Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:00 AM) Note I said his ceiling is comparable to Gary Majewski. Minor League relievers are a dime a dozen to a point. Losing such a player is not a huge deal. Some will work out. Some won't. Didn't R. Meaux have great numbers last year?

sox in run for soriano
QUOTE(korntownballa @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:34 AM) he [podsednick] is becoming a liability on the field and isn't producing the way they expected the table setter to ----------------------------------- are you kidding me? podz is actually having a better year at this time then he did last year (except for the SB).. he has more HR, more RBIs, about the saem BA, and better OBP. That still doesn't mean he's a good player.

Widger Reaction
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:59 PM) That tells me the staff wasn't very happy with the pre game work he did with the pitchers prior to starts, if not more. And makes the addition of Sandy seem more likely.

Widger Reaction
Lack of game preparation is quite a strong statement by the Sox.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(CySox @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:41 PM) No, I always thought Rongey was an idiot. I personally can't stand him, and I think he is one of the worst pre/post game guys the sox have had. I wish we could bring back the guy from last year. His names escapes me right now... Duck

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(CySox @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:35 PM) please change the title of this thread. It is not official that Alomar is back. The only source we have is Chris Rongy, speculating that we got Alomar. He'd know better than anyone else. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:36 PM) I want to point out that Alomar has caught just once since May 1st for one of the Dodgers front line starters and most of his starters came from a combo of Perez (whose awful), Tomko (who has pitched surprisingly decent and was alright in Alomar's starts) and Sele (who had one good and one bad with Alomar Jr). Most of the runs allowed came from Baez who has been terrible with whoever caught up. Great research

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:33 PM) At least Thome will have another guy to party with. And Hawk will go on and on about how the 90s Indians were the greatest offense ever (that didn't include Yaz, Jim Rice, etc.). QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:34 PM) Any word on who we gave up? Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:32 PM) Alomar is one guy you would like to see whiff more often. His consistent contact a lot of times bring up the numbers 6-4-3. I can remember quite a few games where he hit into a walk-off double play. Luckily, one of those was when he was on the Indians, and it was against Foulke.

QUOTE(CySox @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:26 PM) Wasn't widger hitting like .280-.300 in his first 60 ab's? He was hitting around .300, but I think he's 0 for his last 25.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:18 PM) Better offensively, neither are great defensively, but Alomar is the much more savvy veteran, imo. I realize Widge is a veteran as well, but he's not nearly as respected around the baseball world as Sandy is. The ONLY positive I see on the field is that Alomar is difficult to strike out. I didn't think it was possible though, but we actually decrease our team speed with this deal. Hopefully Alomar will be able to do something that Widger couldn't, and that's catch the damn ball on a play at the plate.

From what I was told, we tried to get Jake Taylor to come out of retirement.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:12 PM) In what way is this an upgrade over Widger? He'll make more contact. However, I think he also likes to wear shades at the plate.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:06 PM) So let me get this straight, Alomar has a higher CERA than Widger and the Dodgers have won all of 1 game with him starting? That's just terrific. We better not have given up anyone even remotely decent in order to get him. I'm surprised the Dodgers hadn't released him yet after trading for Hall.

QUOTE(Felix @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:05 PM) SA Jr. has a 6.09 CERA this year I mentioned this earlier, but the Dodgers were 1-12 in games he started. I've seen him try to throw some guys out on the bases this year, and he was 2 hopping the ball to 2nd base.

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:01 PM) A third helping of Sandy Alomar Jr. Can anyone confirm the report that Mrs. Everett was looking at real estate in Chicago again?

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:59 PM) His game calling is very overrated. He is no better defensively than Widger, and offensively he will not continue hitting .323. He will hit .220-.240 with the Sox with little to no power, and the guy doesn't walk at all. He's brutal at this point in his career. One positive is that he's good at making contact. That could help against the Twins lefties, etc. Before freaking out about how awful Alomar is, we should all remember how terrible Widger was playing. However, I will be livid if we gave up anyone decent.

2006 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 04:47 AM) Eh, okay. Sticking with the Orioles, guess who's back? The great Fernando Tatis. Reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated. I don't like bumping anything before my time, but, for fun, here ya go. He's been gone so long that there's hardly any mention of him in the history of Soxtalk. Hurry to your waiver wire before it's too late!!! I saw him in the minors, and he has shrunk so much. I wonder why that is? Also, Brad Radke announced he'll retire after this year.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:56 PM) He is hitting .323 this year including a .500 spot against lefties. I could care less if he is 70, if he can put the ball in play fairly once and a while and call a decent game, he is an upgrade over widger. Yeah, we just went from a terrible back-up to a very bad back-up. One of the most underrated players on the Tigers this year has been Vance Wilson. He's had a ton of big hits for them, and he calls a very good game. M. Redmond has also been a tremendous back-up for the Twins this year.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:53 PM) its a back up catcher, they play like once a week. More than half of his ABs the rest of the way will be against the likes of Santana, Liriano, Sabathia, and Rogers.

Good news....the Dodgers were 1-12 when he started this year.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:52 PM) I don't even think its an upgrade. Alomar is done. What's with KW's fetish of acquiring guys named Alomar during the season? Sandy has hit alright this season with no power, but he always tails off, and you might as well have Carlton Fisk's statue behind the plate. Yep, I agree it's not really an upgrade. Oh well...lets hope this isn't the only move we make.

QUOTE(ChiSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:48 PM) Per Rongey, it's Sandy Alomar Jr. Ugh. We better not have given up anyone good for him.
