QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 05:42 AM) Deal is done. 4 years/36... with 5th year vesting option. I think this is a great move by the Mariners... making themselves stronger, and the best team in their division weaker. Ichiro and Figgins... thats one hell of a combo... too bad they really don't have anything else. They've developed an interesting structure that's based much on team D. Their defense can make any pitcher look good (Washburn for instance). They're kinda like the Dodgers from a few years ago. The offense isn't great, but the pitching is phenomenal and will keep them competitive. Ichiro and Figgins make a great 1-2, which would obviously be even better if they bring Branyan back. Regardless, that setup will give other teams fits. They have some good talent in the minors too. They're going after Bay pretty aggressively. As it stands, this team is set to be good for a the next few years. Z is a great GM, and surprisingly, Figgins is signing a rather reasonable contract.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 01:37 AM) http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Ahhv...p&type=lgns I dunno. Guess there aren't many options out there. Of there's nothing going on, the winter meetings haven't started. If they are indeed unwilling to commit significant money to a FA, they have two lineup holes to fill and limited parts to do it with. Jenks isn't expendable per se, but he's not exactly critical at this point either.

Add Calero and Johnson to the no list as well. Both had great years and should be worth pursuing. Calero made 500k this year and still the Marlins refused arb. Ridiculous.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Dec 1, 2009 -> 08:32 PM) but why would you want to trade good prospects for him, because like someone said in a different thread. he has a ton of potential but he is a question mark. its not 100% sure thing like gonzalez. if im making a trade its for gonzalez not for upton...or am i wrong? Gonzalez, being a sure thing, would cost several times more than it would to acquire Upton, who is a gamble but with tons of potential. That gamble should lower the price.

QUOTE (1977 sox fan @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 03:36 AM) but Rice was more feared as a hitter i remember watching games and when rice step to the plate you got nervous i can't say that for Baines The only reason people would be worried about Rice at the plate would be GIDP. Led the league in 4 seasons, career avg of 24 a season. He has something like 3 of the top 5 total GIDP seasons. This whole "most feared" thing is completely made up by his PR campaign. I will repeat this. He was intentionally walked 77 times over his career. This is good for 49th overall for that time period. You would expect the most feared hitter of his time to be a little higher on that list, right?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 12:18 AM) here's a posting at Realclimate on those stolen emails, I'll excerpt a few paragraphs. It's too bad that the vocabulary disconnect is largely the cause of this, and despite there being completely rational explanations for the language used, they will obviously be ignored. Of course Fox News has called this Global Warming's Waterloo. Despite the obvious preponderance of evidence that indicates otherwise. I don't get the vitriol aimed against people who want to stop global climate change. Besides Al Gore being a champion for it, I don't know why it's such a politically divisive issue. What do global warming deniers believe the incentive is for those "making it up" is?

QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 06:36 PM) Rice's career was more compact. His peak numbers were over a 10-12 year period where he was clearly one of the elite run producers and feared hitters in baseball. Baines accumulated big numbers over 20+ seasons. If you're an "accumulator", you have to get to 500 homers and/or 3000 hits. Baines didn't get to either and he never got close to winning an MVP. He came in 9th once and 10th once. He just doesn't cut it as a Hall of Fame player. He got his number retired and a statue from the White Sox...that's his Hall of Fame. This is such BS. Most feared hitter? Jim Rice played from 1974 to 1989. He was intentionally walked 77 times over this period of time. This is good for 49th overall for that time period. Ahead of him include feared hitters Ben Oglivie, Warren Cromartie, and Keith Hernandez. For another comparison, Dave Concepcion was intentionally walked 75 times from 1974 to 1988 (when he retired). Jim Rice is the lucky recipient of a massive PR campaign that he wouldn't have had if he played for a non-AL East team. He was a good player, but not HOF worthy and his entrance immediately lowered the standard for the hall.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 04:31 AM) Alexei Ramirez is the White Sox SS. Vizquel will see very little time there and he is 43 years old. You think Jermaine Dye is old. This guy is 7 years older than him. And the game has changed. You can't get away with a guy who hit like Belanger anymore. At least in the AL. I dunno, Franklin Gutierrez doesn't have much of a bat.

QUOTE (tommy @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 05:20 AM) Very surprised to see Jared Mitchell so high. Is it not weird that the way CJ Retherford has been hitting the ball lever after lever he is pretty low on that list? Retherford is sort of an overachiever. He's had to fight his way into a spot at nearly every stop, even before being in the Sox system. While he's definitely produced well at each level, he has utility man written all over him. But the good kind, like a DeRosa.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 11:57 PM) Wrong, they won in 2005 with ridiculous pitching. They had a 100 run differential over their opponents. They scored 70 more runs in 2008 than they did in 2005 and 120 more in 2006, it didnt matter, its all about keeping the runs off the board. I think ridiculous pitching may be an understatement when you look at the numbers the bullpen put up. The offense was well-balanced though. Ozzieball was overrated and really not a factor, it was the power that kept the offense going.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 11:34 PM) If the sox did add Pods, it would be mostly for DH, but Quentin could see some time there as well. Yet I'm not overly concerned about Quentin's health. There isn't a lot of reason to be extra cautious with him at his age and health status I can't imagine that Pods would be a great choice for DH though. You're going to want better than a career .720 OPS at that spot.
-
Honestly, considering his health, Quentin should really be moved to DH.

QUOTE (thedoctor @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:15 PM) am i wrong on this or isn't teahen a butcher at third? Butcher is probably an overstatement. Certainly not very good, but he's not terrible either. Besides, since when has this organization valued defense?

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:54 AM) Oh, I'm not saying its what I'd do, just stating what could be going on for the Sox and this move ultimately gives them flexibility to move Paulie. Basically the Sox end up thinking Paulie's cash and the guy they can get for Paulie, plus Teahan > Getz/Konerko/Fields. I don't know what the plan is and I definitely would tell you that the current version of Teahan isn't an adequate first baseman. I do think Mark has a lot of nice tools, but again, your paying a lot of money for that. I'd love it if he was a bench player who might be able to fight and earn a starting spot, but in this case, we are handing him a starting spot at a productin position which is a little scary, but there is a ton of the off-season left to go. Very odd that nothing has been confirmed or denied at this point. There is definitely smoke to this, but its also definitely not the final deal, imo. Considering Callaspo was one of the Royals' better players, you'd have to wonder why they'd want Getz. Beginning to think that this deal isn't what we think it is.
-
That didn't take long for the offseason to start. Also wouldn't it make more sense to put Teahan at 3rd, move Beckham and Ramirez over, and shop for a bigger bat in RF?
-
Something to consider on the potential trade front.

QUOTE (son of a rude @ Oct 12, 2009 -> 06:29 PM) Yeah, I'm liking that number. Does anybody have any rough estimate on what it will be after we offer arb to danks, quentin, DJ, and pena? (hoping we dont offer it to bobby) I'm not good with the arb numbers. Don't forget that the Sox loathe going to arbitration and will do anything they can to avoid going that route. Obviously there will be pay raises but I don't think it will be through arb. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 05:53 PM) I just think we should be talking about the Saints. That convincing win on Sunday was huge, and very convincing for me. Brees didn't even have a great game, and they put 21 on a defense that I find to be the most dominating in the league. 14 of those points were scored by the defense though. They are certainly a great team, but the offense has been slowing down and they haven't had to really deal with injuries yet.

Zambrano: Sox One of Three Teams He Would Go To
chunk23 replied to LVSoxFan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If he wasn't so expensive I would be all over adding him to the rotation. I hate the guy, but didn't we all say that about AJ too? -
Seahawks have been hit worst by injuries of all NFL teams (10 starters so far), so we have a pretty solid chance next week. This team looks really talented, it's just a matter of putting it all together.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...sc=fb&cc=fp Lots of support for the public option in this poll. edit: although everyone should be fighting against the Baucus bill, it's terrible.

RWA (right-wing authoritarianism) is a psychological construct used in identifying political leaning. Were there wildly popular figures in the media claiming Bush is a racist, socialist, fascist, or not an American?
-
^that doesn't follow logically at all. RWA does correlate with racial attitudes pretty well though.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 03:22 AM) Do I need to post how many African Americans voted for Obama? Clinton, Gore and Kerry all received around +90% of the African American vote. Obama received around 95%. Maybe if the GOP would stop demonizing minorities they would receive more support.
-
So are you still saying racism plays no part in the protests? or is it I because I used a qualifier I'm just making stuff up?
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 03:59 AM) Oh you said partly. Yeah, that gives you your out to say whatever you want. I never said all opposition to Obama is born completely out of racism. I said there is a racial component to quite a bit of the opposition to Obama. I then backed it up with evidence. You attacked a statement I never made, then when I corrected you, you just ignored what I really said.
