Now that Santana is Traded To The Mets/ Go for Crisp
Kalapse replied to Cleats67's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 11:49 AM) Sure, I get what you're saying. My point, simplified, would be something like, in my estimation for every double Owens saves, Swisher has hit 2 doubles, or something like that. Owens' puss arm in CF is also going to allow the baserunner to take the extra base on balls hit softly into the gap turning some singles into doubles. Swisher on the other hand has a strong throwing arm and should be able to hold the runner to 1 bag. -

QUOTE(almagest @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 10:51 PM) Tony Womack was absolutely awful in 2001: .266 / .307 / .345. His stolen base numbers were good -- the only part of his season that was: 28SB, 7 CS. He also stunk in the NLCS and World Series. Did he even lead off most of the year for them? That team won mostly because they had two Hall of Fame caliber starters in their rotation, and because Luis Gonzales had an OPS of 1.117. Please tell me how Womack was as or more important than Johnson/Schilling/Gonzalez, or how the Diamondbacks wouldn't have won the World Series without him. Craig Counsell was the primary leadoff hitter that year. He posted a line of .275/.359/.362/.721 6 SB/8 CS. So he was terrible on the basepaths and didn't slug worth a s*** but he did post a .359 OBP. -

Now that Santana is Traded To The Mets/ Go for Crisp

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 08:54 PM) While you don't like Crisp with a .330 OBP, are you advocating having Orlando Cabrera and his lifetime .321 OBP leading off? Quentin appears to be a guy who could be good, but at this stage in his major league career, his offense has been a lot like Brian Anderson's, a guy half this board would give away. Crisp's last 2 seasons haven't been stellar, but he was pretty good the years before that when he was healthy. I think Swisher in CF full time could turn into a disaster. Who knows, if Boston really wants to move Crisp, maybe the Sox could acquire him in a 3 way trade for one or 2 of their spare parts. I think he's a much better player than Owens. If the Choice is between Cabrera - Swisher - Thome, Owens - Cabrera - Thome and Crisp - Cabrera - Thome I'll take the 1st option every time. At least this way you're minimizing the number of low OBP players you have to go through before you get to the real hitters. Adding another low slap hitter to the top of the lineup is going to solve nothing. If there were high OBP option out there for the leadoff spot I'd be all for it but there doesn't seem to be. Cabrera is either going to hit first or second next year, that much is apparent. Would you really be comfortable with a lineup that started with Crisp and Cabrera? That's an awful lot of hooey before the good stuff. Quentin may not be a proven commodity but his offensive upside and defensive abilities make him a better choice for an outfield spot than either of Crisp or Owens, IMO. I just have a problem with trading away any young talent for a guy like Crisp who has been a wretched offensive player for 2 full seasons now and praying that he returns to the player he was 3 years ago seems (everyone blames his s***ty play last year on a wrist injury yet there's no standard excuse for his '06 performance.) There's probably better ways to spend the $11M or so he's due over the next 2 years. I'm also wondering how many of the people who think Swisher will be a disaster in CF have actually seen him play the position. -

QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 06:11 PM) I am not a huge fan of Crisp, but I am wondering why so many people are quick to hand Quentin a starting position in LF if they want to win now. I do not think Crisp is the answer to any prayers, but a lineup with Quentin, Richar and Fields relies heavily on youth that is not 100% proven to perform. A veteran CF with solid defense and adequate ability to handle the bat does not sound terrible to me. I do not know if Crisp is the answer, but defensively it would be nice to see him in CF, Swisher in LF and Dye in RF. Maybe CQ is the fourth OF or maybe he starts the season at Charlotte to get to 100%. I think Fields can handle himself fine in his sophomore season and you can take a lot of pressure off of Richar by putting him and Crisp at 8th or 9th in the order, have Swisher lead off and OCab bat 2nd. Swisher is not the ideal leadoff hitter, but he gets on base and has some pop at the top of the order. Or you could just save the financial/personnel resources that it would take to acquire/pay a guy like crisp and go with Dye/Swisher/Quentin. This way you limit the amount of s***ty little slap hitters/low OBP guys in your lineup and maximize the number of potential impact bats while not losing a ton defensively (at least this way you're getting your best defensive corner OF on the field in Quentin.) And I wouldn't just hand Quentin the LF job . . . I'd hand him the RF job, JD can take left. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 06:17 PM) Just on Dye and Konerko, I think they've got at least 1 good offensive season left in them. Can someone post Dye's post ASB splits, I think they were pretty decent IIRC, after he re-signed and going thru all of the trade rumors. Yes they're getting older, but for both it was their worst season at the Cell (when especially for Dye the move from Oakland to Chicago really improved his numbers). I'd expect at least a little improvement from him. Konerko probably also. As for Thome, well I'd expect him to decline, just because of his age. 242 AB, 20 2B, 16 HR, .298/.368/.579/.947

237 G 939 AB .266/.324/.383 /.708 Why not just go with a Dye7 - Swisher8 - Quentin9 outfield? Why must there be a little b**** slap hitter in CF? -
QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) Does anyone think the White Sox will still make a run at Coco Crisp now that the Red Sox appear out of the Santana sweepstakes? I hope not.

Pavano was the #17 prospect in baseball in '97 and #9 in '98. Tony Armas was #90 in '99.

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) Does anyone remember what Pedro was traded for? November 19, 1993: Traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Montreal Expos for Delino DeShields. November 18, 1997: Traded by the Montreal Expos to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later and Carl Pavano. The Boston Red Sox sent Tony Armas (December 18, 1997) to the Montreal Expos to complete the trade.

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) Health, contact hitting, emergency catcher ability, already signed to en extension, a non Bora$ client. Brandon Inge is a dreadful contact hitter and "emergency catcher" really means nothing seeing as how he's your starting 3B. He's also 31 years old and signed through 2010 so his representation is a non-issue. You could say: Clean bill of health with no real history of injury problems, signed for another 3 years to a reasonable contract and he's been a more consistent offensive player than Joe Crede over the past 4 years.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 10:20 AM) Crede would probably be the worst third baseman in the NL East. That line used to be one of my favorites but now that Miggy has departed the division it doesn't really ring true. Crede's also better than Feliz.

QUOTE(JorgeFabregas @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 01:00 PM) Career numbers vs. NL (someone tell me if my math is off) 142 IP, 31 ER = 1.95 ERA 31/142 = 0.218 X 9 = 1.962 ERA

Aardsma Traded to Red Sox for 2 Minor Leaguers
Kalapse replied to WHITESOXRANDY's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Jan 28, 2008 -> 08:07 PM) Why does someone always have to be "blamed"? Just because an athlete has talent, does that mean you hold onto him forever just waiting for it to show? No - you move on and do what's best for your club. If he ends up turning it around in Boston, more power to him. But does that mean KW should save a roster spot for him indefinitely? If Aardsma had gone out and done his job in 2007, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It was a joke. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 28, 2008 -> 06:34 PM) especially their Gallagher, Murton, Pie, Marquis for Bedard and Roberts trades. As long as you aren't going there for opinions or inside information it's a pretty good source of information. If you're looking for a site that posts links to newspapers and sports sites and doesn't fabricate the information you could do a lot worse than mlbtraderumors.com.

Trade Uribe to BAL - sign Corey Patterson
Kalapse replied to knightni's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) He's a more natural CF, better speed, can hit for decent power. I'd rather try Corey than Jerry Owens. Better speed than who? Quentin? Sure but who gives a s*** really? Owens? No. Corey's typically in the low teens in homeruns and doesn't really hit doubles. He's also incapable of hitting anywhere higher than 9th in the lineup, is a god awful OBP hitter and is going to make at least $4M next year. Owens shouldn't be starting but even if he were to I'd take him over Patterson and Quentin's ceiling is is miles higher than Patterson's at a fraction of the price. What's wrong with a Quentin - Swisher - Dye outfield? And before you say Swisher can't handle CF I'll ask you - how many times have you actually seen him play the position? I've been going back and watching A's games from last year via MLB.tv and he's looked pretty damn adequate to me. -

What does Corey Patterson bring to the table that justifies benching Quentin? Corey Patterson isn't all that good at baseball. -
sox working on extensions for both Jenks and Cabrera
Kalapse replied to chisox2334's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) Why would that be foolish? Top caliber closers dont exactly grow on trees. I think its more foolish to extend Ocab, I would like those draft picks that he should bring. He's under team control for 4 more years, there should be no rush to guarantee him any money beyond 2008. Considering the volatility of the closer position in general as well as Jenks' history of arm trouble it would be foolish to guarantee $30M+ to him just so you can buyout his first year of free agency. -

QUOTE(chisox2334 @ Jan 25, 2008 -> 07:07 PM) as in written in blog it refers to newspaper if ya didnt read it. Also, said they made calls kenny willams which haven't been return. I believe w sox are looking at all options inclusing freddy garcia to be ready in june. I dont think w sox will be having both danks and floyd as 4th and 5th starter. They are worried and why they are even looking. So it's wait and see apoorach. Sure they claim to have gotten the story from the Herald but they totally fabricated the information. Why in the hell would Kenny Williams return the calls of some dumbass who writes a deliberately inaccurate, silly little weblog on blogspot.com? -

Please stop posting things from that website, if you want to look up the Daily Herald article that they're referring to that's cool but please don't lend credence to anything posted on that blog, it is not a credible website. Just as further proof that the blog in question is full of s*** here is the excert they're referring to: That's from Scot Gregor's column today in which he tries to answer some of the questions Williams will be asked at Sox Fest. No where in that article does Gregor even hint that Kenny Williams is actively perusing Freddy Garcia. ^horses***^ -
QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 25, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) I have a question about your service time field. If i'm reading it right, you say Richar, Fields and Owens have .085, .136 and .147 service time, respectively. Now, the way i interpret those numbers would be they have 8.5%, 13.6% and 14.7% of a season under their belt. Over the course of a season that means 14, 22 and 23 games. Am i just being retarded? Or do those calculations not make sense? I'm just wondering. I think this is a great spreadsheet, not trying to critique, just trying to find out information. Ok I'll do my best to explain this. A service number is not a decimal it's just a simple way of displaying a player's total service time. A guy like Gavin Floyd who has a service number of 1.045 has 1 year and 45 days of service. In order to earn a year of service a player must spend 172 DAYS on the team's active roster (I'll explain what constitutes 172 days in a second) so when a player reaches a service number of 1.172 the number changes to 2. A player can not earn more than 1 year of service in any given season, a player can start earning service time on the first regularly scheduled game of the season through the final regularly scheduled game of the season (playoff games, minor league service and minor league DL do not count but suspensions and major league DL time do count.) If a player is optioned to a minor league affiliate for a period of less than 20 days then said player will earn the service time for those days spent in the minors. The day a player is sent down will count towards his service time but the day he is called up will not count. For example Josh Fields' service number coming into the 2007 season was 0.022 since he was called up on Sept 10 2006 and stayed through the final game of the season Oct 1 2006 (the day he was called up doesn't count so he earned 22 days of service.) Fields was called up on June 6th 2007 and stayed through the final day of the season Sept 30 2007 bringing his total service time to 136 days or 0.136.

Is Juan Uribe's $4.5M 2008 salary going to keep KW from going after a player whom he believes will make the team better? Is Juan's salary going to be a financial burden? If the answer is no (which I believe is the case) then who gives a s*** how much he's making?
