QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) Since he committed today, and as of the now the Illini would be out of scholis, would it be safe to assume Jamar is off the team? i don't think they are related. i think there's a decent chance that someone else (most likely named richard semrau) will move on after this year. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) I think you just solved Konerko's slump - he needs some goofy facial hair. heck yeah, mix in a pink goatee or something. it just might work. seriously, though, swisher has been a disappointment in my eyes. i remember some predictions over how his power numbers were going to shoot up once he started playing in the cell. that clearly hasn't happened. at this point it also looks like we overpaid ridiculously for him. which is fine. considering the quentin and ramirez deals kw's still at a net gain for last offseason, imo.

it's a proven fact that sox fans love white guys with creative facial hair.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 06:13 PM) What might his punishment be legally? if this is found to be a violation i'd say he's looking at having his probation extended. since he's already served time, i don't know that he'd be sent behind bars. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 05:06 PM) Illinois lands Meyers Leonard, PF/C to the 2010 class. He is a top 50 players on Scout top 100 on Rivals. Still, hard to be excited about this with the news about Jamar. good pick-up. leonard already had some nice offers (indiana and purdue among others) and was supposedly emerging this summer and starting to attract more suitors. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 04:34 PM) Depending on what exactly happened, this should definitely be it for Jamar in an Illinois basketball uniform. I wonder if a term of his probation was that he couldn't drink even once he turned 21. even though i probably shouldn't be i'm just stunned at the stupidity of this. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) Maybe its just me with Floyd, but unlike a guy like Buerhle who when you look at him on the mound, his face looks like he could be playing in a softball game at a company picnic, Floyd always looks like a guy who is testifying before Congress with something to hide. lol. well played.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 08:27 PM) Well, no s***. But KW never does. Some GMs sometimes do. keep digging.
-
ok, the 'kenny never makes a big move at the deadline' nonsense has to stop. does anyone really think he has a philosophy that says 'i won't make a big deal at the deadline that will help my team'? gmafb. what gm makes a big-name deal every year? no one. the market and your resources dictate what move you make or don't make. when the deal was right kw picked up a guy who was key. when it wasn't, he didn't. personally i don't think he's going to make a big deal. but that's because i don't think we have the resources to get it done, not because 'kw never does big deadline deals.' jesus, could we have at least a slight bit of sophistication when we look at stuff like this. sheesh.

fwiw, sports illustrated runs a players' poll in each week's edition that asks current players a league-related question. this week's was who they'd select as mvp. hamilton was first, a-rod third, and quentin fourth. who was second escapes me right now. quentin only had three percent of the vote, but it was nice to see him mentioned by his peers. edited for clarity.

the only way uribe for cora is remotely acceptable is if it is the first domino.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 21, 2008 -> 02:43 AM) Another good day for the Illini... I would expect Appleton to commit sometime soon. Scheelchase, Hawthorne, Appleton = Illinois looking set for the future of their passing game. some of the illinois boards are speculating that appleton is a silent verbal who wants to commit at the all-american game. -
i can appreciate the spirit of the thread, but i don't see a scenario where fields is the centerpiece of a deal that brings back anything appreciably better than what we have now. i'd be more than willing to worry about next year's situation next year if dealing fields meant we could get someone who could step into the starting rotation and represent a certain significant improvement over contreras and/or vazquez. i don't see that deal out there. the same could be said for a reliever.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) During his major league career he's started 2 games. There's the start he made last year at Wrigley in 40 degree weather with the wind blowing straight in where he went 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K and the spot start he made earlier this year in Minnesota where he went 4 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HBP (9 baserunners in 4 inning of work.) Lets not act like he's made 5 or 6 starts, he's made 2 and 1 was good the other was mediocre. i didn't act like anything. in his spots starts he's been fine, probably better than jose's been lately.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 04:56 PM) Masset has been awful lately, outside of his game at Texas. i'm aware of his recent struggles. he's struggled before then stepped in and made strong spot starts, no?
-
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) so who is the fifth starter? Masset? that's a scary, scary thought. Carrasco should be able to handle a couple of innings of middle relief per week. i don't see why masset as a stopgap starter would be scary.

not sure if this is the proper place for this question but i was not sure where else to put it. anyhow, i am getting married next summer and plan on coming into chicago for my bachelor party. i'm not so much interested in the stripper thing (this is my second marriage, i did stripper's last time) and thought that having the party centered around a cubs at sox saturday game would be pretty cool. basically, my question is how would anyone here recommend going about getting a block of 20 tickets to that game. i've looked through all the group seating request stuff online, but wasn't clear if that was an option for all games. i also recognize that's way in the future but i'd prefer to get a head start rather than a late one. tia. i believe in the wisdom of soxtalk.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 06:10 PM) AAA - .265 / 9 hr / 27 rib / 10 SB, to only 1 CS thanks. presuming oc is not resigned, i'd guess alexei moves to short next year. who has the leg up at second--getz or richar?
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 05:57 PM) If you could get Kemp for OC, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Your suddenly improve your OF situation immensely with a kid who will be your CF for the next 10 years. Then, I'd move Alexei to SS and bring up Getz for 2b or even Richar. It would be hard to move OC, but for the future it makes us so much better and even this year, I don't think you'd lose that much. but would the dodgers trade for a FA-to-be? Order CF Kemp C AJ LF Q RF Dye DH Konerko (or Thome) 1b Swish 3B Crede SS Alexei 2b Getz (or Richar) That lineup is not much worse, it's worse and your D is gonna suffer but for the future it's very good. But again, would you want to sacrifice maybe a little this year for something pretty good in the future? speaking of richar, what is his status?

i think it goes without saying that a team in first place controls its own destiny. the sox just need to keep doing what they've been doing. it seems to have worked well.
