four-star rb justin green out of louisville de-commits from ohio state and will sign with illinois. the illini offered him a chance to play running back (osu had him as a db) and that tilted him to champaign. great get for illinois, particularly after some of the disappointing losses lately. ohio state scout site -

QUOTE (scenario @ Feb 2, 2009 -> 02:20 AM) (1) Because he'd see more fast-balls. (2) And people would be unlikely to pitch around him with Q batting 3rd. I like the idea. I think he could have a great year in the #2 position. Regarding him being good with guys in scoring position... It won't be a problem if the guys in front of him (Fields batting 8th, Getz 9th, and whoever at leadoff) do a respectable job of getting on base. i dunno. i just don't see it. i think alexei's more valuable lower in the order where he's got a better chance to drive in a fair amount of runs. jmho.

i don't know why you'd put alexei second when he's one of our better guys with runners in scoring position.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 10:41 PM) Hawthorne is ESL. There is another ESL WR, Appleton, who Illinois has a pretty good shot at too, although his decision won't really be known until he signs Wednesday. What Appleton will actually do depends on who you ask, but I think Illinois is a slight favorite (that's all a verbal means anymore in my opinion, that you are the favorite). appleton is on campus this weekend apparently. -
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 05:54 PM) when do you think he'll be ready to join the team and can he be the long term cf solution? i don't really follow closely enough to be able to put any timetable on his arrival in the majors. but there's probably someone here who could give a more informed projection. here is a link to a story about danks: hardball times. this from his thread over in the aap forum.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 04:49 AM) You know, I'm not pissed we lost and I'm not pissed they played bad, but I am pissed that they quit in the last 5 minutes of the game. That almost never happens with a Weber coached team. yeah, that bothered me. i can understand why it would happen but it shouldn't. the last few minutes were a disgrace. hopefully this game can be used as a good teaching tool over the next week or so. this group has not faced a lot of adversity this year so it will be interested to see how they respond. and where the hell is the mike davis who put 28 on one of the better teams in the country? -

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 05:35 PM) Second base probably. We might see a Ownes/Anderson platoon in CF (BA-lefties, JO-righties) and a Getz/Lillibridge platoon at 2b (Getz-righties, Lillibridge-lefties). Might work. But I would still feel better with one more veteran hitter in this lineup or at least some CF competition not named Wise. we're definitely throwing numbers at a lot of our problem areas this year, that's for sure. -
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 04:26 PM) ive heard a lot of good things about him. how is it that we were able to "steal" him from the draft? in part at least because his agent was scott boras at the time. there were rumors boras was going to demand a huge signing bonus which turned some people off. that and some questions about his productivity at texas caused him to drop to the seventh round. after the draft, he fired boras, which was a plus. since he got drafted he's shown some real promise. there are some questions about his power potential but as a prospect he has just about everything you want. great size, speed, defense, good on-base potential, etc.

illinois just getting taken to the woodshed. great defense by the gophers. every shot is contested. -
there's really nothing else he can say. the economy has jacked up the offseason free-agent market to the point that its probably hard to count on doing anything else. might as well talk up the guys you got and let anything additional be gravy.

QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Jan 26, 2009 -> 09:10 PM) Very heart-warming. And the Dodgers should buy her that apparatus she's asking donations for. hell, she said nice things about jeff kent. they should add her to the p.r. staff.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 25, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) http://articles.latimes.com/2001/aug/19/sports/sp-35951 Speaking of the Dodgers, I came across this really inspiring story that could warm up all but the coldest hearts... great find. that's a helluva story.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 25, 2009 -> 01:48 AM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-0...,2690841.column Phil Rogers takes a couple of shots at Danks for skipping the WBC. In his other column (MLB whispers), he speculates about Ivan Rodriguez coming to the Sox as back-up catcher and part-time DH. normally i enjoy what phil rogers brings to the table. generally, i think he's a good columnist and relatively well-connected. that said, i think he's way off-base here and his attempt to belittle danks is bush league and uncalled for. sounds to me like he's doing the league's work in this column...

Mac gone from Mac, Jurko and Harry

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) I wouldn't be surprised if his salary was a major factor in this. Sponsorship is down all over radio cuz of the economy. If they aren't bringing money in to pay him, they can't keep him under contract at that much money. It sucks because like maggs said, Carmen is a good young on air talent, but Mac has the personality and knowledge of a lot of things outside of sports that made him likable and a ratings winner. well said. great points. -

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) And recently he ripped off the hand that feeds him. Im not surprised at all after reading what he had to say about Mike and Mike garnering the best ratings and all that stuff, he blasted them you know, i was listening when they talked about mike and mike that day and i didn't think what they said was insulting to mike and mike and/or really even negative. i say this as a mike and mike fan. and i did generally agree with their point. chicago's morning radio ratings shouldn't be won by a national show, imho. -

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 12:23 AM) You just opened Pandora's Box with the Illini fans. not really. we're not all that reactionary like kans... er, "other" fans. minnesota is to be commended for their program and they do indeed have a very bright future. i think next year you will have some very, very strong teams in the league. michigan state, minnesota, illinois, ohio state, purdue, michigan, and wisconsin will all return some good players and/or add solid recruits. -

that sucks. danny mac was the best thing going in chicago radio. hopefully he'll re-surface at the score or something once his contract runs out in may. -
QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) Do you really think Garland would take 3 for 21 after making 12million in 2008? well, since the market has constricted he may not have a choice. back to the topic at hand though. do people think a combination of pedro, contreras, marquez, richards, and poreda could get the sox through a season pitching out of the 4 and 5 slots?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 06:45 PM) You apparently haven't watched Pedro recently. not saying either pedro or lyon are great at this point, but there ought to be veteran competition for those spots.
