Since both players are still under full team control (not yet eligible for arbitration), they are offered minimum or near minimum contracts that are accepted. I guess formality is the best way of putting it but the Sox were at no time at risk of losing these players. Same goes for the other 20 or so players they signed to 1 year deals today. I'm sure there's much better ways of explaining it than this.
