  1. JD may be a bad defender, but Abreu makes him look good.
  2. I don't know if it's been mentioned but I think Abreu is particularly attractive because although he's a type A, he was not offered arb so we won't lose a draft pick.
  3. None of that is reassuring at all. No selections in the rule V draft?
  4. Reds are close to trading Freel to the O's. I think a move like that opens salary room for them and is a possible prelude to the Dye-Bailey move.
  5. Alexei plays defense the same way Jim Edmonds does. Flashy, which distracts from the fact that other competent defenders make those plays look easy. It makes him look good because you see highlight reel plays, but you miss that they shouldn't be that difficult in the first place. Remember how Edmonds always played far back and had to make dives on pop-ups?
  6. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 08:38 AM) Personally, I love Alcides Escobar. He's a legit leadoff type hitter. He may be a year away from truly being that, but I still want him. I'd rather have him over Hart. The Brewers will have to move Hardy or Escobar. Either one I'd take over Hart. And move Ramirez to CF. There's no way the Brewers trade one of the top prospects in baseball.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 09:18 PM) That's the one thing I hate with Gavin Floyd comparisons (other than the fact that it appears obvious that Floyd has much better stuff). Gavin Floyd spent what was pretty much an entire year in AAA before he even made the rotation, and the only reason he was starting in September was because the Sox were terrible. Anybody penciling Marquez into the rotation at the beginning of the year really need to consider if they want a 5.50 ERA as the #5 starter. Anybody that thinks the Sox are done making moves is naive, because there's no way they don't add a starting pitcher, even if it's at the expense of dealing Dye. Don't forget that he turned in a quality season at AAA in 2007 too. Marquez did not have a good season in 2008 at AAA.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 01:27 AM) Like I said before, those comments will not intimidate them. And if you know that is what those comments were intended to accomplish don't you think OC and his agent would as well? They don't care about KW. They don't care if the White Sox really don't want him. They have known that. They care about money. He's going to do pretty well for one year if he accepts arbitration, and if he plays decently will probably be the top SS on the market next year. As a White Sox fan, if OC accepted arbitration and the White Sox just plopped him on the bench and played guys like Getz and Nix instead, wouldn't you have a problem with that? Especially considering ticket prices were raised again, it would be very frustrating to see 11 million dollars sitting on the bench because of a personnel standoff.
  9. Capuano and Daniel Cabrera are potential non-tender candidates, and KW loves to pick off the scrap heap... After last year's Hunter incident of course KW is going to say he doesn't plan on doing anything. Him telegraphing the moves were what led to it not happening.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 02:04 AM) I wouldn't want Thome and Dunn back-to-back. I'd hit Thome fourth, Konerko fifth and Dunn sixth. Or Dunn 4th and Thome 6th, depending on who was hottest. I also don't like Fields at the very bottom of the line-up. I'd be tempted to put Alexei there, but then you sacrifice some at-bats over the season. Also, Nix will probably go to the minors if he's not the starter. He can't play all over the diamond like Uribe/Getz/Betemit/Lillibridge. http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-bl...ng_hampton.html Very good article by Atlanta J-C writer on the Vazquel deal, although I think he's discounting any impact from the 3 other players we got in the deal too much, Gilmore in particular. It's just illustrating the point that generally KW doesn't try to fleece people in trades. It also shows how, barring another move, this trade doesn't help the Sox for 2009.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 05:05 PM) And then there are guys who are coming back from injury or are still very young such as Harrell, Ely, Silverio, Jose Martinez, and Escobar Our farm system all of a sudden seems to have players with potential all over the place now. You didn't get the memo. Silverio is a bum and a result of Wilder's corruption. He won't amount to anything.
  12. DBAHO, with this economy teams are hesitant to go and sign FAs. The money isn't there this year, especially considering what K-rod is asking for.
  13. The Japanese FA market this year is particularly weak, so it makes sense not to pay too much attention to it. Plus the Red Sox have a pretty firm grip on the pipeline.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 05:57 AM) The argument is BA during the first half of 2006. We were fine without him hitting...just playing sound defense. Not only that, but Taveras would get into scoring position more often than BA that year, whether he was batting 9th or 1st. It's only when the Twins caught on fire and we were struggling in July/August that BA became a liability and Ozzie decided to go with Mackowiak instead. Wait, I thought that even when a starter, BA still only got like 4 starts a week? He's a rhythm type player. If he doesn't get consistent ABs he won't hit. Statistically BA was the best defensive center fielder in history in 2006 by some measure or another, I can't remember which one. RF maybe? BP was really high on him for it.
  15. If he can be had for 3 years there will be many more takers. Lots of teams would want him for three, it's the fact that he wants five that is the problem.
  16. QUOTE (Shadows @ Nov 29, 2008 -> 05:56 AM) Or, hes been in the league for 4 seasons and both teams hes played for have reached the World Series with him leading off Man, why go after Hudson, let's just sign Eckstein for SS.
  17. Juan Uribe out OPSed Taveras by 80 points last year.
  18. If they trade Dye, move TCQ to right and sign Dunn.
  19. You mean he is their only viable pitching prospect.
  20. It sounds like Perez would be an interesting signing, but not exactly something to be all too excited about. It doesn't sound like he's on the same level of ability as Viciedo.
  21. 11 million, probably 5 years. Torres says he can be in the majors this year, but the Sox most likely think otherwise.
  22. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....to-sign-19.html About time. I was getting worried.
  23. Lowell's defense, assuming the injury doesn't mean too much long term, is way ahead of what Field's can do.
