Hawk can't stand to watch Sox.
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They're bosom buddies. Hawk won't say anything bad about JR. JR made Hawk the GM for a year when Hawk probably knew nothing and still knows nothing about the minors, drafting, scouting, analytics, biometrics or Intl FA. -
Youre funny. Getz apologists ? Im criticizing you and others just assuming the O's would've rather had Fedde just because he was available at the same time as Rogers. The O's got who they wanted at the time. Other GMs make bad trades too. That's it. Try using some common sense. Bad GM making bad trades does not equal Bad GM could've made imaginary trade that you made up in your head using your great gift of hindsight.
-
Yes Balta I know all that. But you didn't address the issue. Is there any proof that the Orioles actually wanted Fedde over Rogers. Rogers had 1 more year of control than Fedde. The Orioles were also looking for a LH starter. His last 9 starts he had a 3.17 ERA. Try becoming familiar with facts of the trade before jumping to any conclusions. You know it is possible other GMs make bad trades. That appears to be the case in this instance. The O's wanted a LH SP and an extra year of control. Until you or anyone else says they have proof the O's made a good offer for Fedde you should probably stop assuming things .
-
Shh, you're not supposed to try to correct wrong negative statements. Everything you say must be prefaced with I'm not sticking up for ( insert Sox player, coach or FO person or owner) however... Somehow now the implication is the Orioles would've traded Norby for Fedde and it's Getz fault that didn't happen ?
-
That quote by Ricky Dish was probably in the off season. It was not a part of the press release So it was likely from any time after Getz was hired and before Spring training. Guy shouldve dated the quote . It's obvious JR back then was talking about the remaing hitting core of the often injured trio of Robert, Moncada and Jimenez who all played true to their injury filled careers. Just more BS from JR to contrast against today's BS statement.
-
Truth. He had started to turn it around after he started trusting his coaches. This is not unique to him. But the Sox could have said let's keep him and see how he pitches the rest of the year instead of treating him as a throw-in in the trade. With so few Sox pitchers with pure good stuff he's the kind of guy who can turn it around in a heartbeat once he trusts the process. He fought it. He wanted to keep starting instead of just finding a spot he could be good at if he had more of an open mind.

Different times. Yes KW worked a miracle one year where somehow some way everything magically worked. How long was he on the job before that happened ? He sure couldn't sustain it. We haven't a clue when JR will actually give Getz or your new fantasy GM any funds to work with and even if he does what exactly to you expect ? Do you expect multiple top 100 prospects for remaing assets like Crochet or Robert ? Prying any good players out of GMs currently hoarding anything that isn't a C, 1st Baseman or pitching prospects at the upper levels is nearly impossible for a dead in the water franchise that can't get top picks because of the anti tanking rules and that JR is preparing to sell whenever he does finally pass away. It's harder than it ever has been to rebuild when you take all that's happening into consideration. But again good luck hoping for a miracle.
-
I don't know that . Has he hired an experienced GM in the last 25 years ? Has he ever ? I don't know if Roland Hemond or Larry Himes had previous GM experience when they were hired . Hawk didn't . Himes didnt last long because he got sick of JR sticking his nose in. If you want to believe Getz is killing the rebuild it's cool. The rebuild is a lie at this point of JRs life. JR killed the franchise. Keep hope alive hoping for a miracle if that comforts you. I know how condescending that sounds . Has there ever been a time in the history of Reinsdorfs ownership that scouting and development was a strength. He won't spent on it. Expecting an understaffed and inexperienced and unqualified Getz to get it right isn't likely. It's not necessarily true that no experienced GMs would work for JR. I'm sure there are ex GMs out there who were unsuccessful GMs because they worked for owners similar to JR who might take the job but are you really expecting JR at this point in his life to actually give a f*** about it. He hired who he wanted in charge. If he fires Getz it's only a scapegoat move to appease fans. I'm hoping it does happen so we can all see what great things happen after that. That was sarcasm.
-
Neither do I . But Jerry does and that's what any GM he hires is working with. You're all hoping for miracles to happen .Some GM to come in and make great moves in a system designed for on field failure but long term profitability. It's kind of amazing that the majority here cannot see the point of my posts. You're all fans of the wrong team like I am . The best you can hope for is JR dies soon and frankly it's not something I personally like rooting for. It'll happen eventually . If people want to think there's some miracle GM out there that can change JRs mind or make more impactful trades and get the Sox back to .500 in 4 years instead of 5 ,great, more power to your hopes and dreams of a couple of years of competitiveness. Maybe by then the Sox get sold to an owner who cares about winning .
-
I don't disagree with any of this . Signing Pham was because the Sox needed offense and to flip him .Obviously you have to make some token efforts to show you want to try to get better even though we all know signing a guy for $3M that no one else wanted was likely to fail. There really nothing to understand about my post except that JR is the main culprit. People can cry about Getz all they want but the next GM is working in the same system. The same system and way of running things that can't sustain success on any level except to bamboozle you into actually thinking a new GM could've gotten better results this year and next year and maybe the year after untill you're close to .500 and second or 3rd place again. Yay JR got the fans back in the ballpark with his Barnum and Bailey "there's a sucker born every minute" strategy. This isn't a sports franchise to be enjoyed by fans this is buying and selling real estate and empire building to pass onto your progeny. It's JRs Circus.

I never made any statement about the money helping the team improve. I'm just pointing out when you talk about how bad Getz is you need to understand things are are not as cut and dried as "he sucks so fire him". No experienced GM would work for JR. Hahn ,Williams and now Getz had never been GMs before. Each had areas that were strengths but they all just worked around JRs interference. We know Hahn sucked at signing the Free Agents who could just come in here and start producing right away especially hitters. He got to spend more money than Getz so far. But really it didn't make much of a difference. Whether you're spending in the dumpster dive range or the kiddie pool range the more you spend only slightly increases your chances of success .$1-$10M is nothing to spend and is where you will have mostly failures. But the successes you have that will have the most value, like Rodon , is in the under $5M range . They are usually short term. Trades and other ways to pick up low cost youth like the draft are the most likely ways to add long lasting impact talent. JR has never liked to spend on youth, scouting or it's development. But this is an area that he likes to stick his nose in the most be it the regular draft or international. He won't pay for the manpower , modern equipment and these decisions have the longest lasting major negative impact on player development. You start with worse players which makes developing them harder, while your coaches and staff and analytics are all inferior which makes development harder. While you might run into some good players and personell along the way they are fewer and farther between than teams who put resources into the vital areas needed to identify and develop youth that consistently works over a long period of time. JR hasn't done it in 40+ years and he isn't going to do it now . Any success any GM has with the Sox cannot be sustained. Hahn was blowing smoke up our asses always talking about sustained success. JR loves spending money in this area. He loves putting pie in the sky dreams out there hyping his inferior product to make it look better than it really is. Typical real estate fraud stuff. Put flowers and plants around and a new coat of paint while the foundation is crumbling or the roof is about to fall in.

Basically the Sox got Vargas and the 2 minor leaguers and the money they saved on Fedde's , Pham's and Kopech's contracts . They got rid of $10M from Fedde's $15M . Kopech's salary was $3M maybe they paid him a little more than $1M and saved $2M this year perhaps and what he might have got in 2025 He'll likely make more with the Dodgers than he would have with the Sox since he's been great with them. Sox signed Pham for $3M but his base salary was a litte less than $468K. Not sure how much Cards took on. We all know the trade sucked but with the Sox you have to consider what they invested in the players and how much they saved by trading them. With JR that's equally or more important than the players acquired. When you do the owner's bidding you do the best you can under the circumstances and keep your job. 3 players and somewhere around $15M saved.

I think there are varying levels of success someone with more experience could have had. But given the budget Getz was given ,apply that to anyone else ,add in the usual injuries / non performance of the usual suspects this team was still hurtling towards the all time bad record. It was apparent as early as December and January when I started making multiple posts on it. I think perhaps a more experienced GM makes a bigger difference in trades . However despite that I look at how all the teams followed Baltimore's lead and no one gave up top prospects. So it wasn't really a seller's market. Maybe it would have opened up if just one top prospect was traded to get a difference maker. It's a copycat group think when it came to trading top prospects but once one gets traded and other teams think you have the upper hand to a Championship the competitive juices of one-upmanship starts to flow among the GMs. Unfortunately that never happened. They were all content working on depth. No one got a difference maker high talented multiple years left on a contract type. I'm not even sure their were many traded who could make an impact in a long playoff run acquired. I also think other GMs treat the Sox differently partly because of Getz inexperience but mainly because it's painfully obvious JR needs capital for his other projects. The less he spends on the Sox the faster he'll get the whole area around the UC turned into the the Bulls /Blackhawks utopia him and The Wirtz's have teamed up on and get his new network going to showcase it all. Yes the Sox are a part of the new network too but they will be sold off ASAP after JR dies. The Sox aren't exactly his priority and everyone knows it . It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Benintendi's contract added to a Robert trade and BAM the Sox 2 biggest contracts now off the books. Maybe then you can offer Crochet an extension and really concentrate on pitching as the road back to respectability. Or you just trade him too. Since he's cheap I can actually see Getz going into next season with him still on the team . Getz will be low balled again and Crochet may have to prove it much like many wanted Cease to do. But Cease was coming off an unspectacular year and they couldn't take the chance he'd flop especially pitching for a miserable bunch of bums. Crochet has already shown he can pitch well surrounded by a terrible team. He may have to do it again next year at least up until they get a couple legitimate offers for him.

Great point ? The team was a cast of rejects. WTF did you expert Bannister to do ? I highly doubt his focus was on the 2024 team. He's mostly making sure the Minor League pitching is being taken care of. The not being able to see past the 2024 team is weird. Pitching is the only thing now that can get the Sox inching slowly back to .500 and beyond.Obviously there's a lot more work to be done.

I know better than to continue this conversation but you do know he doesn't make decisions on his own. He takes info and makes a decision based on whose opinion he trusts the most. You're also not fully aware of every offer he's had. But telling the fan base they are ignorant and trying to rationalize what's going on means nothing and doesn't go over well. Ok so you know someone recommended Fletcher over Jake McCarthy. He listened allegedly to a guy he hired. Vargas 1.000 OPS guy in the minors you'd think he could get a .700 OPS automatically. It's not like pitchers don't make mistakes in the big leagues. So we've establshed he doesn't know talent, great! Now what ? What makes you think even if Reinsdorf fired him things would be any different with the next inexperienced guy he can control ? You do know Reinsdorf is trying to build a sports empire for his kids in Chicago and it may not include the White Sox. You can hire and fire GMs , managers , scouts , fire em all ,replace them all, but nothing changes until the Sox are sold. -

I think when the 26 is so talentless and the ability to spend is so low this is kind of season il you get. Go ahead fire Getz the other GMs wont treat his successor any better in trades . They know JR only cares about the money. You're talking about firing him on principle because of a bad record and miniscule bad moves . When you're working with under $5M for anyone you sign you're not going to be making significant moves. The reality is it would be a cosmetic move designed to make you think someone more qualified might provide slightly more hope. At least you still think it might make a difference. I don't. One puppet replaced by another. -

After the big 4 of Benintendi, Robert, Jimenez and Moncada the highest paid White Sox position players this year is Leury Garcia's $5.5M. After that it's whatever Maldonado and Lopez got paid. Maybe Vaughn and Pham after that. On the pitching side Fedde made around $5M of his $15M 2 year contract. If JR attaches Benitendi's contract to Roberts in a trade the payroll may be the lowest in baseball next year. -

Jerry too busy with his new network and helping turn the United Center area into what he wants the 78 to be which is a sports complex with affordable (ha) housing and sports entertainment mega site. That's why he's been buying up all the parking lots around the UC and partnering with the Wirtz's. -
