QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 04:46 PM) I just got back from seeing Doubt. It was a pretty good movie, but you could tell that it was only as good as it was because of the strong performances by the two main actors. It probably would've been unbearable had it not starred Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep. Thx, MMD, I've been going back and forth on watching it. This is my guess, they story can only go one of two ways, so the film has to rely on strong performances, am I right?

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 03:46 PM) Ive watched Slumdog Millionaire and Snow Angels in the past few days. I thought Slumdog was ok, not as good as the hype, but an interesting idea for a movie nonetheless. I really liked Snow Angels, I had no idea what it was about before I watched it and was very pleasantly surprised. SPOILER ALERT: Agreed on SM. Since we know the ending going into it, I felt the stories and situations of how he knew the answers could have been more interesting.

'Tranny Talk' will be back after this message. Pretty sure I know the answer, but has anyone seen, or does anyone have any interest in seeing 'Australia'? I seem to remember someone else here is a big Buz Luhrmann fan?

Gooch Returns?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 2, 2009 -> 05:19 AM) Historically, the White Sox have always been 2-3 years too late on getting players past their prime/s...this time, KW really brought in Iguchi at the perfect time and place, as he was one of the catalysts in unwinding the selfishness of the previous teams and serving as a role model in how to play the game quietly and correctly, in a way that wasn't really reflected accurately by the box scores. :notworthy

Person Below You Game
False. The person below me has a raging hangover and owes someone an apology for last night.

QUOTE (The Critic @ Dec 31, 2008 -> 10:53 PM) Just got back from seeing The Wrestler. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a great movie by any stretch. It was a decent movie, worth seeing for a night out with the Mrs, but nothing outstanding. Rourke did a nice job, maybe Oscar-worthy, maybe not. But does Marisa Tomei get naykee in it? ;)

QUOTE (The Critic @ Dec 31, 2008 -> 08:31 AM) I gotta say, I didn't enjoy anything about that. Grandpa #2 has gotta say that was God awful. As far as the 'comedic' effect, that's just a way for a s***ty band to try to cover up the fact that they're a s***ty band...... and the chick is not cute, sorry.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 31, 2008 -> 08:37 AM) In Illinois a single time offender will have to buy the key breathalyzer now. Its the strictest standard in the country. I don't know anything about the penalties, I just know it's a HUGE priority for cops out here. Maybe it's because back home in the city they are more concerned with drugs, gangs etc. Out here, cops have nothing else to do, plus with no public trans, they know people have to drive.

Has there been a huge crackdown on drunk driving back in Chicago, or is it just a California thing? Every other tv ad out here is about drunk driving, every other day the cops start randomly pulling people over for BS and the only thing they're looking for is drunk drivers. Tonight there was a DUI checkpoint near here which caused a 30 min traffic jam. There must have been 20 squad cars, 10 tow trucks, two TV cameras and a helicopter. I seem to remember back home you'd damn near have to get into an accident to get cited for a DUI.

Don't Talk At Movies
Does anyone still see ushers walking the aisles during movies? They should be inside the movie room at least once every 20 mins. looking for those kinds of people. I shouldn't have to miss part of the movie just to go find them.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 30, 2008 -> 10:26 AM) Gran Torino is an excellent film. That's good news. I'm not a fan of the Eastwood 'Dirty Harry' type film, but in the last 5-7 years he's done some good work. Straight ahead story telling with good performances is all you need. Morgan Freeman falls into this category too.

Don't Talk At Movies
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 10:31 PM) I was with my sister at a movie this summer and some chick down from us turns her cell phone on and starts texting, with cell light a-blazing. Towards the end, my sister yells down to them, "BOY IT WAS SURE HARD WATCHING THE MOVIE WITH YOU HAVING YOUR CELL PHONE ON!" The guilty party slunk away from us and out the door as quick as they could - after the credits started rolling - before my sister got down to them. What's so distracting about someone texting during a movie? I suppose they could have gone into the lobby, but at least they weren't talking on it.

Don't Talk At Movies
QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 09:28 AM) good stuff. it reminds me of another funny story that I heard where a guy was watching 300 and he yells at some girls down the isle to quit talking. One of the girls then comes walking up the isle yelling at him but he meets her half way and kicks her down the isle and yells I AM SPARTA! That didn't happen, but it's funny anyway.

'Slumdog Mil' is good, not great, but good. Winslet is in both, 'Reader' and 'Revolutionary'

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 28, 2008 -> 05:20 PM) Mickey Rourke better win the Oscar. I can't think of a single performance this year that even came close. What actors are nominated? Have you seen all the performances?

QUOTE (The Critic @ Dec 27, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) How DARE you! FWIW my wife, who sees a lot of movies, liked it even more than I did. Have it narrowed down to: 'Slumdog Mil', sounds really, really interesting. 'Doubt', unless there is a huge twist, it's headed in one of two ways, although I bet the performances are brilliant. 'The Reader', has potential if it doesn't get too 'chick-flickish'. WWYD?

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Dec 27, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) I really don't watch Will Smith movies, but I would say Pursuit of Happiness was really good. It's true that alot of his movies aren't that great at all. I like that he's starting to go after more serious roles though like Seven Pounds. He's going to hit with at least one of them. Of his last 5 films, it's the only one worth a damn. 7lbs. Hancock I am Ledgend TPOH Hitch I think when he aims to do more serious roles, he fails. He should stick to action films or goofy comedies. I still think his best work ever was in 'The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air', honestly. He nailed exactly what that show aimed for.
