pods should be either traded for a class A prospect or designated for assignment, Erstad should be designated for assignment. Like that will ever happen, given the way this horrible baseball season has gone?
-
Milwaukee is trying to get Gagne. If they got him, I wonder if we'd see the Dye for Turnbow deal discussed again. That would be just a horrific trade.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:56 PM) Funny how all the Contreras talk died-with his arm I hope they are not taking valuable time trying to unload him or it died when Ozzie decided he would let him try and allow as many runs as possible every outing instead of trying even a little to salvage some respect for his ability.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) Also according to Levine the Mets, Dodgers and Phillies are all very interested in Garland. The Sox are asking for the top 2-3 prospects from each's farm system, a top pitching prospect MUST be included. Nothing new really. Please no new trades with the Phillies. The Dodgers/Mets would be great trade partners though.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 03:44 PM) Well, I am now convinced that absolutely nothing will happen. Which would only solidfy my feeling that KW is not the right man to lead this semi-rebuilding project. He's never been good at trading veterans for minor leaguers.
-
Why in the world would Boston want Dye to sign an extension?
-
I can't wait to not trade Dye, because we had unrealistic expectations of his value, and get two compensation picks that allow us to draft another Miami of Ohio pitcher and a cheap signee.
-
5 hours until the deadline. It would be a bad day for this organization if they don't make any moves.

QUOTE(frankie5angels @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:54 AM) Hey fathom where did you hear that? Just curious. Also did you hear anything about Macowiak being dealt tomorrow. Chicagosports.com

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:43 AM) I'm assuming that mound didn't do any damage and he will be fine of course. I just really don't want to see Pods, Erstad or Owens leading off next year, at least Bourn has some real talent. Bourn's fast, that's about it. He had a terrible OPS his last year and a half in the minors. If we got him in a deal for Dye or Contreras, that's one thing. But no way should he be the main player in a deal for Garland or Vaz.
-
KW's going to sleep on the Dye/Boston deal tonight, and see how he feels tomorrow. The Red Sox substituted a prospect into the equation instead of Masterson or Delcarmen. KW's going to see if he feels the two draft picks are more valuable than the package.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:39 AM) I definitely don't want to deal Vazquez but if the deal started with Bourn and Carrasco I'd definitely have to think about it if I were KW. Bourn got hurt tonight, and he's nothing special anyways.
-
I think a more likely deal would be Garland and Dye for Kershaw, Hu, and Meloan. The Dodgers aren't trading Kemp.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:35 AM) Those players may very well find themselves back. Yet, I'm just going to create a signature assuming Williams realizes the state of our farm system, and the possible package Garland could receive, and just wish him farwell right now. That way, when I wake up tomorrow afternoon I can just add in the name of whichever players were acquired. No doubt a tremendous package. How's that for high expectations? The reports that the Phillies want Vazquez worry me, as those two teams have no problem finalizing trades.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:35 AM) Wait till he is our starting CF next year with Pods in Left. It will be like groundhog day. Just root for them to both continue sucking the rest of the year.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:13 AM) Beane is going to beat us to the punch on this. Unlike Williams, Beane doesnt have distaste for spinning a pitcher for some prospects. KW will balk at it, or try to get one major league ready guy who doesnt have the ceiling of a few AA/AAA guys that might be a year away. We have a need at SS, and we have a team that has a block with Furcal over Hu. And we will get the privilege of watching him, and a few others Oakland A us to death when we go out that way. I have a bad feeling, that KW will lack the guts to pull the trigger enough to do this right. It will be half assed and we will be out of this for a long while. The right moves, and you have to give up talent to get it, will allow us to rebuild quicker. Garland must go. If Garland doesnt go, then KW better sign him to a long term deal. Because if he is just going to dump him for peanuts next year because garland wont go for the hometown discount. Great post

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 01:51 AM) The Dodger affiliates radio said Kershaw isn't hurt, but the organization wanted him to not get too many innings. Haha, he's getting traded.
-
Dodgers want Blanton right now....and I'd love to get Kershaw for anyone on our team.
-
Kershaw and Loney for Konerko? A man can dream, can't he.
