  1. Thanks Yaz for sharing that article. I am a big baby at heart and was quite touched by Cowley's writing. Articles of this nature that show human compassion are way too few and far between. Now back to the backstabbing ,venom filled, know-it-alls.
  2. Eh, I just watch the games , listen to Hawk and DJ and like many here have said, its like watching with an old friend. Hell we're all so busy ripping each other new ones on this board whats the difference between that and the Hawk/Jay feud besides thats its more public ? People disagree , thats our nature, everyone thinks they're right. No ones willing to listen , and when they do listen , they're not really listening , just waiting for their turn to talk.
  3. I was pretty shocked to see Jenks for a 3rd inning but I didn't question the move. Ozzie knew as soon as he brought in Adkins the game would be over . He kept Jenks on the hill in the hopes the meager Sox offense could scratch out a run . Didn't pan out. I was extremey pleased with Jenks. He got out of a nice little jam one inning with a man on 3rd and 1 out.
  4. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 09:38 PM) None of our hitters are those guys. Striking out a lot doesnt matter up until you have men on and less than 2 outs and you need contact. If the guy is a complete free swinger than you are focked. If he Ks a lot with no men on because he is trying to throttle a pitch its not a big deal. Its all about situations. I know its all about situations which is exactly why i mentioned pop outs ,shallow fly balls,DP's etc. Theres are a lot of ways to screw up a men in scoring position situation other then a K.
  5. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 09:16 PM) Anderson .296BA with a .362OBP The only knock is he strikes out a lot. Well he strikes out like the rest of our hitters. None of our guys are real good contact guys, so whats one more. I never understand why striking out a lot is such a bad thing. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackon and many, many others struck out a lot. It's much better then hitting into a DP. Yea I know its not a "productive" out but neither are pop outs , shallow fly balls and weak ground balls to the wrong side of the infield with runners on and no one keeps track of those.
  6. I totally agree with the new blood approach. I don't hate any Sox player but am tired of seeing Timo and Willie. The Braves weren't afraid to put Francouer in their lineup and look what he's done. We already know Timo and Willies capabilities. It's time to get a new blood transfusion and see what Anderson can do. Doubt he can do much worse then what we already have.
  7. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 10:21 AM) That sounds all good Jim, but you're kidding yourself. Adkins hasn't been saving anyone by getting warmed up. Our biggest lead of august was yesterday, with a 4 run margin, similarly, we faced our largest deficit of 4 runs. Adkins wasn't getting warm either time. 4 runs is too close of a game to bring him in. He's f'n useless. He is giving Ozzie a license to use Cotts for one batter though. Cuz hey, if you've got an extra arm in the pen, you ain't gotta worry about running outta pitchas. I argued long ago for Adkins being used exactly as Jim said but after seeing Timo bat 5th and Adkins lack of use I'm more inclined now to agree with Gene. I don't think Cotts gets in there enough lately. It seems as though Ozzie is experimenting with Jenks when Cotts should be given a chance in the same role they are trying to fit Jenks into.
  8. Ok I guess this info was posted somewhere in the trade winds section , but I think a few people might skip that section. Delete this thread if you think it's repetitive.
  9. I was convinced early in the year when I posted a thread asking Soxtalk to come up with a nickname for this years Sox before the media did. Sadly it got very few responses. Maybe people thought I was jumping the gun a bit or no one wanted to use any brainpower. And before anyone else says it, maybe it was just a crappy thread.
  10. YES showed the defensive change and said it was Blum when he mad the grab.
  11. QUOTE(Ozzie Montana @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 07:43 AM) Phenomanol. Is that a new drug???
  12. According to the August 10-16 USA Sports Weekly, Ken Griffey Jr. was traded to the White Sox before the trade deadline. Going to the Reds was OF Chris Young, Casey Rogowski and other prospects. The Reds were to have picked up at least $15 million of the remaining $41.8 remaining on Griffey's contract. Jerry Reinsdorf and Red's President John Allen approved the deal until Red's owner Carl Lindner nixed it. Griffey and his agent had given the Red's a list of 3 teams he could be traded to which included the Yankees, Braves and Astros, which could be why the Red's owner didn't approve of the trade. Sorry if this has been posted anywhere before.
  13. I was watching the game on YES and I saw that hole in the screen where he landed. I automatically started saying he jumped because it was so far down from the railing. If he had fell he just would've rolled down the screen.
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) I wonder if that stat will keep holding true if you count only times that the Cell was sold out, like it would be in the playoffs. Nothing like 38,000 people standing and yelling during Thunderstruck to wake you up. (We make the series, and I'm figuring out a way to fly 2000 miles to be one of them!) I'm with you, my friend.
  15. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 10:43 PM) Cali, truth be told, I'm making a bigger deal out of this than it should be. I don't like calling up another pitcher, period. I'd rather they make the Blum move, send Willie to Charlotte, and keep Gload up here. I don't see why this team needs another reliever. Pitch Vizcaino in every mop-up situation till his arm falls off, get some use out of that $1.3 million they paid him in the off-season.
  16. So what exactly do you want me to go by ? His minor league stats? I'm looking at it from Guillen's perspective and so far his vision of what the Sox should be has led to the best record in baseball. I have nothing against Munoz and don't exactly think Adkins is a long term answer . Chances are neither one will be on the playoff roster. Munoz will get his chance in Sept. and next spring. If he's any good it will play out that way eventually.
  17. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 08:15 PM) He did Ok last year. 4.65 ERA or so. When he finally was given innings that meant something down the stretch, when Politte was hurt, he was garbage. And, major league experience -- that did Kevin Walker real well, huh? He's not very good at all. I guess his ERA will come down from 5.80 or whatever, and he'll suddenly start fooling hitters. Arnie Munoz pitched 14.1 innings last yr., He gave up 16 ER , 20 hits, walked 12 gave up 4 HR's and his ERA was 10.05. Adkins earned Ozzie's trust last year Munoz didn't. It's really that simple. But how many long relievers are really that good anyway ? If Ozzie prefers a guy he knows and trusts then I can deal with it.
  18. This picture from a 1974 game program promoting family nights of my Dad and 2 of my brothers.
  19. With all the Johnson's out there I think you're list could have been endless. Personally like Davey Jones of the Monkees.
  20. Don't forget Blum is a switch-hitter too.
  21. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:21 PM) Ok, fine. Arnie Munoz can eat innings. And he has a reason to be called up. He's actually, uhh, succeeding at AAA. As opposed to a 5.8 -- or whatever -- ERA that Adkins has. Decisions are not just made on minor league numbers. Adkins has more experience in the majors and Ozzie was very impressed with the job Adkins did last year IIRC.
  22. Adkins is up because he fills a specific role which is innings eater in blowout or injury situations in order to let guys like Viz,Cotts, Politte, and Marte pitch an inning then get out. Everyone better start realizing this is how a smart team prepares for the post season. When pitching is your strength , you better keep your arms fresh. The Sox will only go as far as their pitching takes them.
  23. Great job by AJ. So glad the O's didnt bring in BJ Ryan to face him. Spiderman is so much better than Dead.
  24. If Frank retires I would be shocked. He knows he can still hit. That lower leg area was like a toothpick. If he can build muscle to better support the bone structure while rehabbing I definitely see him giving it another shot.
