  12. QUOTE (Jimmywins1 @ Jan 18, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) 2008 Brian Anderson: 21 XBH in 181 AB (as a 4th outfielder) 2007 Jerry Owens: 13 XBH in 356 AB (as a full time player) 550 AB Brian Anderson: 64 XBH (24 HR, 40 doubles) 550 AB Jerry Owens: 20 XBH I'd rather have Brian Anderson hitting .235 w/ 24 home runs and 40 doubles while playing GG defense in CF (which is probably the most important defensive position right now, seeing as the CF'er will be flanked by Dye and Quentin), than having Jerry Owens' pansy ass hitting .260 with garbage D and some stolen bases. Be wary of extrapolating like that, because BA in 2008 was held to facing left-handed pitching as much as possible. His power numbers against lefties were better (8 HR vs 0 HR). As a starter, he will have to face righties in a much larger percentage of his ABs, and will not record over 60 extra-base hits. BTW I am in no way indirectly advocating that Jerry Owens should start

  19. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 03:56 PM) Candidate A: .352 OBP, .491 slugging, .843 OPS. .904 home OPS, .786 away OPS 12 seasons, 298 home runs, 603 walks, 895 strikeouts, no gold gloves. Played all home games at a right handed hitters haven. Candidate B: .352 OBP, .502 slugging, .854 OPS. .920 home OPS, .789 away OPS 16 seasons, 382 home runs, 670 walks, 1423 strikeouts, no gold gloves. Played all home games at a right handed hitters haven. Just for the record, candidate B is Jim Rice and Candidate A is Paul Konerko. So I guess assuming Paulie plays out his contract here in Chicago, puts up two average years by his standards, and then either retires or just plays a year or two extra somewhere else, he should be in the hall of fame too? Well yes, according to the precedent set today, he should. The uprising on the east coast for Jim Rice to be in the hall of fame was a joke, and the fact that he is now in is a joke, it's not the "hall of really good". But hey, I'm sure Paul Konerko and his similar numbers will get this same support someday, right? Konerko has never won a MVP award, Rice has. Konerko has never led the league in hits, home runs, RBIs, slugging, triples, but Rice has done all these things. Konerko has been to three All-Star games, Rice went to eight. Konerko has batted over .300 two times, Rice seven (he's very close to a lifetime .300 average which is a big milestone.) These are the kind of important baseball events separating the two players

  24. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jan 4, 2009 -> 08:59 PM) Guys shouldn't use other borderline players just to get in. You say he was the "dominant" player at his position, DH, but Harold never led the league in anything except for slugging % in 1984. You say he missed some time due to the strikes which cost him some milestones, but he hung around for 22 years anyways. By the end he was so protective in matchups his last season with 500 at-bats was 1989. In 1997 he did have 510 plate appearances however but did not finally retire until 2002. Here are the HOF measures from Baseball reference.com: Black Ink: Batting - 3 (507) (Average HOFer ≈ 27) Gray Ink: Batting - 40 (602) (Average HOFer ≈ 144) HOF Standards: Batting - 44.3 (105) (Average HOFer ≈ 50) HOF Monitor: Batting - 66.0 (279) (Likely HOFer > 100) Not even close. Sorry Harold. I think Statman has a valid point with the missed time. With 16 more HRs you add 7 points to his HOF Monitor (400 HR) and with 134 more hits you add 25 points to his HOF Monitor (3,000 hits) bringing the total to at the very least, 98. With those extra games, 400 HR is a good possibility and 3,000 hits would be close.
