QUOTE(VAfan @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 02:15 AM) Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if KW isn't thinking very much along these lines. Of course, it depends on Jose inking an extension. Double negatives = confusing post

QUOTE(WinninUgly @ Dec 29, 2005 -> 11:38 PM) So what are the options for Count? The Sox keep him thru 2006 and let him walk. They re-sign him and trade one of the other SP's, or they move him before ST. Any other scenarios? After reading what KW said yesterday, and knowing how over-budget the Sox are right now, I think Contreras will be traded in the next month for 2 prospects, with one being a low-level starter, and the other being a near-ready reliever.
-
I'm sorry to keep bringing up this point, but I find it highly unlikely we trade someone at the deadline. Besides for the Nomar situation, you never see teams that are trying to win actually trade a main contributor at the deadline. Of course, if the Sox choke this year, then we could trade Contreras.

QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Dec 29, 2005 -> 06:48 PM) Why do I have a feeling this will work out almost exactly like it did with Garland? Big difference is that one agreed to 3/29, while the other wants about 3/39. I think that Contreras will likely get traded now. All along, I thought Garland was the pitcher that would be traded, but now that he's signed, I'll be very shocked if Contreras starts the 2006 season on the Sox.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 10:40 PM) He wasn't proposing this -- he was asking if the other poster was referring to the Garland-for-Erstad deal a few years back, instead of G-for-Eckstein. (Which I don't remember either...) Ah gotcha, I honestly didn't bother going back to read it. Thanks for the clarification.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 10:37 PM) I don't know how to react when my team is acting like a team trying to build a dynasty. Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine the pitching staff that will be together for the next 3 seasons. Just incredible. This staff will rival, if not surpass, the Atlanta staffs of the 90s. Great mix, great citizens, Wow! I agree, I think it's awesome that we're paying big money to keep our core together.

QUOTE(bmags @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 10:21 PM) garland for erstadt? Is this serious? I wouldn't trade Raul Casanova for Erstad.

GARLAND'S NOT GETTING TRADED! VAZQUEZ OR CONTRERAS ISN'T PITCHING IN RELIEF!

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 08:08 PM) Any chance KW moves Jose now or does a sign and deal with Jon? I think there's a great chance Contreras gets traded now....but what the hell do I know?
-
BTW, just my two cents, but this makes me hate the Vazquez trade now.

QUOTE(JimH @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 07:52 PM) The Sox are in control, not Garland. There are so many different things that can happen, personally I think there will be another move. Might not be Garland, but I think there will be something else coming. I would hope the Sox organization is classy enough to be upfront with Garland during negotiations. If you sign a player for the purposes of trading him, and you don't let him know that, then that's just dirty negotiating. I'm not worried about this though, cause I'm sure Garland and the Sox know exactly what they want to do.
-
In baseball, usually a player is traded prior to signing the extension, and the new team tries to work out a contract extension. Considering that Garland could possibly not want to play for the team he would get traded to, I highly doubt we see him get traded. Garland signed a 3/29 deal to stay with the White Sox....not the Orioles!
-
Contreras will almost definitely get traded now. As many on here know, I was saying all along he should be the one to get traded due to having the highest value at the time. Teams look at Contreras as a potential ace, where as Garland is more of a 2-3.
-
Yeah, you guys are right. Contract extensions are different than a FA signing. While this would make Garland more attractive to other teams, it also gives us no reason to trade him now.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 06:10 PM) It is, but to play devil's advocate, doesn't this make Garland more attractive to potential trading partners? Does this mean Contreras is on the hot seat? Are the Sox done negotiating with Contreras? It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. Sign-and-trades are not very common in baseball. As a matter of fact, I thought there's a rule about how long you have to wait before you can trade a guy after signing them.
-
This is very interesting, but very exciting also. Now, let the speculation for a Contreras trade begin!

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 05:05 PM) Hasn't Prior already said he won't re sign with them in '07? No, that seems to be a myth that's developing in order for the Cubs to justify trading him. I've heard nothing to suggest he wouldn't come back to the team.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 04:45 PM) I cant even believe this nonsense has gone on this long. Hendry will regret the day he traded prior if that ever happens. Cubs fans think they can trade Rich hill for Abreu for god sake, their prospects arent worth s*** at this point. Even Pie is overrated. I hope they enjoy another 4th place finish. I hate the Cubs (have to use that disclaimer whenever I praise any Cubs player), but Hill and Pie have a TON of value. Even though I've never been impressed by Hill, he's considered one of the best lefty pitching prospects in baseball.

QUOTE(rudylaw @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 04:39 PM) Last year we were reported as having the worst offseason by several publications and look how that turned out. Anyone who thought the Sox had a bad offseason last year was nuts (at the time). Besides the Lee/Pods trade, the White Sox made very smart moves by filling the holes they had (RF, catcher, 2b, 5th starter). In a sport where there seems to be a million rumors about what players a team is looking at, KW did a great job of making the smart choice of getting the best available catcher and 2nd baseman at the positions where he didn't have high caliber players at.

Tejada and Zito can join Furcal, Beltran, and others on the Cubs wet dream team.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Dec 27, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) How do you figure that they'd be the division winner? Their rotation gets considerably weaker without Prior and you obviously don't think that Bedard a viable replacement. I don't see how you could think they're a division winner with that pitching staff that I mentioned in my previous post. Houston, Milwaukee, and St. Louis will all have better pitching staffs, and St. Louis has a pretty strong offense to go with it. I could possibly see them finishing second if Houston doesn't bolster their lineup and Roger retires, or Milwaukee doesn't have enough of a bullpen or offense if Fielder doesn't produce right away, but I can't see them getting by St. Louis when they still have the deepest rotation in the division and the trio of Pujols-Rolen (yeah, health is an issue)-Edmonds. The Cubs bullpen is going to be much better than it was last season. As much as I dislike Pierre, he's still a much better leadoff hitter than anything they had last season. Tejada will absolutely destroy the ball at Wrigley, and it wouldn't shock me to see their 3-4-5 all hit between 35 and 40 homers. As much as I think Bedard's overrated, I've long thought that Prior's hype doesn't match his productivity. The Cubs pitching would keep them in games, but their offense would be extremely good next year.
-
If the Cubs do make this trade, I think they're in the driver's seat in the division (and no one hates the Cubs more than I do). However, I don't think this trade is going to happen. BTW, Bedard is very overrated on this site.
-
Manny's a better player than Prior, but to say Manny has more value than him right now is false.
-
In a few years, he'd be a great addition if we needed a 4th outfielder.

QUOTE(GreenSox @ Dec 24, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) He's a lot better than Eaton - and Eaton brought in some decent talent. I have yet to see a trade proposal that nets the Sox what the Padres got for Eaton. Well said. Also, there are rumors of the Dodgers trading some of the same prospects we've talked about for David Wells.
