  1. Oh, I didn't realize it was Hudson. Nevermind. Assuming the 5th starter isn't a complete blackhole for the time being, it's a good trade.
  2. This is an overpay simply because it appears this package is better for the Pads than the original package. The first one was Richard, Poreda and Broadway. Carter and Russell easily have more value than Broadway. Peavy is out for at least 5 weeks. KW overpaid.
  3. Him being hurt might severely reduce the cost for acquiring him. I like this. As long as we keep Flowers and one of Richard/Poreda.
  4. Well, the deadline is really more like an hour longer since typically a few more trades will trickle in.
  5. Although Washburn's numbers are deceiving because of the excellent Mariners defense, the trade does improve that team and it appears they're trying to add a hitter. The Twins got O-Cab. Both of the other top central teams just improved and we can't stand pat because as of those trades they become the better teams.
  6. QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 11:49 PM) We are really quiet for this time of year. Yeah, I'm fairly confident we won't be making any moves.
  7. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 07:33 PM) I understand that. But let's not semi-gut the farm for relievers. I imagine Qualls wouldn't come cheap. Well, a lot of people think the Pena-Allen trade was an olive branch gift after the Quentin trade (like Iguchi after the Garcia trade), so maybe Qualls will come cheap as a make up for the Pena-Allen trade.
  8. That was a dirty dirty slide by Fontenot too. Getz dropped the ball, made a terrible throw and Ramirez was trying to get out of Fontenot's way.
  9. Not to mention that the divisions are set up regionally so that they don't have to spend a lot of time traveling. That's why they do the 5 game series. If they were to re-align the divisions they'd also have to move the teams.
  10. The signability is questionable simply because IIRC he was a senior, and therefore had little leverage.
  11. So is there an indication that this is the end of negotiations or if this is posturing to get the option picked up.

  13. At least from what I've seen at the few Barons's games I've attended, his strikeouts are in the mold of Thome/Swisher. He takes a ton of pitches and runs up the count. So even if he strikes out he's seen 6 or so pitches.
  14. We have to hope the Sox continue to go after high-upside players rather than safe picks like Broadway and McCullough. Given the strengths of the system, particularly with the IF, it's likely they'll go after pitching, and maybe a college outfielder with their first few picks. That way they can bring up all of the prospects between 2010 and 2011.
  15. The first thing I noticed is that they appear to have great chemistry. It was public school day, so the park was full of kids. They were playing the cha-cha slide before the game during stretches. Cook and Gartrell danced for a couple minutes, they all looked like they were having fun. Retherford's and Flowers' hrs were line drives that moved so fast I was barely able to keep sight of. The team seems to excel at hitting line drives. Gordon made a great pick on a play to his right, and Dayan made a strong throw on a ball that ate him up. Dayan is similar to Alexei in that he can make contact on what seems like any pitch. However, he hits them up, whereas Alexei hits them down. Also like Alexei, he really needs to work on his pitch recognition. Good bat speed though. Allen is very solid on all dimensions. I feel bad for Retherford, he looks really good but it seems he'll be blocked at any position. Gartrell has a great eye. He sees a ton of pitches. Shelby has wiry power. Solid baserunning all around. Had a chat with a friend of CJ's mom, she brought him brownies. He was unhappy last year because apparently his teammates didn't care too much about being a mediocre team. I would imagine he's happier now. He and his family are looking at an ETA of 2 years. I think he might make it as a IF-sub in September. He got in trouble with his mom last year because he swore at an ump. My seats were next to the Barons' dugout, so not really that good for observing the pitching. They all seem to have good mound presence and are definitely aware of the runners, unlike our starting 5.
  16. Just got back from the game. Viciedo's error came when he charged in on the ball and threw the ball while stumbling. He probably wouldn't have had the runner regardless. At one point Mobile had a runner on first trying to steal. It was an obvious hit and run, so Beckham ran to cover 2nd on the steal and the ball went right to were he was originally positioned. Not really well done. Allen can absolutely fly. Scored from 1st on a double. Flowers has a very effortless swing, but still gets a ton of power. Shelby's hr was a monster. Landed over the hill. Let me know if you guys want other observations. And yeah the pickoff was not handled all that well. On the other hand, in the two games I went to Barons pitchers have managed 2 pickoffs and caught another stealing. BayBear Ricardo Sosa is having a great start. Keep an eye on him.
  17. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 03:17 AM) B'ham and Montgomery aren't far from Mobile. Just up I-65 for both. The Barons will play in Montgomery a fair bit since they're in the same division. Going to a Biscuits game is probably the only reason I would go to Montgomery. Is there any other reason? Oh, and the flea market. I hear it's just like a mini-mall.
  18. I really wanted to go to tonight's game. What a terrible time for finals.
  19. I wasn't at last night's game, but if it was anything like Saturday's game, Mobile's pitchers were throwing over to 1st what felt like 3 or 4 times every time someone was on. They were definitely distracted.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 27, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) Still bothers me hearing things like that given his past. If it makes you feel better, he is more of the proportional lumberjack mold than the uneven giant arm McGuire mold. He doesn't look freaky huge.
  21. I managed to get an autograph from Flowers after the game. He is much much bigger in person than you'd expect. Viciedo was early on most of his swings, but still showed some decent pop when he made contact. CJ had more a stiff uneven walk than a wobble.
  22. Do the Bears go with Jennings with their last pick?
  23. Was at the Barons' game tonight. Beckham's 2nd double really should've been an error. It was a dropped fly ball. Flowers's home run was to pretty much straight center field, over a very high wall. Mobile's pitchers were distracted by runners all night, even though the Baron's didn't try anything. Ely has good instincts when it comes to runners, got a pickoff and Flowers nailed a runner trying to steal. Viciedo was visibly upset with his performance, as he smashed his helmet to the ground after his last out. Beckham's error was the classic trying to throw before you have the ball. CJ Retherford has a very unfortunate face.
