QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 29, 2008 -> 06:02 PM) Not good at all. He was a star recruit. He wants to start and play all game as a frosh. His "family advisor" said it was a business decision. Matta should have probably played him more since Simmons sucks, but I guess they wanted to limit his min at first. Not good for the program, but it does open up a slot for next year. in the long term it *may* not be bad. i was not impressed with what i'd seen out of crater for the hype that preceded him. granted, he's a true frosh running point and that's never a desireable situation, so you have to cut him some slack in that regard. at the same time, he just didn't do some fundamental things very well. if he had a poor attitude on top of it (which this would seem to suggest) maybe its better to cut losses early and give matta a shot at a 09 recruit. this puts this years team in a bad way, though, as it relates to point guard. i wonder if they take a look at offutt there. -

noopy crater leaving ohio state and not nicely, either. charges of matta deceiving him over his role and such. this will leave ohio state really, really thin at point guard. they now have simmons (two-guard in a point guard's body) and p.j. hill (who wasn't good enough to beat out a disenchanted true freshman for playing time). bad two weeks for the buckeyes. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 08:14 PM) I wonder what KW has up his sleeve. We are not a better team right now than the end of teh season. you could probably say that about most teams at this point.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) that damned wilder can go to hell! Gene too hells yeah. in fact, i am going to refuse to watch young frankenstein and/or stir crazy until this dastardly plot has been revealed.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 06:02 PM) Rest assured that KW is still trying to add players but not salary. Players like Abreu etc have found out their price tags are not going to be met and will come down in cost and years. I still expect some action to happen before xmas. in general there's been very little movement this offseason. the market seems constipated. i'm not sure how it exactly relates to previous years, but it does seem as if there have been far less moves up until this point than at this time in previous years. probably a lot of players will have to reassess their wants over the holidays. there is a long list of guys out there right now without a deal or team. i think it behooves kw to wait out the market, although i'm certain that's not a popular opinion among fans.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:48 PM) Punto stinks He probably lead the league in stupid baserunning mistakes that led directly to outs. He has zero power and stinks at the plate. He slides head first into first base, what kind of idiot does that? Why do the Twins even go to the winter meetings? They do nothing ever. This team will be terrible in 2010 when they stop playing on the concrete carpet and actually have to hit for power to score runs. I am a slappy banjo hitter who hardly hits .250 with zero power and runs the bases like Hellen Keller, can I have $8.5 million too? Punto got it. keller is actually underrated as a baserunner. she makes up for her lack of speed and sight with excellent technique.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) BTW, where is the market for Crede? I havent heard ANYTHING there are A LOT of guys still out there and the market is going to get even thicker once teams non-tender guys. i know that the winter meetings in many years are the high point of offseason activity, but that's not going to be the case this year. i think everyone's just trying to wait out the market and see what shakes out. this is one reason i'm not losing sleep over the fact that we didn't get anything done in vegas. we haven't seen the most active part of the offseason market yet. we will.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) KW was on the Score update saying he believes his team currently can win the division as the team stands... now of course what else is he going to say but I sure hope he doesn't really believe that. everyone thought he was full of crap when he said it last year, too.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 06:32 PM) He’s a volatile personality, but he can be kept in check. A guy like Ozzie, and a GM like KW are the exact type of people who can help Bradley. Out. There was an incident last year where Bradley went after the Royals announcer for what he perceived as being a personal attack. Bradley was stopped by his friends on the team; afterwards he never took any ill-conceived action again. Milton Bradley can have a place in Chicago, the team certainly would have to make some accommodations (picking up a backup to spell him everyonce In a while), but his bat is just too potent to let go if you can get it. Remember AJ and Jenks had a history of incidents as well, and they’ve been fantastic additions to the team. i don't think anyone should assume that ozzie and bradley would get along. if he has rabbit ears to the point he's going after an announcer for a perceived attack, how's he going to react when ozzie sh1ts on him as would likely happen at some point of the season.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 05:52 AM) I'll be at the December 20th game for the Illini against Detroit. I get to see them play in person quite a bit, but very rarely at Assembly Hall, so looking forward to it. Nice to see them win today, and they better be ready to run Thursday. Chicago State won't beat them, but they press all game long and David Holston is a stud at 2nd in the nation in scoring. Also, the Illini were outrebounded 39-14 and that's just unacceptable, even if they did kind of sleepwalk to an easy win tonight. the rebounding thing will likely persist all year, as will the almost total lack of interior defense. the horses just aren't there. that said, i really hope they do not consider taking the redshirt off of simpson. he could probably help in both regards, but i don't like the idea of burning a year. as an aside, it's nice to see semrau showing some ability out there. i know folks where talking about running him off after he was a non-factor the past two years, but he's shown me a bit this year. frankly i'd rather have him out there than tisdale at this point. -
ba would have a new wingman.

i will guess that a dye deal gets done and that is followed relatively quickly by a free-agent signing.

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 09:20 PM) o.k. just a few thoughts from reading this thread. 1. i would not be a fan of this trade as constructed. i know bailey has tons of potential but i believe dye deserves more in return. i will wait to judge the trade, however, til a. its completed b. we see all the players involved and c. we see the following moves in the offeson. 2. anyone who doesn't believe that jermaine dye is one of the most productive/important players to wear a white sox uniform... period.... is an idiot. 3. If this trade is true and does happen, i will be very sad to see JD go. I love what he has done for this team and how he has conducted himself as part of this organization. He has quickly become one of my favorite players of all-time and I wish him nothing but the best for the rest of his career. Finally, i was curious to see that so many people were suggesting that we sign furcal. is this just pure speculation from a number of people or have there been rumors/smoke regarding the sox interest in him. thanks for any info. i think the furcal talk has basis in a few areas: -we need a lead-off hitter and he is one -we've supposedly pursued him in the past and kw reportedly likes him -his market is drying up so his price is coming down -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 07:58 PM) I'm going to be a little cryptic. But if this was a smokescreen, what other teams are interested in Dye, and why does KW want to make them think they need to up their offer to beat the Reds? Is there a team in the NL that MAY be losing a very good corner OF'er, and would benefit from having a vet both in the field, and in the clubhouse? yes, that is indeed cryptic. but in a good, "let me kill the next three hours at work investigating rock's scenario" kind of way. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 06:08 PM) Has Hal McCoy reacted to all this denial of what his source is telling him? Has he defended his story or his source at all? i don't think he should have to defend anything yet. we've seen many teams offer trade denials before only to see the deal eventually consummated. -
good tyler flowers article from the atlanta journal constitution

dye actually makes a lot of sense for the reds. they need a righty power bat and a positive veteran presence in the locker room. although he's making a decent buck for the next year or two, the reds have some available cash considering they jettisoned griffey and dunn's salaries and now have mostly younger guys. i can see him being a good fit for them.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 07:43 PM) Yes. Juan Itwasonthescore. AA pitcher. Has a great sinker. OK, the score. that makes sense. the first name i heard was jose levinecarpetbombio.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 11:01 PM) its so stupid that they treat middle relievers and closers as two separate positions in that....what do you think? tigers? indians? i think the indians will make a run at him but i can't see them paying him what he'd require.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) I found this pretty interesting. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,2316997.story yeah, that was just kind of thrown out there, wasn't it? usually a beat guy wouldn't make that kind of specific observation if there wasn't some traction to the idea.

QUOTE (Socal Cid @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 09:25 PM) Furcal has been with Adam Katz and Kinzer since day one. Their agency used to be called Reich, Katz and Landis. RKL dissolved over a year ago. I believe Adam Katz and Kinzer now work with Wasserman Media Group (Arn Tellum). and tellem and reinsdorf have a great working relationship.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 11:44 PM) Penn St could easily beat OSU, this game could totally go either way. They both played Wisky on the road. Margin of victory: OSU 3 Penn St 41 And who the hell has Michigan St played??? Javon Ringer is nice and all, but not much there so far. i don't think either penn state or michigan state have beaten anyone of consequence this year. i suppose that you could argue the wisconsin win is quality, but is it really? wisconsin's in free fall now. they got crushed by iowa saturday, who lost to michigan state the week before. at this point of the season, penn state's win at wisconsin is about on par with ohio state's win at michigan state, imo. as far as the scores of osu and penn state's game against wisconsin, i'm not sure that you can really take much out of that as it relates to this weekend's game. is penn state 38 points better than ohio state because they beat wisconsin by that much more? i think penn state can win the game at ohio state, but i don't think they will.
