Rockies put Taveras + Fuentes on waivers
BlackBetsy replied to WinningUgly85's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 07:42 PM) If we wanted Tavares we could just promote Owens. Fuentes would be nice, but not at the price of Poreda, which is what they want. +3 -
The best way for TCQ to win the MVP is for the Sox to win the Division. We shouldn't worry about everything else. If they do that, the MVP award will take care of itself. The best way for Alexei to win the ROY is to have a phenomenal September and push the Sox to win the AL Central. If he does that, the ROY award will take care of itself. The MVP award to Quentin will not give me any solace if the Sox finish out of the playoffs.

Why is Milton Bradley among the BA leaders and ARam is not?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 03:16 PM) A player must have 3.1 plate appearences per team game played. (AB+BB+HBP) Ramirez is not hitting that mark. 131 games x 3.1 appearances = 406.1 appearances needed Alexei has 366 AB + 10 BB + 3 SF + 4 SH + 1 HBP = 384 plate appearances. He's 22 plate appearances short. Alexei will need 119 plate appearances over the last 31 games to reach the 503 level necessary to qualify. That's a bit less than 4 appearances per game. He should become "eligible' around game 154-155 assuming he plays all 31. Would be interesting if he went on a September tear and hit like .380 and became eligible for the batting title with like 5 games to go and won it. -

8/25 Gm. 1 - SOX vs./@ BAL, 5:05 CT, CSN

QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 07:04 PM) Honestly, leaving Ramirez is for a third inning is one of Ozzie's worst non-moves this season. Agreed. I was incensed about it at the game. So upset from not taking the suspended game seriously that it ruined the win for me. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 11:13 AM) I wouldn't say it's that many. Maybe 15%. What section will you be in? I'll be somewhere around 1st base. LF, 1st row. Second section from the foul pole. -

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 12:14 AM) How awkward will a walk-off be, where no one in the stands celebrates with the "home" team? I'll be there cheering the Sox. There usually are a ton of Sox fans in Baltimore. I'd say the last trip to Baltimore, the crowd was maybe 1/4 Sox fans. -

Baltimore Sun article on how the O's are going to have to play it: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/basebal...0,3690801.story Basically, they will have no player bench. They have four or five pitchers left. Here's the boxscore of the game. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CH...200804280.shtml Millar / Huff replacement/ Luke Scott up for the Orioles in the top of the 12th, Quentin / Crede's replacement (Getz likely) / Brian Anderson up for the Sox in the bottom of the 12th. Sox still have Griffey, Dye, Getz, Wise to use, plus Carrasco, Thornton, Dotel, Russell, Ramirez out of the pen. -
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 24, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) Jon Link has 34 saves, which leads all of MiLB, and only 6 blown saves. Lights out All Star Barons Pitcher Of The Year. Ummm...an 83-85% save percentage is not exactly lights out. It's kind of average to below average.

Looks like Kenny knew what he was doing once again.....

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 09:39 PM) The Mariners suck because they can't pitch... not because they can't hit. They have a good offense. Since the all-star break they're batting .302 as a team... 2nd best in MLB. (Kansas City is 25th. Their offense does suck.) On the other hand, since the AS game, the Mariners have the second worst ERA in MLB (5.96). Yay facts. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 09:11 PM) If Kenny had better bullets I'm pretty sure he still would've made a move. This has mostly just been luck I think, it wasn't his Plan A. Other than the fact that Richard's second and third starts were basically forfeits? -
QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 07:24 PM) Crede is back for Charlotte, where he will undoubtedly work on popping up weakly to the right side. Broadway starts but Valido is starting at SS... http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...indaaa_chraaa_1 Crede got two at bats, struck out once and was replaced at 3B....

QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 09:04 PM) I've been watching the Seattle cast all night not realizing that EI had both casts. I think it's new this year that they are carrying both telecasts. Visiting telecast is always the first, home telecast second. -

QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 08:36 PM) I know I've seen the Sox do it. It had to be either Manuel or Bevs. Bevington did it when he went out for a second mound visit in an inning but didn't have any relievers warming up. Robin Ventura had to tell him to do that so he could get a reliever up and ready for the hitter after that. Bevington was a real dumbass and I'm not sure how he ever got hired. He most certainly will never manage in MLB again, except on an interim basis when whoever is stupid enough to hire him as a bench coach is eventually fired. -

All-Time Worst big-name players of the Sox history

QUOTE (Drew @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 12:53 AM) Two words: Cory Snyder. Put up stud numbers in Cleveland, lasted 50 games with us and not even getting to the Mendoza line. It could be argued that he was a flash in the pan after his first three seasons. I remember watching him slide to catch a ball in LF, which he missed, and then got up to look at his hand before locating the ball and getting it back into the infield. Damn, you got there first. But he never put up stud numbers...he hit a lot of homers but hit for s***ty average and never got on base. -
QUOTE (beck72 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 06:00 AM) Richard may be a decent arm for the bullpen. He can throw meatballs, which is typical from the Sox second-half bullpen. Richard also has shown he can throw harder in spurts [think his first start when he overthrew to like 94 mph for the 1st inning or so rather than his typical 90 or so]. If he only needs 2 pitches rather than 3, and face batters only 1 time rather than twice or 3 times, he could be more effective. Fixed your post. (Although I agree that Richard has more potential as a bullpen arm given his decent early-inning performances. Not sure he is a LOOGY, but he could fill the Masset role adequately).

Brandon Allen is the new Chris Carter. Carter 2007 / Age 20 Season / Low-A .291 / .383 / .522 ... 112K 67 BB in 126 games Allen 2008 / Age 22 Season / High-A / AA .278 / .374 / .546 ... 106 K 56 BB in 114 games Almost eerie the lines they've put up. Kannapolis is a tougher hitter's league than Winston-Salem, but it's balanced out by the tougher High-A pitching. Age is a bit of a wash since they were both born in 1986. Allen has slightly more pop but has slightly less contact (I mean, slightly). Carter 2008 has put up similar numbers to Carter 2007, but has done so in a very good hitter's league, while Allen has performed fairly well in a pitcher's league. I was bummed about trading Carter at the time (even though I liked getting Quentin, just would have preferred to give up something else), but you'd have to say that Allen is looking like every bit the prospect Carter was. I guess you trade Carter since his stock is higher and since he is a 15th round pick and you believe his production is a bit more than he will be able to sustain. Of course, when you get a potential MVP for him, the trade is a steal for the Sox.

Yes...we need more high walk guys out of the bullpen. Pass.

Wow...it's buy Griffey out and let him walk by a mile to me. I just don't see the arguments for signing a 39 year old Ken Griffey where his best positions are LF, RF and DH and he's inferior to the players you have there now (Quentin, Dye, and Thome). Much rather have Quentin ($500k), Dye ($9M), and Thome ($8M, considering payment by Philly) than Quentin/Dye/Griffey ($10-12 million). Thome is a year younger and his old player skills are better. Swisher vs. Griffey is kind of a no brainer as well. Swisher is better defensively (although it's not that Swisher is plus defender) and signed long term fairly cheaply. Swisher vs. Konerko is not close as well. Trading Konerko for room for Griffey pushes Griffey to CF in his age 39/40 seasons...I just don't see that. I guess he could try 1st base, but a late career transition like that is not something I would be anxious to see. But I'd take age 33/34 seasons for Konerko - who has bounced back from poor seasons before - over Griffey 39/40 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) The Sox would have to offer Griffey arbitration to get the draft picks though right? We'd be crazy to offer him $12M next season. You are correct. However, ESPN has his salary at $8.5 million this season, which means you could offer him as low as 20% less than that ($6.9 million) in arbitration. I'd probably keep him around at $6.9 million. Plus he would not have 10+5 trade rights if he picked arbitration and could be traded...it's a no brainer that Griffey would reject arbitration. His $4 million buyout makes his salary essentially $12 million this season, but would not count for arbitration purposes, I believe.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) (1) Paulie hasn't hit all year and his playing through a minor injury. His trade value hasn't been this low since 2003. (2) Paulie still has about $30 million left on his deal and it's unlikely that Kenny will eat any of it. (3) Paulie has 5/10 rights and can veto a trade. (4) The coaching staff and front office generally like Paulie. Stranger things have happened, but I seriously doubt that Paulie will be dealt within the next two hours. Your sound reasoning and well thought out logic would get you IP banned at a lot of places. Paulie is going nowhere, as he should go nowhere. Griffey will NOT be on the 2009 Sox unless they keep him on to DH and let Thome go (I'd prefer Thome, he's kept his power better). If you asked me for the BIGGEST benefit to this deal it would be the draft picks we'd get for Griffey when he signs somewhere else as a free agent. The Sox could conceivably get 6 supplemental picks next year - 2 for Cabrera, 2 for Griffey, 2 for Thome (if no option picked up). I'd say that would help the farm system, but I'm not high on the Sox's drafting.

QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Love this deal. Didn't give up anything imporant, plus could me less Konerko which is a great thing Masset was close to DFA anyway, so he's not a loss and Alexei Ramirez, Gordon Beckham and Getz killed Richar anyway, so they are giving up nothing for him in reality. However, I think the team is much worse defensively with Griffey in CF and, believe it or not, at 1B, where I have long believed Paulie is plus defensively (fairly soft hands, good scoops, good decisionmaking). Probably worse defensively than they improve with Griffey over a slumping Konerko in the lineup. I'd have probably passed on this deal. I'd have rather used Masset/Richar to get a Huston Street. This is going to essentially end Paulie's season. Thome hits pretty well against lefties and I'm not sure I would take Thome out for Konerko against many of them. Since Paulie is fairly mental in his game, this could be a real crushing blow. And even if Konerko gets on a hot streak.....ummm, Swish goes to the bench? How happy would Junior be going to the bench. This is a very odd move, even if its essentially free.
