  1. QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 12:04 PM) Maybe you should put asteriks by Guillen and Byrd as they now are caught with the HG/steroid scandal. Will the Sox still pursue JG? Hed be cheaper but that baggage history comes back to haunt him. I doubt the Sox would have made an offer to Guillen anyway and the steroid thing probably eliminates him from KW's mind.
  2. A couple decent updates today. The Indians picked up the options on 3 pitchers and the Red Sox re-signed Schilling.
  3. Another huge drawback to Wilson is his contract, it's not pretty. 2008: $6.5M 2009: $7.25M 2010: $8.4M club option w/ $600K buyout That's a whole lot of money for a player who's really not very good. 2 years, $14.35M guaranteed. That's steep.
  4. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 10:57 AM) Holy crap, I just looked, and he's actually right. Greene's OPS last year was .759, and his career best is .795. Wilson put up a .790 last year, and has a career high of .794. Greene has kept his above .700 most years, and yeah there's the Petco difference, but yowza. Greene did put up a .841 away from Petco last year, which is something, but the quesiton is how much you trust home/away splits to determine what a guy will do when you move him. It's more about consistency. Jack Wilson has been in the league for 6 full seasons in 4 of those seasons he posted an OPS+ in the 70's or lower the other 2 were above 100. Khalil Greene has 4 full seasons 2 of them he posted a mid 90's OPS+, another was an even 100 and his first full season was 114. IMO there's a HUGE difference offensively between the two.
  5. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 10:48 AM) How do you figure Greene is a significantly better hitter than Wilson? I'm not a huge stats guy, but Wilson is a career .269 hitter, trending up. Greene is .254 for his career. Their walk rate is basically the same. Greene strikes out a ton more than Wilson. Their career on base % is identical. If you're looking at their career lines then you'll notice a near 70 point difference in SLG and a 22 point difference in OPS+ (HUGE) both in Greene's favor.
  6. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 09:07 PM) True, but Garland will get better if he gets away from USCF. The Cell is not the problem: '07 HOME: 3.78 '07 AWAY: 4.76 '06 HOME: 3.97 '06 AWAY: 4.90 '05 HOME: 3.56 '05 AWAY: 3.44 '04 HOME: 5.27 '04 AWAY: 4.61 '03 HOME: 4.16 '03 AWAY: 4.87 '02 HOME: 4.00 '02 AWAY: 5.16 So yeah, he's been a high 3 ERA pitcher at home for the past 3 seasons but he's been a high 4 ERA pitcher on the road for the past 2. Jon Garland's career numbers will never be comparable to Kevin Brown's unless he starts stacking up sub 3 ERA seasons real soon (ain't gonna happen) but if he just wants to become a better overall starter than what he is now then he needs to avoid the huge lopsided losses that he seems to have on the road. He pitches in one of the best hitter's parks in the game but that's not the reason why he's only a league average starter.

"No Country for Old Men" looks damn good. The Coen brothers have struck out with some of their recent projects but this one looks like it could be special.
  8. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:19 PM) If this is Miggy we're talking about, then I would assume then Marlins would then trade Garland to the Mariners or Dodgers and try to get some of their premium prospects so it'd have to be a 3 team deal. And we'd probably have to give up one of ours as well. Gio Gonzalez perhaps? Try 3.
  9. Laurence Holmes mentioned Emil Brown as a guy the Sox are targeting in free agency. The only problem is; from what I can figure Emil Brown is not a free agent, he still has 1 year of arb eligibility remaining. I suppose KW could be looking to make a trade for the 33 year old Brown. Not exactly an exciting proposition.
  10. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 12:37 PM) I've got Jenks down for 4. I don't think he's a Super Two. He came up in July '05. Played two full seasons. Shouldn't be arb eligible until after this season. I believe this is true. He's under White Sox control for another 4 years.

Roberts had a .377 OBP last season, stole 50 bases and was caught 7 times. In 2005 he posted a .902 OPS.

1 guaranteed year remaining on his deal but there are 2 team options as well. 2008: $5.25 million 2009: $8.25 million club option w/$2.5 million buyout 2010: $10 million club option w/$1.25 million buyout

The names Gonzalez, Egbert, Danks and De Los Santos have undoubtedly come up in those talks.
  14. Levine is reporting that both the Sox and Cubs have talked to the D-Rays about Crawford some time in the past few days and talks will continue during the GM Meetings. I sure hope people haven't grown attached to Gio, Egbert, Danks or DLS.

He just doesn't generate much velocity with his throwing arm. Arm strength just doesn't come naturally for some people.

QUOTE(max power @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) Is damon's arm that bad, like pods bad? MUCH worse than Podsednik. Rondell White, Juan Pierre and Johnny Damon are probably the 3 worst OF arms I have ever seen.

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Joe Crede's own comments that he would like to stay with the Sox and he not Boras makes the final decision Then why wouldn't he just fire Boras and go with another agent? Joe wants as much money and years as possible, that's why he hired Boras. You don't hire Scott Boras and then take less money, it doesn't work that way.

How often do you see someone label a 30 year old player as "up and coming"? I don't think I've ever seen that before.
  19. QUOTE(Colorado Sox Fan @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) The big Mack attack could be back? I can see it now...we can't afford Andruw, Jones, or ARow...but we've got Rob back to patrol CF in 2008! Love his attitude, he's a local boy, what's not to like??? Oh, he can't field? But what an attitude!!!! He can field just fine, just not in CF. He's an excellent corner OF/2B/3B but he'll give you nothing in center. Sadly a decision was made in 2006 to leave him out there despite his defensive limitations and that's kind of ruined his reputation in this city. He is a fantastic bench player.
  20. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 12:12 AM) http://www.inflatabledefender.com/video.htm Dear God, yes. WITH REALISTIC GENITALIA!
  21. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 07:32 AM) To say Joe Crede is not an everyday player is absolutely stupid. Like I said before, he's the most underrated, overrated player we have on this team. For whatever reason, there just seems to be no middle ground with Joe, he's either fantastic or awful in peoples mind. Obviously, he's neither fantastic or awful. I've long said that he's a middle of the pack 3B with some upside but also obvious limitations. I don't want to knock Crede as much as I do but when he's being compared to hall of famers it tend to take the other side of the argument.
  22. Ellis Burks signed a 1 year deal with the Sox in 1993 at the age of 28. He had a pretty good season and left through free agency. The following season he put up a 1.066 OPS for the Rockies and went on to play another 10 above average seasons after that. I don't think it's Ellis Burks you're thinking of.
  23. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) Yeah, you're right. A .324 OBP, .469 SLG (.793 OPS), .271 AVG, 20 homers, and 85-90 RBI's is well worth a 5 year contract worth 15 million every season, especially for a player who will only get worse, at least in my opinon. He's averaged 510 AB, 81 R, 30 2B, 25 HR, 87 RBI, 18 SB, .279/.335/.487/.822 over the past 3 seasons along with above average and at times spectacular defense. He's also a name that can be marketed by the club, the value of that should not be overlooked.
  24. Yeah, he might still be able to make player out there, but he has slowed down tremendously, and I would not be surprised to see a serious drop off in bat speed within the next few years as well. Torii Hunter might help the team in the short term, but he does not do anything for the long term, and in fact just hurts our long term even worse, if you ask me. Also, how is Garland pretty much out the door? It seems to me you are just making that up. What would you say are the odds of Garland getting dealt this offseason 60%? Considering all the talk I'd put it at 75%. In order to fill a few of the many holes this team has Garland will likely go. That is what I'm talking about.
  25. He's not going to get 6 years, it'll be 4 or 5 at the most and as for the contract that he supposedly turned down, according to Hunter a legitimate offer was never even made by the Twins. I'm not worried about the 4th or 5th year of the deal because the first 3 should be pretty damn good by that 4th he'll be slower but probably still hitting for good power and making all the plays he's capable of getting to in the OF. And yes, some people are worried about the first few years of the deal. When claims of "career years" and "he's a mediocre player" are being made, then it's not just the last year or 2 of the deal that people are worried about. I don't see anyone offering him more than 5 guaranteed years, if someone like Tom Hicks decides to do so then bully for him he can have Torii. But $13M-$14M a year over 4 or 5 years doesn't scare me all that much. What else are the Sox going to spend that money on? The payroll will likely be in the 100's for the foreseeable future and there's no players aside from Garland (who is pretty much out the door) that are looking for big money in the coming years and the free agents aren't going to get any cheaper. The money is there and the player is a good fit.
