QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 10:19 PM) To be perfectly honest, I'm excited as HELL to get Peavy and I really want to see him pitch, but I REALLY want him to just spend the rest of this season healing. Let him pitch next year; I don't want to see another player rushed too soon. Better safe than f***ed. given the investment they just made i seriously doubt the organization would rush peavy back.

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) I thought it was a good read. There is a bit of whining there, but who the f*** doesn't shout "why me" once in a while. We just don't read about it in the paper. i liked the piece. i agree that it comes across as whiny in points but i think some of that stems from him just trying to convey, in writing, the pressures he felt. that's hard to pull off. but he stepped up, made himself accountable, and explained the rationale. i don't think it is at all unreasonable to see why some guys went down this path. this gives a more first-person look at that.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 07:10 PM) Wise? Anderson? What's the diff if Quentin, Podsednik, and Dye are playing everyday? Not really a big story here, in my opinion. agreed. i'd much prefer ba because of his defensive play but i don't see either player being overly impactful to the sox chances from here on out.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 12:45 AM) Quentin DNP in Kanny's game today. Might be on his way to the Sox. let's hope his health feels good.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) You know your bullpen is in trouble when you might think about trading for Jim Gobble. i guess the indians have used 26 pitchers this season so far. mlb record is 32.

Who should be the 5th starter after the ASB?
thedoctor replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
my guess is that they give fatolo one more shot and/or acquire a middle to end of the rotation veteran starter. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 07:03 PM) Norris Hopper is a career .316 hitter in the big leagues. And he's younger than Dewayne Wise. Sweet, what a find! (Ignoring the 10/50 line he put up last year) true story here: last year i was watching a reds game with a buddy of mine who's a reds fan. hopper came in the game and i rightly asked: "who the heck is norris hopper." his answer: "this year's dewayne wise."

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) Well it didn't seem effective since the stands were as full as a Royals game. true, but there were probably a number of external factors (the heat being the big one) that influenced it. in general i think the idea behind this is solid from a business standpoint. i think (unfortunately for us) we'll see plenty of variant pricing on games in the future depending on who the opponent is. iirc, some teams (giants?) do this as a regular business practice.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) Good read on the forced Dodgers excitement. Sox marketing trying to establish an arbitrary rivalry that doesn't exist and charge us extra. i don't know if it's trying to establish an arbitrary rivalry as much as its trying to take advantage of the dodgers' national fanbase.

i'd be curious to hear jpn's thoughts on how poreda is throwing vs. how he threw in birmingham.

Cubs fans and Sox fans... not so different?
thedoctor replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
it doesn't surprise me that the fanbases are in reality very similar. many of the supposed differences are rooted in the same north side-south side stereotypes that are only tenuously related to reality. if there's a difference i'd say it's in the size of the fanbases. the cubs undoubtedly have a larger one, imo because of their long affiliation with wgn. much of that fanbase is out-of-state, though. i think if you looked at fans in the metro area it would probably be relatively close. -
QUOTE (spiderman @ Jun 21, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) True., chances are we will continue to struggle there. The White Sox need to go on a run where they win 10 of 12, 11 of 14, something to give Williams a reason to make a move. this is probably the key. it's hard to justify a deal when you are sub-.500 as we've been for most of the year. if you get over .500 and stay there for a week or two, i can see a deal. but every time we've been close to that mark this year we've swooned.

QUOTE (Shamrock4Life @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) you should lose all posting privileges for a year for writing that skyline is "good stuff." its basically what just came out of my ass on noodles with cheese on top. to each, his own.

while i do agree that this team is better than it has played thus far, i have a difficult time pinpointing the tiger series as proof of anything. if we are going to cherry-pick series and point them out, how about losing 2 of 3 at home to the team that's been worst in the division for most of the year. or 3 of 4 at home to the worst team in the west. again, i still think there's hope and i am trying my hardest to be optimistic. but after 60 games i think we have a pretty good indication of what kind of white sox team this is going to be.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) I think this is definitely the biggest test of Ozzie Guillen's career as a manager right now. He's shown that with a good pitching staff and a veteran ballclub, he can win ballgames and he did winning the World Series in 2005. But now the Sox are rebuilding on the fly, and Ozzie has to show that he has enough patience with the young players for them to ride out their slumps at the major league level. Right now, I think many Sox fans are concerned with what he's done based on the likes of BA and Fields. But this team isn't as talented as they have been in the past, and I wonder if KW and Ozzie are both here next season (right now I'd say the chances of that are good), how many veteran ballplayers they will pursue at 2B, 3B and the OF come the off-season when they have some $$$ to spend. i'd agree for the most part. this is a huge challenge for ozzie and it will test him to transition away from a veteran ballclub that understands the big league "way" and a young team that has to learn. his comments the other day about "back in the 80s if you didn't produce you got launched (paraphrasing)" would probably be lost on a young player who wasn't even born in the 80s. i think he can adjust because i believe he's a good manager. of course that does remain to be seen. in terms of ba and fields, i would agree that the ba situation was handled poorly and continues to be. but i don't have sympathy for fields. he was given a great chance this year. they cleared out a veteran, essentially handed him the job, and then stepped back and watched him show the exact flaws we've been talking about since he emerged as a prospect (too many strikeouts, bad defense). it would be nice at if any point and time in the past three years he'd shown the growth you expect out of a guy tabbed as the organization's best prospect.
-
personally i think it's a lengthy stretch to hypothesize that there's some rift between ozzie and kw. both are passionate guys who want to win more than anything. when they aren't winning they're both surly. we've seen this before. as far as ozzie's treatment of young players i think he's proven from day one that he is going to treat players one way. he isn't going to have a lot of variance. now you can argue whether or not he should and there's no question i wish he'd ease up on some of his comments, but you take the good with the bad. if a young player is going to be scarred or ruined by his manager's comments to the media then i'm not certain he was going to be worth much any way.
