QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 03:33 AM) he literally ate himself out of the league... we saw him in 2003 back down in Winston Salem, it was actually kind of sad. Little image of his gut here. "little" image? -

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 11:15 PM) That could be another reason the bored has "slown" down, if it even has. Possibly not as many people care about post counts as they did a few years ago. There were some people in the past that posted just to post and brought nothing to the topic, just an "I agree" or something to add another post. i guess i just never got the fascination. i remember when i first started posting message boards and i reached 1,000 for the first time i posted an "i reached 1,000 posts" thread. i got all kinds of congrats and was warm and fuzzy and all that. then later i thought, "what exactly is it that i'm proud of?"

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 07:36 PM) In short, I ask each and every member here at Soxtalk to try and do one thing, show respect to your fellow poster (whether they have 50,000 posts or 1 post). to me there is nothing more d.b.-ish in the world of message boards than criticizing a person over their post count. this is only slight ahead of questioning someone's fan-hood when they are critical of the team. the term "true fan" is wack.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) It's a long story but to summarize it, the former site owner (natas) sold the rights to the board and the domain name to a site that everybody thought was lame in around August of last year. That didn't go over well and the nfl-fans community just didn't get along with the posters there, among other things. So a few weeks later they bought a new domain name with a decent core of the regular posters but there's been a slow trickle of members gradually coming back since then. If you want to check out the site I'll PM you the link. You'd have to re-register though. cool, i would appreciate that. i enjoyed the people on that board. i posted there under this same name, although i was far from a regular poster. i used to frequent the bears team board back in the day when guys like natas, cbus, and mouse used to post regularly there. as time went on i posted less frequently on the team board and more at nfl-fans. then i went through some life stuff where i wasn't posting much anywhere, and when i was able to post more again nfl-fans was gone. i'd always been curious what had happened to it. thanks for filling me in.

QUOTE (chimpy2121 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 05:22 AM) You know who I wish would come back? Goldmember. He's the one that brought me over here from NFL-Fans in the first place. what happened to nfl-fans anyway? last time i went to check it out it redirected me to a different site.

personally i enjoy the site as i always have. i tend to operate under the don't like, don't click philosophy. if i see a bunch of ridiculousness in a thread i generally just move along. there's being critical because it's deserved and critical to be critical. when i see the former, i'll participate. when i see the latter, i find another topic for the most part, although if you catch me in the wrong mood... in general, though, i think sox fans by nature are more skeptical sorts. plus, since 2005 there has no doubt been an influx of fans who aren't as familiar with just how bad and irrelevant this team has been at points in the recent past. not saying they are wrong to expect greatness, but some folks lack the perspective that watching years of bad baseball can provide. i'd say the only thing that does bother me is the fact that some folks still try to portray kw as some buffoon. i've always had the same opinion of kw--he makes some good deals and some bad ones and he isn't the worst or best gm out there. but he's good and the records of the team's he's built would support that. i had to laugh recently after the trade deadline when some were pissing and moaning about how we didn't have the prospects to make a signifcant deal that would fortify us for the stretch run. although i can see where this line of thinking comes from, i think it overlooks the fact that one reason we don't have prospects is many of them were dealt to build the team that has been in first place for most of the year. that is, after all, more important.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) The only term I would attach to the Sox with certainty is streaky. They can be good, really good at times. And other times they can be bad, really bad. But they arent a bad team i'm not sure you can build an objective case that says the sox are a bad team. anyone who calls them bad needs to step back and take a look around the league. perspective can be very helpful sometimes. i think as sox fans we are going to pay closer attention and overanalyze every detail. getting caught up in that can cause you to totally overlook the big picture, one that shows the sox as pretty damn good. i'm not saying the sox are great, or even ready to declare them a playoff team at this point. but they are not bad in any way you'd care to define it.

good to see he signed. from what i've read it sounds like he's a great prospect who fell because of his association with boras. one thing i have read as a concern (and maybe some of those who've either seen him play or are more locked in to prospects) is that he didn't show the type of power at texas some thought he showed in high school. again, this isn't so much my concern as something i've read but i'd be curious to hear some insight on that.
-
QUOTE (MEANS @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 04:52 PM) why would we do this? everyone has been concerned with Floyd and Danks inning totals, and this would increase them. this would be my concern and i definitely would not advocate going with a straight four-man rotation the rest of the way. but i think you can be creative with it when you take off-days into consideration. i don't want floyd and danks throwing extra innings, but if you can work it where buehrle or vaz pick up and extra outing or two and have broadway or someone else in where needed, you can probably make it to october without totally killing your chances.

After Washburn and Byrd, KW is looking at this list

QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 04:18 PM) Yeah, he's been surprisingly good overall. He also put up a 3.72 ERA in July. From here on out, though, it's a question of whether you're going to get the dominant April/May Dotel or the mediocre July version who blew several games. Given his track record, you'll have to excuse me for wondering whether or not the other shoe is going to drop down the stretch. no, i think that's a valid concern. at the same time, he's been pretty strong in august so far so there's no trend in place that would suggest he's on a consistent decline as innings pile up. i think what we will see out of dotel for the rest of the year is what we've seen so far. for the most part he'll be good and even dominant at times, but he'll also have days when he gives up home runs and can't find the plate. -

QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 04:05 PM) That fine with me but, given his post-surgery track-record of mediocre performance, expectations need to be tempered. expectations? there's 43 games left in the season. i think we pretty much know what we are getting from dotel at this point. which, btw, has been pretty damn good. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 02:51 AM) Great point. A lot of us think we know it all. I wonder if all MLB message boards have so many people who know it all. I mean Broadway may suck tomorrow but Richard sucked as well. I see no reason to make Carrasco a starter. Might as well trot out another candidate. We gave Richard 3 shots and he sucked. Hope our bats are alive tomorrow. They should be against another royals righy but youneverknow. i'd say that most message board have a tendency to trot out the know-it-alls. i don't think this board is any different than any other in that regard. probably most teams that have passionate fanbases will have board's that are as reactive as this one (or even more). check out sons of sam horn some time. those guys are brutal on the bosox. it's actually comical to follow their gamethreads sometimes.

i like it. put one spot in jeopardy instead of two.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) I look at this year a little differently. If someone told you March 30th that as of 8/13: Both Buerhle and Vazquez would be below .500 Bobby Jenks would have 22 strikeouts Scott Linebrink would miss over 1 month of the season There would be more than a couple posts that Octavio Dotel shouldn't be used in close games Nick Swisher would commonly be refered to as "dirty .230" Paul Konerko could only wish he was hitting .230 Joe Crede's back would go out again and Juan Uribe would be the 3rd baseman Jim Thome didn't hit the first 2 1/2 months Wasserman,Russell,Carrasco,Broadway would all be recalled from Charlotte. Contreras would be hurt. Win 7 games and be lost for the season. Horacio Ramirez would be acquired because Boone Logan was horrible. Cabrera would have several issues with teammates and management. I don't think anyone would say first place was even a remote possibility. Everyone mentions the Sox faults, and obviously there are many. A lot of people are afraid of the Twins, and maybe rightfully so, but everytime they grab first place, the Sox take it right back. This team is different. They haven't got all the breaks. it really is remarkable that the sox are where they are. but it's just another example of why minoso's three word description of the game is ultimately brilliant: you never know.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) Looks like you just troll through the threads to find predictions that end up being wrong, just to get your jollies. Congratulations, I'm glad you value your time. What a joke. Javy's sucked this year. The fact that you're not disputing that fact, and instead are just fishing for the "I proved you wrong" arguement, just proves you're a troll. I have the right as does anyone to make predictions, right or wrong. Do us all a favor here and add something else to the conversations besides "LOL U WERE WRONG". Child. feel free to cite other examples where i troll through threads looking to prove folks wrong. the simple fact is you tried to be a smarmy ass and you were wrong. a man could take it in good humor and say you got me on this one. you know, maybe you'd laugh and be happy since javy pitched well and the sox won. instead you get reactive over my clearly insensitive and pointed use of the word, "whoops." although thanks for educating me on the painful and damaging affect the word "whoops" can have on someone. i never realized it could have great impact on someone's mental well-being. for that, i apologize. sincerely.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 05:09 PM) there's a reason his ERA is still 4.5 after throwing what... 8 innings of shutout ball? it's because... wait for it he hasn't been very good this year whoops? not quite. LOL. we knew he wouldn't give us a chance, huh? 8 IP, one walk, 10 strikeouts, 0 runs. it sounds like he gave us a great chance, i.e., you were wrong. whoops, indeed.
-
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 12:28 AM) not good. hopefully it's just one game, but honestly we already knew Javy wouldn't give us a good chance to win anyways whoops.
