Noah Lowry/Matt Cain (for some reason?)
Kalapse replied to DBAHO's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Dave Roberts is just plain icky. 36 years old, mediocre, making $6.5M over the next 2 years and frequently ailing from some sort of injury, he's pretty much guaranteed to spend 2 months on the DL. That's an awful lot to give up for Tim Lincecum. You're relinquishing 2 big time power threats for a young midget with a high ceiling but at the same time an equally low floor (concerns of future arm trouble). You're likely opening up 2 major holes (3B/CF) for the '09 season or possibly sooner if the frequently injured Crede and Roberts land on the DL. -
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 05:33 PM) Great job, Kalapse. So your total at the bottom of the page estimates all of the pre-arb salaries right now, is that right? No, it only includes the guaranteed money, the 7-9 league minimum players were not included. Once we get to spring training and the Crede/Uribe situations are resolved I'll add the PRE-ARB salaries to the sheet. The PRE-ARB players will account for another $2.8M-$4M total if anyone is curious as to what the "actual" payroll would be if the season started today.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 04:12 PM) I'd say the Giants are more likely to deal Linecum than Cain at this point. Would anyone do Danks / Crede for Linecum for example? But I think with Schueler pushing for Crede, something is likely to happen here. I'd imagine Rowand would be pushing pretty hard for Joe as well. The Giants could be the White Sox of the NL soon. If you wanted Cain, I'd say we'd have to deal Paul Konerko possibly (can't remember who started for the Giants at 1B this season). Brian Sabean is dumb but he's not that dumb. -
Bulin will be in goal tonight.

QUOTE(wsgdf_2 @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 02:14 PM) What are you guys talking about? RotoWorld doesn't say anything about Cain, or him being at the back end of anyone's rotation: "The Mercury News reports that the Giants will monitor Joe Crede this spring, and if healthy, there's a "good chance" they could acquire him for a pitcher. Crede is about as good as the Giants can hope to do at third base, though they're likely finishing in last place in 2008 whether they get him or take a chance on someone like Dallas McPherson. Morgan Ensberg would also be a nice alternative. If they trade for Crede, the deal could involve Noah Lowry or maybe Jonathan Sanchez. The White Sox no longer have much need for bullpen help." http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernew...;filter_teams=A They changed it, Cain's name was in there earlier this morning. It was obviously a mistake (supposed to be Lowry.) -

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) I didn't think it needed to be said that the 1st attempt would be to swap Crede/spare piece for Cain. I just don't see that happening. Like others, I just have very little faith in the rotation at this point. I also have come around to the fact that Williams is going for it all, right now, so thats how my thinking works right now. Brining in a starter who can put solid numbers(although the information 3E8 posted is interesting) would be a HUGE boost for this team. Oh, and Cain is almost 2 full years younger than Fields, so it's not like you're completely blowing up the future of the team with that move. As you say, if Crede walks, you figure out what to do with 3b then. If 2008 isn't working out in June, maybe you trade Vaz for a 3b, or whatever. There are a ton of possibilities, and I haven't even looked at the FA list for next season. Hank Blalock and Joe Crede are the only non-backup free agent 3B. Chipper and Glaus both have options that will be exercised. Matt Cain does have some frightening splits, whatever you do don't look at his HOME/AWAY splits from '06 or how he faired in hitter's ballparks last year. It's not pretty. -

QUOTE(almagest @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 01:17 PM) I'd take Lowry in a heartbeat if he's on the table for Crede. He's nothing special, but I think he could put an ERA of 4.5-4.75 up for us, and solidify the 5th starter position for a while. We'd also be getting a major-league level pitcher for a player with a history of injuries, coming off surgery, who plays a position we have filled with a better, younger player. We'd come out ahead on this one. Matt Cain for Crede? Unlikely, since Alex Rios couldn't pry him or Lincecum away from SF. Danks, Jenks, or Konerko would probably have to be involved in this deal somehow. The way I understood the whole TOR/SF negotiations was Cain/Lincecum were on the table for Rios but the Blue Jays weren't willing to pull the trigger. After a week or 2 elapsed Sabean pulled his offer off the table and went another route (Rowand I believe.) So in Sabean's mind Rios>1 of Cain/Lincecum. At least at that time. -

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 12:48 PM) How about Crede, Floyd and Broadway for Cain and Fred Lewis? Shoot, you can throw in Owens as a replacement for Lewis if ya want. Any sane GM would laugh at such an offer. I don't think they're going to give up 2 of their best young players for our crap but that's just my opinion. -

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) Suggesting Matt Cain is a joke. If the Sox managed to land Matt Cain then I'd soil myself immediately and start worshiping KW. Seriously, someone at rotoworld needs to be smacked. Cain does not belong in the back of any rotation, and his value is much higher than a Joe Crede even if he's at his pique. However, Sabean is a moron, so I won't completely rule it out. Rotoworld Link Well if you go strictly by W/L record Matt Cain is a rather mediocre starting pitcher, in fact he was one of the worst starters in baseball last season posting a 7-16 record to go along with a 22-29 career mark. Perhaps Brian Sabean is a big believer in the Russ Ortiz style of player evaluation and doesn't think much of Cain. -

STOP POSTING s*** FROM THAT WEBSITE. IT HAS NO CREDIBILITY. THEY LIKE TO MAKE s*** UP. -
I just saw a clip of Nicholson explaining his comments during some press conference. He said that he warns everyone about the side effects of Ambien, saying he once nearly drove off a cliff after taking it. So Nicholson is insinuating that Ambien may have played a part in his death.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) Something just below $7 million this year. The whole thing is confusing really. From what I understand it's $22M over 3 years w/ a handshake agreement that Philly will pitch in some cash for the 4th year if the option is exercised/vests. And the payroll according to my figures, which includes Crede, Uribe, Masset, Ramirez, Dotel, MacDougal, Owens, Richar and Floyd also assuming that all Pre-Arb players will make $400K (though some will make a bit more) the payroll stands at about $119,025,000. Then subtract the $1.5M from LAA and the ~$7.3M from Philly and the final number is $110,192,000.

Horrible, horrible, horrible news. 2007/2008 really seemed to be a breaking out period for Heath he was terrific in "I'm Not There" and if the Dark Knight trailer is any indication his performance as the Joker was superb.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jan 21, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) Rosenthal on Foxsports is saying that this is a done deal: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7703382 And according to Rosenthal the money is the same, 2 years $11M. Good stuff.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 20, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) This thread depressed me. Not looking forward to the season at all. A thread discussing the starting lineup should actually get you pretty excited it's the starting rotation that should depress you. Personally, I can't wait for the season to start, this lineup is younger, more exciting and infinitely more talented than that boring pile of crap they ran out there on opening day 2007. It's going to be a very fun lineup to watch.

Aardsma is also out of options.

Reading Comprehension 101 QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) This is barely even news. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 03:18 PM) It's news. Shingo was fun as hell to watch his first season on the South Side. Torii Hunter shaking his head in disbelief of the frisbee. He's woeful and won't even matter in the Majors... but on a Sox board, its news. "barely even" ≠ "not" If I didn't think it was news I wouldn't have posted it in the MLB Catch all thread over an hour ago. Any reaction to this greater than "hmm" is unnecessary.

Shingo signed a minor league deal with the Cubs.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 12:30 PM) Remind me again why people listen to the Score? Geesh. It's not like the Score was claiming to have any new information they were just citing the same report from the Dominican Newspaper that all the other news outlets were reporting.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) I pray this move happens, because that would be a fantastic contract. Short-term contract for one of the better relievers in the league when he's healthy. Agreed
-
So that's a $160,000 raise from last year with an opportunity to make an additional 300K sounds about right to me. This is a perfect example of how things work during a good player's arbitration eligible seasons, no matter how s***ty you play you'll almost never be forced to take a paycut in the 2nd or 3rd year of arb.

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 05:25 PM) Age has always been a releative number with Sosa anyway. For all we know, he was 16 then. Which means absolutely nothing in this case. Point is, he didn't even sign with a major league team (at the reported age of 16) until 4 years after Bonds retired.

Sammy Sosa was 12 years old when Bobby Bonds retired from baseball.
