QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) Anderson had it handed to him too fast, IMO. He didn't earn it. And his reluctance to go play winter ball after tanking so bad this season really leaves me in doubt about him. He was never "reluctant" he just didn't jump for joy.

So then all of you who want to keep Garcia would be willing to give him a 3 year big $$$ contract extension right now right? Because if you're not then he needs to be traded. QUOTE(That funky motion @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 11:06 AM) He is 4-1 with a 2.49 era in Sept. 7-3 since Aug. If all of our starting pitching put up # like Freddy, we would be in the playoffs. To me Freddy is the only one who showed up! How the hell is a 5.72 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, .299 BAA in August showing up?? He had his worst month when the team needed him most.

QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 01:27 AM) The kid's definitely great (with the glove, anyway). I don't mean it as a smartass thing either, but does anyone have an idea of what he could/would demand for salary? Well he made $3M on the Red Sox this year so that's where you start at. He's 30 years old and plays excellent defense at a very important defensive position he has some definate injury concerns (missed 120 games in '02, ~30 games in '05 and ~50 games this season) so that's not good. He's crazy inconsistant at the dish but usually posts a batting average in the .225-.255 range and an OBP around .300 which is pretty horrible. He has displayed some good power in the past (18 HR in '03, 23 HR in '04) but doesn't seem to have a knack for driving in runs and seems to enjoy striking out (100K 4 times). He's likely going to make $2.5M - $3M next season. IMO, he's really no better than Uribe.

What the hell did KW say in place of [some people]? What could he possibly have said that called for brackets?

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 11:07 PM) Spoiler? The Twins are in. We can't spoil a damn thing. They might actually be better off if they have to play the Yankees in a 5-game series. And now it looks like Randy Johnson could miss the entire postseason ala Pedro, this only bodes well for the team that faces them in the first round.

QUOTE(ExpatNYC @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 10:59 PM) I think it's shortsighted to move Garcia. Same goes for Mark. I know they looked like s*** this year, but Greg is right: there is no available starting picthing in baseball. Now, maybe that means we could get more for him. But that means we could get more for anyone. I'm still waiting to see how many of our pitchers will need surgery this off season. Will Garcia be among them? Contreras? Cotts? It's tough for me to buy the Konerko theory of fatigue for the whole team, but for the pitching staff, it makes sense, especially for Freddy. There's no good starting pitching available, so true. Luckily the Sox have what appears to be a pretty damn good starting pitcher sitting in the pen right now who is very young and very cheap. The lack of available good pitching only raises the trade value of guys like Buehrle and Garcia, to keep a Contreras/Garcia/Buehrle/Garland/Vazquez rotation in tact for another year would be shortsighted seeing how old this pitching staff is getting.

QUOTE(ExpatNYC @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 10:55 PM) I'm not sure if BA's lack of play this season is that high on the list of why we didn't make the playoffs. I've puzzled over the why of it all for a while now, and the best I can come up with is the lopsided performance. Starting pitching without offense. Offense without pitching. Finally, of course, it was the pitching that finally ruined us. Joey Cora didn't help. And Ozzie's irrational managing of the pitching staff. God, it's so depressing. I don't even know who to root for. I don't hate the Twins, never have. I do hate the Tigers, though not as much as the Yanks. Couldn't care less about the As, even with Frank. If I had to put money on it now, it would go on the Twins to go all the way. Horrible outfield defense (pods/Mack) may not be a top 3 reason why the Sox didn't make the postseason but it was a major contributing factor to 2006 Chicago White Sox post-AllStar Break suck fest.

Remember one thing with Garcia, he's in a very similar boat as Buehrle. Who here would be willing to give Freddy Garcia a long term contract extension right now? No one? Really? Yeah, no s***. So the Sox would go into 2007 with Freddy Garcia being a free agent at the end of the season, that just does not work for me considering how much trade value he has right now which is quite a bit. Here's the choices: 1.) Trade Freddy Garcia over the offseason and get a fine package of prospect back in return 2.) Keep Freddy for 2007, have him pitch like s*** and watch him walk at the end of the year, the Sox get no compensaton for him/possibly a few draft picks. 3.) Keep Freddy for 2007, have him pitch well and give him a contract extension midseason for way more than you'd give him right now (not smart. 4.) Keep Freddy for 2007, have him pitch well and let him walk, Sox recieve no compensation/possibly a draft pick. In other words, Freddy needs to go bye bye as soon as possible.

Was our best starting pitcher in the bullpen all year ?

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 10:21 PM) Don't you agree we need a lefty? Not if he sucks. -
QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 10:16 PM) Maybe because in his opinion in his more than 20 years in baseball, Ozzie feels Anderson is one big whiff. One big stiff. Ozzie doesn't like him. What is so hard to understand about that. Like it or not, the White Sox manager does not like Brian Anderson. I think that by now is pretty apparent. And that is just one of the many reasons why this team will not be making the playoffs this season, it's a shame really.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 10:14 PM) I don't understand why people want to trade Freddy so badly. Take a look around baseball. He's in the upper echelon, but we need to get rid of him. Stupid. Yeah I agree any pitcher who can go out and give you ERAs of 5.86, 5.72, 5.52 and 4.81 in 4 out of 6 months is pretty damn special.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 08:39 PM) Would you rather have Owens/Pablo or Pierre, who will be more expensive? Owens should be able to hit .270, steal at a greater success rate than Pods, and play decent defense. Owens hit .262 in Charlotte this year why in the hell would his batting average jump 10 points on his arrival in the bigs?

QUOTE(beautox @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 07:45 PM) Dye making it look easy. Anyone want to take a stab at whos going to win a GG for RF this year in the AL? Vernon Wells, Torii Hunter, Ichiro Suzuki Same as last year.

QUOTE(AirScott @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 02:18 PM) Reds won't part with Freel. at least not to my knowledge, although I think I read somewhere they won't. Lugo, however... Why make more work for the Chicago Police Department?

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 01:36 AM) El Duque is starting game one of the playoffs. And this is just one of the reasons why the Mets aren't making it out of the first round.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 12:21 AM) This has been bugging me all night... What the heck was Jerome Bettis doing at a paper products convention in Philadelphia? He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, not the Eagles. And, I don't know if you guys know this, but, Jerome Bettis is from Detroit. /anxiously awaiting Bettis showing up in the antics of Camden County. He works for NBC now, it doesn't have to make sense.

QUOTE(SABR Sox @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 10:43 PM) I don't. Those guys are jerks who brag about how Jose Reyes is the greatest baseball player who ever lived and how Carlos Beltran is the unanimous MVP. I hope this team gets killed. And look at how badly Beltran has choked away that MVP gotta love his September splits .160/.364/.280/.644. I can't wait to see the Dodgers stick it right up the the giggy of the Mets and their fans in the first round.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 09:25 PM) Not even Jeff Kent? Not enough to effect my feelings towards the team.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 08:58 PM) You're backing the Dodgers? It's true, you're always right. I love me some Dodgers baseball it's the only team still alive that doesn't have a player on their roster that I hate. They're incredibly streaky/inconsistent so if they can get hot over the final couple games of the season they could make a nice run in the playoffs.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 08:45 PM) Much worse than Podsednik in LF and Mackowiak in CF? About equal maybe a little better of course the combination of Podsednik/Mackowiak is epically horrid and unmatched league wide. I just wish this team could have one full season with an excellent defensive outfield Jermaine Dye and Brian Anderson is a good start.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 08:17 PM) so, you throw away 5 years of good for one year of bad? I say he deserves a chance to cure what ails him before we go about shipping him off. He doesn't throw hard and he doesn't put a lot of strain on his arm with wicked curves or screwballs. If he starts slowly next year...maybe ship him out before the trading deadine. But, he has done enough with the White Sox to give him time to sort himself out. If Buehrle even starts for the Sox next season without a contract extention then the Sox are screwed. Only a few things could come of that. 1.) He could suck for the start of the season and kill all trade value he has, which would completely kill the Sox for '08 and beyond. 2.) He could pitch well which would only increase his value making any long term contract extension much more expensive than it would be over this offeason comming off a horrible year. It makes no sense to go into the season with a lameduck Buehrle. Having him start the season then trading him after say the first 2 months if he pitches poorly would be a horrible move, his value would be nothing and the Sox would be fried. If you can't lock him up to an extension this offseason he needs to be traded by opening day.

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 06:09 PM) Jimmy Rollins for Garcia and Uribe is not realistic. I would trade 2 of Vazquez/Garcia/Buehrle. See who brings the most back. If it's all the same, Buehrle would be the first to go. I would then sign Soriano for LF in hopes of offsetting possible down years from Thome/Dye/Konerko/Crede. If Juan Pierre is available and we still have money left over, then sign him up too. Basically we have to improve two from the LF/CF/SS deathspots. I don't think there's a realistic upgrade for SS (hope we stay away from Lugo). 1.) It looks like Soriano will only speak to teams that will allow him to play 2B next season he does not want to play the OF anymore. 2.) Lets just say the Sox did sign both Pierre and Soriano and stuck Soriano in LF and Pierre in CF. That would basically be the worst defensive outfield in baseball, you'd see a ridiculous amount of balls dropping especially in the gaps.

QUOTE(TheOcho @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 03:49 PM) Speaking of Escobar, what has he been up to? He's hobbling around D.C. somewhere, he made a brief appearance with the Nationals around midseason and played well but was hurt soon after. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 03:53 PM) disagree So what exactly has Jerry Owens done to make you think he can put up a .260 BA/.330 OBP in the majors?
